ESPNChicago (2:04 PM)
Hi everybody. Jesse just got off the air on ESPN 1000 and will be in the chat room shortly. Keep the questions coming ...
Jesse Rogers (2:09 PM)
Hi all. Sorry a minute or two late. Just got off the radio where Q joined us...Kane will try tonight despite being sick..carcillo and kruger are out..fire away with questions!
Mark B (Chicago)
Since the players had a 4 day break for the holidays, do they stay in Chicago or fly home? What about the international players (Stalberg/Hjalmerson/Krueger)? Do they have family fly in?
Jesse Rogers (2:11 PM)
Both...some stayed...some went other places..I know some of the swedes went to NY for some R and R..I dont think anyone went overseas..I know Hossa's family came to chicago
Mike (Great White North)
Back home from Holiday visit in Chi-Town...You have preached patience with our goaltenders, notably Craw...I know two games is a small sample, but his play over the last two games leads me to believe I might have jumped the gun on the trade for a new goalie talk. You are right so far....Keep up the good work..
Jesse Rogers (2:12 PM)
Well, thanks but I'll still say we dont know for sure who the playoff goalie is going to be...I assume it will be craw but at least emery has played his way into the conversation IF craw falters later in the year..one of those good problems to have
Mike (Brookfield, WI)
It looks like Brunette is killing the momentum & speed of Toews and Kane. Any talk of someone else filling that role on their line? Your thoughts?
Jesse Rogers (2:14 PM)
Lets put it this way, if it isnt working, he'll be given a shorter leash than start of the year..Brunette has shown some good hands and instincts lately and they like Stalberg on that 3rd line...If the offense struggles im sure they would switch spots...just like the start of the year, they can "afford" brunette there right now but I dont love it either
Ryan Sheahan (Sitka, Alaska)
As much as I dislike Kevin Bieska, I really think adding a defenseman with his type of attitude would be a plus for the Hawks, any chance they could add someone like him...James Wisniewski?
Jesse Rogers (2:15 PM)
Sure theres a chance but no way on wiz..way too expensive..but I dont disagree a nasty guy wouldnt be bad...they will add a 5 or 6 for sure just not sure who right now but yes, they could use that type of guy for sure
Hey when do you see the band wagon fans jumping on the Hawk's ship? I think around all star time in feb.
Jesse Rogers (2:17 PM)
Very soon..after football for sure...Its coming and then will take off as playoffs start...Our numbers indicate it really jumps (obviously) in interest when playoffs roll around
Do you think that the goalie situation will be solved? will one goalie emerge, somewhere during the season, as the definite starter? or will the hawks just flip flop their way to another Stanley Cup?
Jesse Rogers (2:19 PM)
Wont flip flop..at least not as they head into the playoffs..thats a recipe for disaster...its craw..but if feb or march roll around and he struggles for a long streatch then he'll go to emery...by april 1 he'll settle on a guy..at least thats been Q's history here and elsewhere
Imre (Missoula, MT)
Would Ruuto from Carolina be a good fit for 2nd line center? Think he'd be the missing piece to the top 6 for this and next year? He makes about 4M next year, so would do you think that would work cap-wise? What about Frolik (2M salary) and a pick/prospect for him?
Jesse Rogers (2:20 PM)
He can be had for sure. He'll be gone by the deadline but hes not the best fit for them...Not saying they wouldnt take him but to me, on a championship type team, he might be a gritty 3rd line guy...not the best playmaker type..prob wouldnt take too much to get him..a prospect and pick..something like that...froli def enough to get him I think
Stu (Cary, Il)
Who do you like in the long run, Crawford or Emery?
Jesse Rogers (2:22 PM)
Crawford from what I see and can tell but I dont have a crystal ball...I think there is a concern about holding up for emery but just his youth and his technical ability is why I give craw the edge but certainly the fact that we can debate that right now shows emery has been pretty good...still craw till further notice for sure
I was watching det vs stl, wher det came back vs stl. Are teh blackhawks good enough to compete against the red wings
Jesse Rogers (2:24 PM)
I watched some of that..sure they are...both teams built in similiar style..puck posession, etc. I think the hawks migth be emerging as a deeper team..You have to cut down on what det did last night..giving them multple goals in a short period of time..they are great at grabbing the momentum and holding it ..(look to winter classic vs hawks) so have to break it quicker...
What's up with Frolik? Was really excited about him becoming more adjusted/comfortable this year.
Jesse Rogers (2:26 PM)
I was never high on him...some predicted 30 goals, etc...I dont like when the only evidence about a guy is in the playoffs...to me, doesnt translate to next season...especially for a veteran..one thing if light goes on for a young guy..and frolik is still young but he's been around for a few years now..he did very little leading to van series and had about 3 good games and everyone went nuts...I dont see the desire for 82 like I do for others...dont always see it in bolland either...but as long as they come to play in the spring (bolland will for sure) that's all that matters cause they have enough to get there
What's going on with Lepisto? Do we know why he is getting benched so often? Do we know what Quenneville's issue is with him?
Jesse Rogers (2:28 PM)
I think its judgement and decision making...little things if you watch closely...I think it can be a flip of he coin with that 6th d-man but o'donnell and scott know their role mostly cause they know they dont skate well...I dont have a prob with lepisto here and there but I think that's your answer
BobbyJet (Ontario, Canada)
I personally feel that Kruger is not ready to play in the NHL and could use a good stint in Rockford to help his development, especially on the offensive side and physical side of the NHL. What are your views? Are Hawks rushing him?
Jesse Rogers (2:30 PM)
I think he's over his skies on the 2nd line but he's been fine overall...def sound..smart, off a little slow but he's shown flashes...you see him get burned PK often? dont think so..he needs to bulk up and he got hit in head so hard to balme him..but I dont think hes rushed if he's on the 4th line...and I still dont think he'll be their 2nd line center come playoffs but he's fine to be on the team
Seeing as the Hawks have a few players in the top 20 in scoring, does that speak more to the depth of top talent or unselfish play of those stars?
Jesse Rogers (2:30 PM)
It just speaks to the talent (and health) of those 4. Simple as that
Jesse, with Stalberg really starting to show something, I was wondering what your gut feeling is on him getting some time with the second power play unit. Seems like his speed might benefit us power play wise.
Jesse Rogers (2:32 PM)
I agree..written about that a couple times lately..think you'll see it startign tonight with kruger out, etc. So yeah should be coming..he can create with that extra space..maybe a break away or two..you can get those on pp sometime or mini breaks, etc
Exactly how far under the salary cap are the Hawks this season?
Jesse Rogers (2:32 PM)
Like 6 mil..plenty of space
Jesse, very interesting to read your comments about Frolik because that's exactly how I feel about Dave Bolland... You've said in the past that Bolland can't be dealt because of his playoff caliber...why is Bolland untouchable? 3 plus million for a post-season player is ridiculous.
Jesse Rogers (2:33 PM)
Not on this team its not...You want Toews checking the sedins/ thornton/ etc.? No way..right now he's worth it cause they are good enough to get to the postseason with him just being ok...he's integral once they get there..frees up toews for offense
Bryan (Lake Forest)
Hey Jesse, what was your take on all the hits Kruger took the other night? Coincidence or a case of the opposing team going after an injured player (unsportsmanlike IMO since it was a head injury)?
Jesse Rogers (2:36 PM)
Nothing to do with other team going after him, IMO. I think he shouldnt have played. I think its not a coincdence he got a concussion and then his next ganme he took a bunch of hits he hasnt taken this season..and I dont believe its because he was being targeted...(not sure rick nash even knows who kruger is)..he just wasnt "game ready" mentally, IMO..cant prove and in hindsight but I believe its connected
Do you see Montador being part of the team next season. Doesn't seem he adds enough to the hawks to be considered.
Jesse Rogers (2:36 PM)
Based on his 4 yr 11 mil contract I do think he'll be with the team
Just saw your recent post about hawks adding another D-man, however i feel the available cap space might be better used adding a legit number 2 center... perhaps a player like Mikko Koivo from the struggling Ducks... any thoughts
Jesse Rogers (2:37 PM)
They dont have to use a lot to get a 5 or 6 dman...he shouldnt cost too much and its doubtful a 3-4 will drop in their lap..point is I think they can address both if things break right
Don (Columbus. OH)
Somehow during your Q & A with Coach Q on ESPN 1000, a commerical played so I missed his answer to the idea of a show like 24/7 coming in to do a season with the Hawks?
Jesse Rogers (2:38 PM)
Thats weird...he said he'd love it because it would mean another outdoor game for hawks..which he enjoyed..
Alex (North Chicago)
What team in the West do you see as posing the biggest problem for the Hawks in the playoffs? Also, how awesome would another Flyers/Hawks finals be?
Jesse Rogers (2:39 PM)
Personally, I think the west is down..IF det stays healthy then its them IMO...with a nod to San Jose as the other possibility
Jesse, in your opinion, what makes a guy like Bolland so effective in the playoffs while kind of disappearing in the regular season?
Jesse Rogers (2:41 PM)
Embracing the role...he knows he's going up against the top centers in the league and relishes it...offense comes when he makes them play in thier own zone so its a double whammy if he's douing his job...just think in the reg season, that type of job isnt highlighted as much as postseason so hes kind of just doign his thing...not saying mailing it in of course, cant do that..but just not playing "toews like" for lack of a better word...but I think he fell ito this role, got accolades for it, and now is happy with it
Peter (S. Loop)
Jesse,Nice job on the radio this morning. You wrote a few weeks ago that if Q has one weakness it's the way he handles goalies.I tend to think he's showing it's a strength of his. He's gotten remarkable performance out his goalies the past 2 years at playoff time. Niemi won a cup and Crawford was unbelievable against Vancouver, especially late in the series. Now Joel takes the team to the top of the NHL by pushing all the right buttons with Emery and Crawford this year. I love the way he rides the hot hand and grooms his netminder for the playoffs throughout the season. You still think it's a weakness?
Jesse Rogers (2:45 PM)
Well, its complicated...we can ask why are the No. 1 faltering and look at it the other way..and personally, I think he got very lucky with niemi...very lucky...its followed him in several NHL stops...maybe he doesnt have clear cut No. 1's but it seems like his handling of them comes down to a hope and prayer in a sense...Im not articulating it very well but, hey, guess cant go wrong playgn the hot hand...unless it becomes murky come playoff time...luckily, it wasnt the last 2 yrs and the back-up succeeded...
Mark (Pasadena, CA)
I was impressed with Adam Clendening and Stephen Johns while watching Team USA's first game at the World Juniors. When can we expect to see them with the Blackhawks? Could they be in the mix for next season? Brandon Saad also was impressive, and I assume he has a chance to stick next season beyond the first handful of games.
Jesse Rogers (2:46 PM)
I dont think Clendening or JOhns will be ready next season...Saad is a diff story as we know..just hard to predict but he has best chance
Hubert V. (Montreal)
At this point, would you consider the prospect of a Frolik trade in exchange of a reliable second-line center as a plausible one ?
Jesse Rogers (2:48 PM)
Now, but its not as simple as that...You dont think other teams see hes on the 4th line and struggling..there are scouts at every game. He's a throw in as of this moment if someone will take his contract..hes not the centerpiece of a trade...maybe throw in is too harsh but he's the 2nd part of a deal if it can be had
I like your 'what would you change' bit on ESPN 1000 today. I didn't get to respond, but I would have liked the Hawks to resign Campoli. How much do you think he would have helped (or hurt) the blue line this year?
Jesse Rogers (2:49 PM)
Helped...just ask, is he better than any of their 6th guys? yes..in fact he's better than montador and fits the hawks style well..and they have the money for both...so yes, hes missed
The Dude (Chicago)
Tim Gleason from Carolina would look pretty good in the indianhead, no?
Jesse Rogers (2:50 PM)
Yes, agreed...and I think he would be avail now but who knows asking prices, etc. IM sure carolina is and has been on the hawks radar
It is proven that the hawks can put up points, but are you concerned with the lack of points from our defense? Leddy and Keith are the only to hawks in the top 50 in points.
Jesse Rogers (2:51 PM)
Yes, a little bit...playoff scoring will come down probably so need that from the defense..Leddy and keith are fine but need to keep it going...goals or just points...means they are being active and igniting from the back end etc. but yes, something to keep an eye on
If the Hawks do make a trade, which if any prospects do the Hawks consider untouchable?
Jesse Rogers (2:53 PM)
Tough one...maybe Saad..only cause he already has the body and could mature into a pretty good power forward...dont think morin or smith are..maybe one of the centers...Mcneil..but not many if any when youre on the cusp of a possible 2nd championship in 3 years
Friend of the Feather (Chickasha, OK)
Some nuanced references in the last game by the TV crew about Nash's availability. What are your thoughts on Nash wearing the Indian Head sweater?
Jesse Rogers (2:55 PM)
I heard that..boy, hawks would have to blow them away and would eat up a ton of cap but how could you say no? So many teams would line up so hard to imagine columbus staying in the division with him..send him east..someone would take him with a big package of prospects, etc Alot would have to fall their way for that to happen
Do you get the feeling that the Hawks will use all of the 6 mil they have available? Or will they leave a buffer to go into next season with?
Jesse Rogers (2:56 PM)
No idea...Im sure there is no plan in place...they use whatever it takes to get players that can help...I mean, if you get a rental, wont matter for next season...
Fernando (Chicago Edgewater)
Jess, what is your take on bringing Shane Doan to the Hawks? Would the yotes part with him?
Jesse Rogers (2:57 PM)
I think they would if Doan would agree to trade..players are goofy..Ive heard nash doesnt want to go anywhere..is he nuts? but that just might be the talk now..we've seen things change closer to deadline..these teams (like PHX) that just cant get completely over the hump should think about it to stack the cupboard and go from there
Big Drake (California)
Jesse, do you see Stan going after a Bryan Allen, Matt Carkner, or Shane O'Brien type player or a Tuomo Ruutu / Brendan Morrow type?
Jesse Rogers (2:58 PM)
Former more than latter...but its not black and white..depends on offer, who they give up, etc. but based on your question, thats my answer
Joel (Dubuque, IA)
If the Blackhawks make a trade and it involves someone on the active roster, who do you see it could be?
Jesse Rogers (3:00 PM)
Bickell for sure cause he's cheap and another team might see his 17 goals last yr and fig they can get that or more out of him for 550,000. so start with him but depends how big the deal is...might have to include kruger or pirri
nick (Buffalo Grove)
sticking with the kruger thing... with the success of leddy being up in NHL last year before he was ready, do you think the same thing will translate with Freddy?
Jesse Rogers (3:01 PM)
Well yes, but simply because Kruger's IQ is very high and its easier to transition at forward than D..Leddy tailed off last year but that experience is helping now..
If you could have one recent Blackhawk back, who would it be: (a) Ladd, (b) Campbell or (c) Versteeg. No, I'm not giving you Byfuglien as an option...
Jesse Rogers (3:01 PM)
Ha. Well, if there was no cap hit associated with it then Campbell...with money than Ladd
If Emery keeps up with his performance throughout the season, do you think there will be possible contract extension for him? Or do you think he will be shopping around with other teams next season?
Jesse Rogers (3:04 PM)
Wont be shopped this season, lets start with that..I dont see why they wouldnt consider him for next year but he might want to try for a starting gig based on his record so far..why wouldnt he go for that so he's up in the air right now as far as his future
Hey Jesse! Thanks for the time...with Carcillo being, one punch to the head away from being out for the season from being concussed. Would the Hawks look to get another fiesty player like Carcillo on the team or leave it as is?
Jesse Rogers (3:04 PM)
Eh, dont think so..doing just fine with or without him in lineup...scott has come along as a player..you never know but its not a priority
Don (Columbus. OH)
Between your radio, twitter and chat commitments, do you have any down time? Do you get time off during the offseason I hope?
Jesse Rogers (3:05 PM)
I got about 3 hours coming in like 5 minutes!! lol. Hockey season is fun! Not work..
to go back to jwrs question, add niemi to that list and which is you answer?
Jesse Rogers (3:07 PM)
Oh boy, now youre putting me on the spot..the thing I LOVE about niemi is he's already done the 4 rounds in the playoffs thing and that cant be overstated...tough call..they have a good team without ladd, steeg, etc. so maybe niemi but tough call cause craw was good against van but thats 1 round...4 is so hard to be sharp for..
Jesse, I have a salary question for you. If a player has a front-loaded contract and then is traded, is the cap hit the same for the new team? Or would it shrink since for that team, the remaining AAS is lower?
Jesse Rogers (3:08 PM)
cap hit is the same and hes paid the same as the contract states...the cap hit is always the avg of the whole deal no matter what
I know the team is always looking to get better via trade, etc...but I don't know if Stan needs to do much tinkering with this team. The offensive stars are on fire, we've seen some secondary scoring of late, the defense and PK have improved from poor starts to the year...they aren't in first place for nothing.
Jesse Rogers (3:09 PM)
Yes, but dont be fooled..they will have injuries and I gurantee you more stuggles are coming...9 game road tripi n feb will have everyone hitting the panic button as the trade deadline approaches..hawks brass has to take step back and evaluate without emotion (unlike the rest of us)..so just keep that in mind...they arent quite playoff ready even if they look pretty darn good
Jesse Rogers (3:12 PM)
That's it for today. Thanks for all the great questions..Have a lot of repeat type ones so hopefully I answered what you wanted to know..follow me on twitter @espnchihawks..be tweeting from the game tonight..and of course check out my blog after the game for postgame coverage...thanks again..talk to you next week..
