Chris Mortensen (11:00 AM)
Good morning. What's on your minds?
Rob (San Antonio)
With the run of hamstring injuries Polamalu has had dating back to last year is it time to hit the panic button?
Chris Mortensen (11:02 AM)
Hamstrings, calf muscles, groin pulls...whatever, and on top of that concussion history that certainly makes one worry that his career is either at or nearing the crossroads.
Bills question - is the problem coaching or personnel? Who would you bring in to make an immediate impact to resolve the problem?
Chris Mortensen (11:07 AM)
Todd, I'm puzzled about the the Bills' problem. Let's remember that it is still early and the Bills are very much in the AFC East race, but when you have a defense that should be so much better it is very disappointing to see the amount of points allowed. And, clearly, Ryan Fitzpatrick hasn't shown he can carry this team when times are tough. When you have injuries on offense where guys are either missing or struggling while trying to play hurt, then this is what you get. You don't bring in anybody now to make an immediate impact. You work, you fix it and how will you feel if they win a road game in Arizona this week?
Good morning Mort, does Jahvid Best come back this week for the Lions?????
Chris Mortensen (11:08 AM)
Like you, waiting to hear. It appears to be close but you still have to get him truly acclimated to play football again.
Giants Niners. How are both teams playing compared to the end of last year? who do you like in this game?
Chris Mortensen (11:10 AM)
It's almost impossible to pick against the 49ers the way they have been rolling even if you don't think the domination of the Jets and Bills is a big deal. The Giants have problems and if their defensive line steps up, they have a chance. Otherwise, I expect the 49ers to win this game by at least 7-10 points.
Say the Titans end the season 1 -15 or 2-14, do you think Bud Adams has it in him to clean house or do they stick with the cornerbacks playing 15 yards off the line and the ever predictable offense being shut down every week next year? Horrible
Chris Mortensen (11:12 AM)
I would expect the Mike Munchak to make the changes he feels are necessary to fix this team.
Mort, are you still a believer in Romo? He looked awful the last game. Do you expect him to bounce back after the bye against an aging Ravens D?
Chris Mortensen (11:13 AM)
Do I believe Tony Romo is still an excellent QB? Yes. I think the Cowboys getting back C Phil Costa will help. I think they need to get the run game going with DeMarco Murray. A win over the Ravens would not be a surprise.
Good morning Mort! With Ridley's fumbling issues do you see Belichick sitting him for Bolden or Vereen?
Chris Mortensen (11:15 AM)
I would say Belichick would make it a priority to fix those problems but Ridley is very talented. I'm sure Belichick wishes they were allowed more padded practices to deal with this. But you cannot be a chronic fumbler and expect the same amount of carries.
Hey Mort! What do you think about the Tebow situation?
Chris Mortensen (11:17 AM)
I think the Jets used him appropriately Monday night with the lone exception that I would have let him try to finish the one red zone drive. I do not believe Tebow playing quarterback as a starter would fix it. if anything, I believe it could pretty much end the discussion that he can play QB as a starter. He's an asset to be used selectively.
You would hope the Titans would make changes hahaha, they are the laughing stock of the league hands down. What is the deal with Andre Johnson, is it the Texans run first scheme, drops, age? Do you see any big games left in him? Thanks Mort!
Chris Mortensen (11:20 AM)
Andre Johnson is an interesting discussion. I heard someone say the other day (Rich Gannon, I think, on Sirius XM Radio) that he believes the Texans need to move Johnson around in the formation, motions, etc., and I would agree with that. I certainly see big games left for Andre.
Is Tannehill the real deal?
Chris Mortensen (11:21 AM)
He certainly looks like it. He legitimately won the job when I think the Dolphins had another plan. He's big, accurate, good athlete and he had the advantage of knowing the playbook as a rookie because he had played for OC Mike Sherman at Texas A&M. I think they finally found their guy.
Do you expect the league to fine or suspend Slauson for the cheap shot on Cushing?
Chris Mortensen (11:24 AM)
I am anxious to see if the NFL fines him. There is a box where cut blocks are allowable and the Texans are among the teams that cut-block to key their running game. Was Cushing in that box? Either way, I didn't like the block. I would hope the competition committee continues to look at the issue.
Tough to watch the Raiders regress this year but is this necessary for the franchise to move forward? What is your opinion of the Reggie and the job that he is doing?
Chris Mortensen (11:28 AM)
Reggie McKenzie's hands were tied when he accepted the GM job but he knew what he was getting into - a huge salary cap mess with almost no draft picks. No team ever wants to acknowledge that it needs to take a step back in order to take two steps forward. In this case, McKenzie had no choice but I would have confidence he will build a roster that will win over the next few years.
Mort, the guys on NFL primetime seem to be having so much fun, is tha a fun set to work?
Chris Mortensen (11:30 AM)
Whether it's NFL Countdown, NFL Primetime, NFL32 or NFL Live, I can assure you that it is great fun. The guys have tremendous chemistry on and off the set and we have a strong set of producers who make the shows fun and, hopefully, informative.
James Walker the AFC East writer said Miami might be looking to move a QB - Moore and a RB - THomas to one of those needey teams do you buy it?
Chris Mortensen (11:32 AM)
Yes, I buy the possibility. The trade deadline is now the Tuesday after week 8 (used to be week 6) and so teams have more time to assess their own teams and needs. What teams don't want to do is sacrifice significant draft picks in 2013, having observed that most teams regret paying that cost.
Does Michael Turner still have some gas in the tank? The last 3 games the Burner has looked really fresh.
Chris Mortensen (11:35 AM)
That has been the Falcons' goal. Cut down some carries but keep him just as effective. That's easier to do when you have Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez, et all. I look at the Carolina game two weeks ago - Turner had 13 carries for 103 yards and 3 catches for 68 yards and a TD . I think that's a good model and keeps him fresh later in the season.
Chris Mortensen (11:36 AM)
Time to wrap up. I would still encourage you to watch us on NFL32, weekdays at 6 ET on ESPN2, Sunday NFL Countdown at 10 a.m. and follow on Twitter @mortreport. Have a great week and God Bless!
