Ohm (12:01 PM)
Hey everybody! Thanks for joining. Shoot me whatever you guys wanna talk about -- Jets, Giants, Knicks, NBA, movies, good food to eat during the Super Bowl, Debbie Gibson vs Tiffany, whatever! LOL.
Ohm my good buddy...I have a two part question. Do you think the Giants still see Will Beatty as their Future LT. Also, what sense does it make to pay Jacobs starter money and give him 9 carries per game? Will Brandon be back next year?
Ohm (12:05 PM)
Andi... what up man? Just my opinion... I think they still hope he is the future LT whereas prior to training camp, they really saw him as the LT of the future. To be fair to Beatty, he suffered a foot injury that set him back. But with an opportunity to really impress in camp, Beatty kind of showed he is still young. He still has room to improve. But they still have high hopes for him. But Andrews' contract and the clauses of him starting at tackle in the future have to make you wonder about what they are thinking about Beatty, that's all. As for Brandon, I do think the Giants will need to settle who is their starting RB. Yes, the contract is big for a guy who will only get 8 carries a game. I think they should give Brandon more carries. I thought he showed flashes of his old self toward the end of the season but he was fresh and that was because they didn't use him much early on. But it will be hard to keep him and Ahmad if they have to pay Bradshaw a good amount of money. Ahmad's contract is up. Let's wait to see what the new CBA says. But it might be hard to bring both back.
Jc (Fort Myers Fl)
Ohm. We all know Reese has a blanket statement for all free agents on the open market but do you think he would consider Plaxico for real. I think it would be a great idea if he is in shape and ready to play cause no one on the open market or the draft has his skill set agree or disagree?
Ohm (12:08 PM)
JC, the key is "if he is in shape." He could be slim and looking strong but you have no idea what his legs are going to be like. He will be in jail shape which is not football shape. The Plax thing will come down to whether Mr. Mara wants him back and will bring him back. He is one of the classiest owners in the league. I know co-owner Steve Tisch has a good relationship with Plax. And with Michael Vick's success, it is possible Plax could be back. I think what will also dictate Plax's potential return is how Steve Smith progresses with his rehab, he is coming off complex knee injury that required microfracture surgery. Bottom line, it's possible he could come back. And even if Plax lost some speed, which he will at his age and inactivity, he still has the size and hands. Someone will sign him for sure.
Jason M. (Parsippany, NJ)
In looking at the pool of free agents this off-season, what position do you think the Giants will look at and specifically who might they seriously consider?
Ohm (12:10 PM)
Jason, I think the Giants will look at a linebacker, cornerback, possibly another safety and maybe another running back. No idea how much money they can spend due to the CBA or what they will do with their own free agents yet. I do think OL is another position of need for depth and youth and that could be addressed via draft.
What GMEN FA's are gone?
Ohm (12:11 PM)
Fanfave... here is the list of Giants with contracts that expired after this past season: http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/giants/post/_/id/3717/list-of-giants-with-expiring-contracts-blackmon-waivedinjured
I know the CBA is going to have an effect on this but any chance of nmandi and/or chad greenway becoming a giant. either one would be a huge addition to the d.
Ohm (12:13 PM)
Joe, hard to say. I know those are the two names every Giants fan mentions. Personally, I'd love to see Nnamdi. I think he would be awesome in Fewell's defense and allow Fewell to do much more but he will command a ton of money. Greenway should command a good contract too. The Giants can use a prolific playmaker at linebacker.
Nets Fan (NJ)
Ohm, we did it! We eclipsed our win total from last year! Who needs 'Melo? What is your opinion on Derrick Favors? Do you think he can be
Ohm (12:14 PM)
Nets fan, I went to a game for the first time this season last Saturday against the Mavs. Saw Favors play a bit. Nice NBA body. Very raw and young. I think he has potential. But you know what, if I am the Nets, I would revisit Melo just before the trading deadline. That is when things heat up and I bet you the Melo sweepstakes get going again. Nets are in dire need of superstar power. Favors could be two years away. They need a star to play alongside Lopez. And they need star power badly. They just need to convince Melo to sign and that is the problem.
Are there any major contact negotiations or issues to look out for the Giants' postseason.
Ohm (12:17 PM)
JJ, several in the offseason. Once CBA is negotiated, and who knows when that is, Giants have to figure out what they want to do with guys like Mathias Kiwanuka, Ahmad Bradshaw, Steve Smith, Kevin Boss. Those are just some of the big names on their list. Jerry Reese says he could offer Kiwi a one-year deal to re-establish his worth. Remember, Kiwi was put on IR in middle of the season with a neck injury and he still needs to be cleared to play. Is scheduled to visit with doctors at the end of this month. Smith also facing a long arduous knee rehab. I expect the Giants to re-sign Smith. As for Kiwi, I expect them to try to bring him back as well.
Curt (New Jersey)
What position do the Giants NEED to address in the upcoming draft?
Ohm (12:18 PM)
Curt, in no particular order, OL (depth and insurance for Seubert and O'Hara coming off injuries), CB (depth), LB, S (depth), RB (depth and insurance for Bradshaw if he doesn't come back), speedy playmaker to help on special teams.
Ohm - forget position (except for maybe DE, WR and QB), the Giants need to find a PLAYMAKER in the draft. They need spectacular to complement solid.
Ohm (12:20 PM)
Anthony... Word to the Mutha. Exactly. Would love to see them draft some speedy guy who can play corner, RB or WR but will be a difference maker in the return game. They need speed to stick with Philly. Couldn't agree with you more.
john (where jay cutler happened)
as it stands right now, knicks would face the chicago bulls in the playoff. how do they matchup with each other?
Ohm (12:22 PM)
John, I like the Bulls a lot. And I am a Thibodeau fan from my days of covering the Knicks back in the late 90s. I know Felton has done a terrific job but he won't be able to cover Rose. Stoudemire should get the better of Booz but Booz will get his numbers. If Noah comes back healthy, he will hurt them with his rebounding. Knicks don't have enough big bodies inside. Deng and Chandler will be a decent matchup and Gallo too but I think the Bulls have too much. In my opinion, Knicks would win a game or two off Bulls.
Logan Mankins over Snee, Abraham over Tuck and Osi for All Pro really. Some people need thier votes taken away, who voted for Darren Sharper this year terrible.
Ohm (12:22 PM)
Sho'nuff... I didn't have a vote, for the record. LOL.
Tom (Dirty Jersey)
What position do the Giants look for in Round 1? I'm hearing a lot about this outside LB from NC, Akeem Ayers, but also a bit about an offensive tackle. What's on Reese's mind?
Ohm (12:24 PM)
Tom, don't know what's on Jerry's mind. He typically doesn't say much other than he is going after best players. But I would have to say he should be thinking about OL and LB and speedy playmaker. I think in the first mock drafts by Kiper and McShay, Kiper had them taking Pouncey's brother, a center/guard. And McShay had them taking a defensive tackle. I will blog about that this week and give you guys the skinny so check out the ESPN New York Giants blog.
Hey Ohm, do you think Travis Beckhum will be a bigger part of the offense next year?
Ohm (12:26 PM)
JR... I thought Beckum would be a bigger part of the offense this year when all the receivers went down and early in the season when all their tight ends were hurt. But they didn't use him all that much. They did line him up as a receiver some but sadly he didn't produce much or was he targeted that much. Now, Boss' contract is up so we'll see what happens with that.
Ohm (12:27 PM)
Oh, and for those that asked about what Giants will need in draft... I forgot, add TE to that too. Because of the CBA uncertainty, Giants may need to protect themselves not knowing what will happen with their ability to sign their own free agents and with Boss' contract up, the Giants will need another tight end if for anything else, to provide depth.
what do you think is going to happen between melo and the knicks? do you see it happening anytime soon?
Ohm (12:28 PM)
JP, I think Knicks will get involved closer to trade deadline. But if I were the Knicks, I don't give up a ton for Melo. Why not wait for him to become a free agent and then come here without giving up some good young talent for him? And even if he is dealt to others, could only be a half season rental and then he signs with Knicks. I think he wants NY bad. Just look at what happened to the Nets' chase for Melo.
I think the Giants have to get faster at the skill positions, RB, WR, and CB. They also need a James Harrison type at LB, just a nasty, no-non-sense dude. I also think its time to cut ties with Beckum, A. Ross, O'Hara, and Boley. I think Rich S can hold the fort at C until the Giants find the long term solution there... Thoughts?
Ohm (12:31 PM)
Jeremy, they must upgrade at speed if they want to keep up with Philadelphia. Remember, if Kiwi stays healthy, he would have had an impact at linebacker as pass rusher and DE. Fewell said he was a major part of what Fewell wanted to do. But they need another LB for sure. I'd love to see them add a speedster at WR or CB, ideally CB. And put him on returns. As for Rich S... he is coming off kneecap surgery. I think he and O'Hara can hold down center position, Koets comes back from torn ACL too, but they could draft an OL.
Ohm, your buggin' if you think Asomugha is going to play for Fewell...he'll take one look at that "off coverage" he forces Cweb to play and he'll run away...screaming.My nightmare situation would be if NA ends up in Philly....If GB gets him you may just have to hand over the Lombardi trophy to them 2 years in a row (yes, GB will beat Pitt)
Ohm (12:32 PM)
I think Fewell could make an adjustment for Asomugha. Also, never discount the idea of playing in NYC for players. Asomugha will be a free agent for the first time. My guess is he'd love to play for the Jets but the Jets won't be able to pay him and Revis... that would be insane if they did and awesome too! But I think the Giants can get better in secondary. C-Web and TT are solid. But they can get better there.
Todd (New Jersey)
Any chance Gilbride doesn't come back next season?
Ohm (12:33 PM)
Todd... I'm pretty sure he will be back. Where is he going? Coughlin said he is not making changes to the staff. Barring an unexpected and unforeseen change of heart, Gilbride is back.
Ohm, Where do you see the Giants going in the Draft? I feel our biggest need is Linebacker but don't want to wait to develope one. Who are the free agent LB's we could get that could step right in this year? Then maybe draft some OL
Ohm (12:34 PM)
Bobby, in no particular order, OL, LB, CB, S, RB, TE, speedster to help on special teams.
Is Kiwi coming back in your opinion? Steve Smith?
Ohm (12:35 PM)
I believe they will try to re-sign both, maybe to one-year deals due to their injuries. If Kiwi is cleared to play again, I think Giants bring him back, and the Giants typically take care of their injured players.
Jason M. (Parsippany, NJ)
It seems as though the second round picks of 2009 (Sintim) and 2010 (Joseph) have not panned out quite like we all would have hoped. How do you think their 2011 season will fare?
Ohm (12:36 PM)
Jason, you might be able to say that about Sintim for sure. Not for Linval though. He had too many veterans ahead of him playing really well in Cofield, Canty and Bernard. I think they are still high on Linval. Now if he is inactive most of this upcoming season, then that is a bit of a downer. Sintim suffered a serious leg injury toward the end of the season but next year will be a big one for him. He'll need to start stepping up.
Jason M. (Parsippany, NJ)
In my opinion, one area of weakness that needs to be seriously addressed is the LB core. Can Sintim really hold his own as a starter? Are they committed to Goff in the middle? Do they keep Boley?
Ohm (12:37 PM)
J, just answered Sintim. As for Goff, they liked what he did this season so I think they are committed to him. Could they bring in competition, sure. As for Boley, I do think they keep him.
Would it benefit the Giants to try and find a Dallas Clark type TE? I think a smaller, faster guy who can get downfield in the seams will greatly help Eli and open things up outside more. I see Boss being more of a run-blocker and I have no idea what Beckum is at this point... THoughts???
Ohm (12:38 PM)
Problem is, Beckum is supposed to be their Dallas Clark type. I do think they need a TE though, to cover themselves for Boss.
Ohm, do you think Shawn Andrews is an opening day starter on the OL next year (if there is a next year)
Ohm (12:39 PM)
JR... if his back holds up... strong possibility he starts. Depending on how they come back from injuries for O'Hara and Seubert and Andrews' back, the starting five could be Andrews, Diehl, O'Hara, Snee and McKenzie.
Assuming that there is football of course, and given the recent comments of the Safeties, should Giants fans be worried about the team quitting on Coughlin at some point next season???? Something with this team has to change otherwise next year won't be any different than this year...
Ohm (12:40 PM)
Jeremy, well, it's always a possibility if the Giants go into a funk and lose games early. They got to stop their whole streaky act. They got to start winning, and feeling good about themselves and be consistent. No three-game losing funks. Those are the ones that threaten harmony and add dysfunction.
Ohm, if the Nets whiff on 'Melo (assuming the Nets do as you say, and revisit him before the trade deadline), is there any other "star power" hitting free agency this offseason? I have a feeling Brooklyn will be a lot more attractive to potential signees than Newark.....
Ohm (12:41 PM)
I think CP3 will be a FA this offseason. So the Nets will have options and you are right, BK will be attractive with new arena and owner willing to spend.
Ohm (12:42 PM)
Alright guys, thanks for the questions today! Check out the Giants blog for more stuff this week and tweet me @NotoriousOHM on twitter.
