Stephania Bell (11:05 AM)
Good morning and Happy Friday! Happy Memorial Day weekend, in fact. Hope everyone has something fun planned. I am looking forward to an injury-free weekend...You/
Deven (Miami, FL)
Hi Stephania. First time chatting you today. Chris Bosh says he's feeling great after suffering that strained abdominal muscle in Game 1 against the Pacers. Do you believe that? How long does it take for those injuries to recover?
Stephania Bell (11:10 AM)
Deven: Welcome to my chat world. I don't know that he's really feeling "great." But probably great in comparison to when it happened. ANd that's just for moving around in regular activity, not stepping on a court. The Heat have to be happy they have another few days but I'm not convinced he plays and if he does, the question will be whether he can be effective, esp running or jumping. Normally a couple months IF it heals on its own and doesn't require surgery.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE tell us when we will get to see Howard in Utley playing for the red & white in South Philly? We've heard NOTHING!!
Stephania Bell (11:12 AM)
TK: Don't think it's quite true that you've heard nothing. There's been frequent chatter about these two - but if by nothing you mean nothing that really reveals anything, then I'd agree. Part of the problem is no one really knows. Utley is essentially on his own timetable, everything based on how he feels one day to the next. He has begun fielding which is a good sign but far removed from playing in a game. Howard is doing baseball activity but at a low grade level as he works to get his strength back. And given the setbacks post-infection, that could take a while.
On yesterday's podcast you talked about how Oakland is having Cespedes grip the bat differently to avoid hand injuries. My question is, shouldn't San Francisco take a similar approach with Pablo Sandoval based upon his hand injuries the past two season?
Stephania Bell (11:14 AM)
Ryan: First of all, thanks for listening. Second, it really doesn't matter for Sandoval b/c now that he's had those injuries, they won't happen again...at least not that specific thing. When the hamate breaks, it is a portion called the hook which is what comes in contact with the bat. They surgically remove that fragment so once he's recovered it shouldn't be an issue going forward.
Dan C (Ronkonkoma)
Chris Young is prone to slumps we all know this, but any concerns this could be some lingering effects from his injury? Or is he just shaking off some rust?
Stephania Bell (11:18 AM)
Dan: I think the shoulder and the rust are both a bit of a factor. When a guy's been out for a while, he tends to be rusty, especially when he couldn't move his arm normally for a good portion of that time. And then even though he looked good on his rehab assignment, when you jump back into playing every day, full games, etc, etc sometimes you develop soreness which may not mean an injury setback per se, but it's a reminder that the body is still recovering. Think he'll be fine but the rest was probably warranted.
Dave (Wolcott, CT)
Speaking if Cespedes, when do you expect him and will there be any limitations when he returns?
Stephania Bell (11:20 AM)
Dave: As a follow to that earlier post, I do worry whenever a guy is trying to make a major adjustment as he will be. You're talking about him changing a bat grip, something he has never done. Yes, he could adjust...but that adjustment period may be difficult. They do not have a date for him since he's not taking live BP yet.
Post-surgery, do you think Bonafacio's thumb injury will diminsih his overall value and productivity for the remainder of the season?
Stephania Bell (11:21 AM)
Joey: Well it certainly shouldn't hurt his speed and SB value, but it may make him think twice about the headfirst slide. Any thumb/hand injury causes a bit of concern about how a guy will swing the bat but this is an injury we've seen other guys come back from without a huge drop in performance.
Will Ellsbury be able to return when he's first eligible on June 15?
Stephania Bell (11:22 AM)
Sean: Cherington has already said it would be the first week of July at the earliest. Soooooo...my thought is post-All Star. But the reality is we're too many steps away from a return to really even know the date. We have to at least get to where he's doing baseball activity before giving any real projection. But no, not June.
Should owners be worried about Daniel Hudson being 100% as he returns from this shoulder impingement injury on his throwing shoulder? Do you see this injury being an issue or recurring as he goes forward ROS? Thx!
Stephania Bell (11:26 AM)
Jon: These are the burning questions. I would hardly have confidence that he'll be 100%. Once a shoulder issue crops up for a player, you're going to worry about it coming back for the remainder of the season...and maybe even beyond. Hudson even said recently that his command wasn't where he wanted it to be but he does seem to be throwing without pain, the primary concern. Always the risk that this is recurrent.
Ethan (Victoria, TX)
Brett Gardner is available in my league. Is he worth picking up and stashing on the DL? What is expected of him when he returns? When is he expected to return?
Stephania Bell (11:30 AM)
Ethan: If you have tons of empty space, then maybe, but understand this is an injury situation where he has had more than one setback. Although the last one was minor, it's still a reminder that this thing is lingering around. Of particular concern is the fact that extending his arms fully to hit seems to be one of the aspects that continues to bother him. As long as that's the case, hitting is going to be a problem. On the plus side, once it improves, then I expect it to not be an issue once he returns. At this point it looks like a couple weeks at least.
Stephania, Sergio Santos -- Have you heard anything about how his recovery is coming and when we can expect to see him back on the mound for the Blue Jays? He's on 3 of my teams.
Stephania Bell (11:33 AM)
Mark: That is a lot of eggs in one basket, so to speak. Santos is working his way back to throwing. In a long toss program, then has to work his way back to the mound. Then factor in a rehab assignment of some sort. No timetable from the team but I'd say it's into June (maybe mid-June) before we see him.
Dan C (Ronkonkoma, NY)
Will Michael morse return closer to June 8 or June 1, I've heard both these dates as possibilities. Also, the lat problem seemed to only effect his throwing, which I don't care about as long as he plays, so he should be back to form, right?
Stephania Bell (11:38 AM)
Dan: Well, you may not care about his throwing...but the Nats do. And given his position in the OF, he actually needs to throw. Until everyone is confident that he can throw without issue, they won't let him back which is why it seems like the June 8 date is more realistic. Neither one is set in stone. Remember, the original setback happened when he was a day or two away from being activated. Since it never really did affect his hitting though you'd have to believe he should be able to perform at the plate without incident.
Report on Craig? Is he on track?
Stephania Bell (11:41 AM)
Rick: Apparently fielded some ground balls, took BP before game Thursday so that's a good sign. Of course the thing I always want to see is how the guy runs after a hamstring injury. Until he tests that in some form won't know if he can return when eligible (which is 6/1 I believe).
Any updates on the progress of Evan Longoria? I read that he's doing a bit of running. What's the latest?
Stephania Bell (11:45 AM)
Josh: Actually, that soft corner running (where they run wide arcs around the bases - and by run, it's more like a trot) is a first step in testing the hamstring. Just a first step though. Also doing some swinging of the bat. The original timetable was 6-8 weeks, leaving about 3 to go. Watch what happens when he starts amping up the running. That will be the telltale sign.
when do you think carl crawford is going to return? Is it worth stashing him on my DL spot? and is he going to perform well when he does come back?
Stephania Bell (11:47 AM)
Ray: He wants to be back before All-Star but has also said that he doesn't want a setback. Supposed to swing a bat this weekend but the bigger test will be how the elbow responds when he is able to throw. Think it's a big risk - wouldn't want him taking up space on my DL.
Follow up to your Bosh answer. Does that mean Austin Jackson won't just be out until his DL stint is up? That would be a real drag both for fantasy and himself as he was having a breakout year!
Stephania Bell (11:48 AM)
Adam: Will be interesting what they see on MRI today. True oblique injuries often show up clearly on MRI. If it turns out to be more serious then it could potentially extend another couple of weeks.
Do you know when Lance Berkman's surgery is today? I'm tired of clicking refresh on twitter.
Stephania Bell (11:50 AM)
Rick: Trust me. I'm tired of you clicking refresh too. Surgery was reportedly originally scheduled for 7 a.m. Sometimes the time changes. And, when he's done, the media is not the first they will alert to the results. So there is no information yet and may not be until much later in the day.
Will Vance Worley be able to throw as well as he was before the bone chip in his elbow? Mental impact greater than physical?
Stephania Bell (11:51 AM)
Bill: THe chip hasn't changed. The question was whether he could continue to pitch with it and pitch through the discomfort, even if it's something that requires an offseason procedure. Sounds like he was given the green light to go ahead but it's going to be tough. You hope it doesn't end up affecting his delivery in a way where he tries to compensate, ends up aggravating something else...
Is 12 weeks legitimate for Nicks to be back for the NYG?
Stephania Bell (11:53 AM)
Shane: Yes. The key is the bone healing. One of the pluses is that he's having surgery right away and the procedure itself is pretty minor. The small screw helps maintain the alignment so the bone should heal more efficiently. Once there is adequate healing he can push the activity. He has come back quickly from other stuff before so I'd be encouraged at least starting out.
Norman (New York, NY)
Brett Anderson was shutdown for forearm tightness, is this considered a setback or is it normal for Tommy John Surgery recovery.
Stephania Bell (11:55 AM)
Norman: Actually pretty normal in the sequence of events post-TJ surgery. Rarely do guys get through the recovery without a speed bump or two. Most important thing is to pay attention to it, shut him down for a bit as they have done and then resume the program once it settles.
Paul (Roseville, MI)
What is the latest on Chris Carpenter? You have already bummed me out with your views on two other injured players I have stashed, Gardner and Crawford. How about throwing me a bone?
Stephania Bell (11:58 AM)
Paul: Prepare to be more bummed out. He still has a long ways to go. Won't even start a throwing program for another month. THen, given how long he's been out, imagine how long it will take to get him back to competitive level. And then that does not take into account possibility of any setbacks. Sorry. You hit the trifecta of bad news.
I thought Jackson had an abdominal injury? You think it could prove to be his oblique?
Stephania Bell (11:59 AM)
Adam: Oblique falls under abdominal header. They called it a "left abdominal strain" meaning left side, generally oblique - but they may have chosen not to specify without imaging. After MRI may become more clear.
Stephania, when can we expect Desmond Jennings' return? Will he return on Sunday or a few days after that?
Stephania Bell (12:00 PM)
Richard: Not looking like Sunday. Might be this week but will have to keep an eye on daily updates.
Stephania Bell (12:01 PM)
Thanks everyone for coming. Need to vacate the room. Have a great weekend and stay healthy!
