William Wilkerson (3:59 PM)
Happy early Thanksgiving to everyone. We've got a lot of topics to discuss today: Texas' game with TCU; the 2013 football schedule was just released; hoops losing to, um, Chaminade, recruiting, turkey and dressing recipes, etc. Remember Texas plays USC at 4 p.m. CT on ESPN2. Let's get to it.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What Texas College Football Players will be playing in the NFL in 2013?
William Wilkerson (4:00 PM)
I think Goodwin will get a shot if he chooses to try. Vaccaro and Okafor for sure.
Eddie (San Antonio)
Who's the official starting safety next to Vaccaro? Thompson, Phillips, or Turner?
William Wilkerson (4:00 PM)
Adrian Phillips with MT listed as second string.
If JJ did not get hurt in the ou game and was equalling his production from the first half of the season to the second half, would he have left at the end of the season?
William Wilkerson (4:02 PM)
I don't think there is any question that he would have thrown his hat into the NFL Draft. Given how high up I was seeing his name in draft boards, it seemed like a pretty cut and dry choice for him. Now, I think he comes back. Teams are going to want to see what he looks like post injury before they pay him.
Osu v ou. Who ya got?
William Wilkerson (4:03 PM)
OU. It's at home. Landry Jones' last home game. Points will be scored in bunches but I think OSU will make one too many mistakes on offense and I don't like how they'll match up against OUs WRs.
Will RSJ come back home where he belongs are do you think his comments about texas passing game put the nail in the coffin..
William Wilkerson (4:04 PM)
I think the RSJ-to-Texas ship has sailed down the Brazos River and into College Station.
Man are we in for a long season with our hoop squad or what?
William Wilkerson (4:08 PM)
What, losing to Chaminade doesn't have you feeling positive about things? That was brutal from Texas' standpoint. On the bright side, Javan Felix looks like the real deal. He gets into the lane at will, attacks the paint, which you like to see, especially with bigs like Texas has to be able to grab offensive boards. However the Longhorns sorely lack a true scorer. Sheldon McClellan can shoot, no doubt. But I'm not so sure his game is suitable to get you 20+ per night. He's going to have to become a lot more selfish as Barnes said he asked him to be in the offseason. It's going to be a work in progress with how much youth is on this roster. But I think it will be a much different team with Myck back. Not so much from an offensive standpoint but from what he is able to do on the defensive side of things.
I really hope ISU gets moved up so they have more time for OU...maybe they can beat them this time...
William Wilkerson (4:10 PM)
For those that don't know Mike is pointing out the possibility of Texas' road game against ISU next year. It could be played on Oct. 3 (a Thursday) or Oct. 5. Texas plays OU the following week. I think Mack would be all for this game being moved to Thursday. The more time to prep for OU the better for the Longhorns. At least you'd think that would be the case.
Any news on Thomas Johnson? Is he done at A&M? Would he consider Texas again this time around?
William Wilkerson (4:15 PM)
Not much out there right now. He was with his family in Dallas when A&M played SHSU. His status with the team is uncertain at this point. If his reasons for leaving like he did are just, then I don't see why he wouldn't be able to stay with the team. It's hard for me to think he is unhappy at A
Derrin (Plano, TX)
Will the loss to Chaminade have an impact on Barnes recruitment of Randle and Frazier?
William Wilkerson (4:16 PM)
In the grand scheme of things, no. But it definitely can't help. Those types of players understand what type of impact their presence would have on a program. Texas isn't losing to Chaminade in 100 chances if Randle is on the team. Mark that down. But it's not a good look for Barnes.
Cowboys need an RB in the off season. Felix not great, Murray not as good as he first looked. A solid running game could get Dallas to the playoffs next year.
William Wilkerson (4:17 PM)
Call me crazy but I think they find their way in this season. I think the combination of Jones/Dunbar will be enough for Dallas to get these next two wins at home.
Derrin (Plano, TX)
Will, pretty rough start for Rick Barnes, in a critical for him and his program?
William Wilkerson (4:20 PM)
Maybe Chaminade just has Barnes' number. That was his second loss to them as a HC in the Maui Invitational. Also lost to them in 1991-92.
Ryan Miller (Dallas, TX)
How likely is it that OU loses to OK St, UT beats KSU next week, and UT has a high enough BCS ranking to win the Big 12's BCS spot?
William Wilkerson (4:23 PM)
If Texas wins out then it should be in line to get a BCS at-large bid, which is normally given to the Big 12's second-place team.
Trey (Ft. Worth)
If Texas wins out the next two games, what is the possiblity they get a BCS game.
William Wilkerson (4:25 PM)
Carter wrote about this earlier in the week. As he was saying, and I agree, if Texas wins out and overtakes KSU for second place in the Big 12 I think it has a great chance at landing an at-large bid, which the BCS normally gives out to the Big 12's second place team.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
What does your right pinky toe tell you about the direction of Marcell Harris' upcoming commitment?
William Wilkerson (4:25 PM)
That ugly toe of mine is pointing west toward Florida.
As a RB, I would love to join Texas. Any chance we get a top tier RB like Leonard Fournette? or is he basically down to Bama or LSU.
William Wilkerson (4:27 PM)
Basically down to Bama and LSU. Fournette is such a good player, though, you have to throw your hat in the ring regardless of if he has blinders already on for two schools. The same with Nathan Starks, who I think is a little more wide open at this point. Still, if he were to pick an out-of-state school I think he'd go OU before Texas because of the Sooners' history of recruiting his high school.
Which player is more likely to change positions at Texas. QB Jalen Overstreet or QB Tyrone Swoopes, and what will Raulerson play when he hits 40 acres? I heard he might have a shot playing TE
William Wilkerson (4:29 PM)
From what I hear about Raulerson, he could end up at center. If not there, he could play anywhere else on either line. I don't think you'll see him at TE though, especially with Durham on campus. As for your first question, that's really, really tough to say. If I had to choose one I'll say Overstreet. Swoopes' potential at the position is incredible.
Tony (Richmond, CA)
Are the Horns having some misgivings, second thoughts, behind the scenes about Swoopes?
William Wilkerson (4:30 PM)
Not to my knowledge at all. I think UT understands what it has in Swoopes. If Harsin can mold him into half of what he has the potential to be, then he could win a lot of games for Texas.
DO YOU THINK TEXANS ARE SUPERBOWL WINNERS?
William Wilkerson (4:31 PM)
AS A BRONCOS FAN THAT IS HARD FOR ME TO SAY, BUT I DO THINK THEY ARE THE LEADING CANDIDATE RIGHT NOW IN THE AFC.
What is with all of our 2013 recruits and these injuries?! No big deal, or a sign they may be injury prone.
William Wilkerson (4:33 PM)
It's really bizarre isn't it. Darius James, Erik Huhn, Deoundrei Davis and Kyle Hicks have all suffered serious injury. It's obviously not something they or Texas' coaches want but it's just a part of the game. James and Hicks have both been injured multiple times in their careers. I'd imagine Texas coaches are concerned about it but understanding that injuries happen.
Of the teams Texas beat this year (lets say they beat tcu and lose to Kstate) which one has the best to beat Texas next year?
William Wilkerson (4:34 PM)
TCU. Road game. Foreign environment. But it does come the week after a bye so Texas should be well rested and prepared.
My school played OT Demetrious Knox and RB Daniel Gresham this year, and thankfully, I did not play against them. 2ND STRING LUCK! lol, what are the odds that Knox joins Texas? Also, DE Xavier Phillips is a beast, any chance Texas starts recruiting him?
William Wilkerson (4:36 PM)
He's going to make his selection on Monday and I think there is a very, very good chance he ends up at Texas. I know he has said different things in the past about this school or that school moving up his lists. But Texas has, for the most part, always stayed firm at or near the top.
What are the odds that Diaz stays on staff next year and if not who would replace him?
William Wilkerson (4:40 PM)
His defense has played better as of late but I still think it's going to be difficult for him to stick around after some of the numbers/performances of this team. As for replacements, Kirby Smart is a popular name to throw out there.
You think we will ever play A&M again? As evident at the Hex Rally last night, I just can't get excited about TCU. Or Tech. Or whomever.
William Wilkerson (4:42 PM)
I don't think it will happen in the regular season for a very long time, if ever. DeLoss Dodds doesn't seem to be in any rush to reschedule them. The only way I see these two teams crossing paths are in a bowl game.
Ben (Wichita Falls)
does Big 10 expansion put any pressure on the BigXII to go out and get back to a twelve team conference in time for the BCS playoffs system ?
William Wilkerson (4:47 PM)
I think the Big 12 should look at 11 right now and add Louisville. It worked in the Big Ten for some 20 years. That would give the league some flexibility. They can stay with round robin schedule and not have to go back to a conf. championship game, which could end up knocking out a top contender whenever the four-team playoff kicks in.
B Jr. (St. Louis)
Any names that you can tease us with regarding the hunt for another 2013 Wide Out? Seems like the Rhodes and Treadwell ships have sailed.
William Wilkerson (4:49 PM)
Keep an eye on Laquon Treadwell.
What is your take on that Aggie QB, Johnny Manziel. Is he the "real deal" or just floating to the top of a bad crop of Heisman candidates this year?
William Wilkerson (4:53 PM)
Real deal. I grew up around San Antonio so I follow that city and its surrounding area very close. Manzel was about as electric a player to come out of the SA area in a very long time. What has impressed me the most about him is his arm strength. We all knew what he could do with his feet. But his ability to make the throw on the run and his touch on the intermediate-deep throws has been exceptional.
William Wilkerson (4:56 PM)
what is the big deal with RSJ?? hes got midlevel ability to outrun a linebacker in big12 because I personally beat him in a footrace.30 y/o 5'11" 230lb ex soccer player. I ran a 4.68 in highschool 60 lbs. lighter!
William Wilkerson (4:58 PM)
There's a lot to like about RSJ. He's an easy target for Longhorn fans because of his de-commitment but none of these things were being said about him while he was committed. He's going to be a stud wherever he ends up. His size, hands, speed, pedigree.
William Wilkerson (4:59 PM)
That'll be it for today's chat. Thank you all for stopping by. Texas is about to tip off with USC on ESPN2. Just a reminder, we will be chatting live from the TCU game on Thursday. Hope you'll join us. Happy Thanksgiving.
