Chat with Jamison Hensley
Welcome to SportsNation! On Thursday, ESPN.com AFC North blogger Jamison Hensley stops by to chat.
Hensley joined ESPN.com in 2011 after covering the Ravens for The Baltimore Sun for 11 years. A graduate of the University of Maryland, he lives in the Baltimore area with his wife.
Send your questions now and join Hensley Thursday at 3 p.m. ET!
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:03 PM)
Thanks for joining the chat. I'm glad you could make it today. Let's get this going and I'll try to answer as many questions over the next half hour as I can.
Kelly (Finksburg, MD)
Ray will be sorely missed. Your top MLB of all time is ____________ and top three LBs of all time are_____________
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:04 PM)
Top MLB is Ray Lewis. Top three LBs of all-time (I'm assuming not just MLBs) are Ray Lewis, Lawrence Taylor and Dick Butkus.
How is the NFL promoting player safety when Tom Brady gets fined 10k for an intentional kick to another player ... and Gore is fined more for a "sock malfunction"?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:05 PM)
I understand that the fine looks ridiculous in comparison. But most expected Brady not to be fined. So, this is a small victory.
Ravenous128 (Columbia, MD)
Jamison - Are the Ravens working on a long-term solution at LT? McKinnie's been resurrected, but I don't envision him in a Ravens uniform next season, and there's a few interesting names being floated (Jake Long). Thoughts?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:07 PM)
Unless I'm reading the cap numbers incorrectly, the Ravens aren't going to have the cap room to solve LT in free agency. So, I believe they'll either re-sign Oher and put him back at left tackle (a move I don't like) or sign McKinnie to a one-year deal. I don't think the Ravens would find a starting LT at the bottom of the first round.
Joel (Bawlmer, Hon)
What has been the bigger surprise in the Ravens Superbowl (I know I can't believe it either) run: The new look offensive line or the play of the defensive?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:08 PM)
Offensive line, by far. The Ravens defense had been playing well for the last eight to nine weeks. I never expected the offensive line to allow just four sacks in three playoff games. Unreal.
dan (lynchburg va)
What is your take on the future of Cary Williams with the Ravens? I believe you have said before Jimmy Smith is on the cusp of being a "bust", does that help Williams chances of staying with the team or are Ravens comfortable with the talent they already have?
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:09 PM)
Don't really see the Ravens going after Cary Williams because another team will probably pay more for him. The Ravens' four corners next year will be Lardarius Webb, Corey Graham, Chykie Brown and Jimmy Smith.
Hey Jamison, thx for spending your time for us!After the Steelers cut Rainey, do you see them not selecting Manti Te'o because of his hoax? Thx
Jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:13 PM)
The Steelers are going to have to be wary of character issues after getting burned with Rainey and Alameda Ta'amu. I'm also not sold on Te'o being a great inside linebacker. He's a little undersized for my taste.
Gio Frenda (York, Pa)
Will the Bengals draft a receiver or pick one up in free agency?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:14 PM)
Bengals feel comfortable at wide receiver with A.J. Green, Mohamed Sanu, Andrew Hawkins and Marvin Jones. I don't consider wide receiver a pressing need.
D-Bo (st pete, fl)
What do you think of the LB Brian Rolle signing in Pittsburgh? Foote is still a question mark to return, Spence is still unproven and Sylvestor and B.Johnson hardly see the field.. could Rolle actually make the 53man roster, maybe as a backup
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:15 PM)
Stevenson Sylvester is the guy that has to step up. Not sure if you can count on Spence as a starter next season until you see what he looks like on the practice field. Those are the guys you should focus on, not Rolle.
Brian (Frostburg, Maryland)
Good Afternoon. Love your column and have been supporter since Sun days. What do you believe is going to be a bigger factor for Ravens to contend with. Will it be mobile quarterback, or faster defense than Ravens used to seeing?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:16 PM)
Two keys are: Kruger and Suggs containing the outside so Kaepernick can't run wild and McKinnie vs. Aldon Smith.
Brandon (Newark, OH)
Mike Brown just hired me as the Bengals GM. My game plan is to re-sign Michael Johnson and Andre Smith. I will also sign the best wide receiver to hit free agency. Then I will use all of our draft picks on Safetys, Corners and Line Backers. Sound good to you?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:18 PM)
I think Bengals will sign either Johnson or Smith and put the franchise tag on the other. Not sure about your plans for WR as I explained earlier. You need to draft a safety, OLB and a running back with speed.
Michel (Timonium, Maryland)
Hey Jamison! Who do you think the Steelers fans will root for in the Super Bowl? Sure, the Ravens are their bitter rivals, but if the 49ers win, the black and gold faithful will no longer be able to boast about having sole posession of the most Super Bowl victories. Hmmm, that would make an excellent poll (hint hint).
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:19 PM)
I know the Steelers fans don't want the Niners to tie their Super Bowl titles, but I just can't see them rooting for the Ravens. Ever.
Ryan (London, ON)
Who is your odds of favorite to be the Browns starting QB next season, Brandon Weeden, Ryan Mallett, Alex Smith or Colt McCoy?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:21 PM)
Good question. I could see Alex Smith coming here because of the connection with Norv Turner. But I'm putting my money on Weeden. Full disclosure: I'm not putting a lot of money on him.
Caleb (Cleveland )
What grade do you give the Browns for hiring Lombardi, Chudzinski, Turner, and Horton?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:24 PM)
B-minus. I like the Turner and Horton hires. Chudzinski has a chance to be good, and I like the fact that he isn't calling plays. But the Browns find themselves in the same position with an inexperienced head coach with an inexperienced team. I'm still trying to figure out why the Browns went with Lombardi.
Dan (Pasadena, CA)
JH, which is more likely for the Bengals at RB: re-sign Scott or draft a speed back (probably with the Raiders' pick) like the guy from UCLA or Oregon?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:25 PM)
Speed back. BJGE did a surprisingly good job breaking long runs toward the end of the season but the Bengals need more of a big-play guy to compliment him.
Josh (Akron, OH)
How aggressive do you think the Browns will be in free agency this year?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:27 PM)
The Browns now have an owner who is willing to spend in free agency. I expect them to be active.
Eric (Baltimore, MD)
After hearing first hand from Ed Reed that he plans to return next season, how high is the possibilty that he doesnt return to the Ravens? I could always picture him going to New England until they beat them last week.
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:27 PM)
I get the feeling that the Ravens want to start fresh on defense and say goodbye to Ray Lewis and Ed Reed at the same time. It will be Terrell Suggs and Haloti Ngata's defense next year.
Do you think the Browns will have major shake-ups on the roster next year with Lombardi as head of player personnel?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:28 PM)
Don't expect a major overhaul in the first year. But I bet you that players will get weeded out over the next couple of seasons.
Tyler (Milan, Ohio)
With the draft class weak on offense at the top and the browns looking to improve their struggling offense, what are the chances that the browns trade down in the upcoming draft?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:29 PM)
Is this Tom Heckert?
Buy or Sell - With all thats going on in the Steelers camp these days; the Ravens will repeat as AFCN Champs next year.
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:30 PM)
Did we all of sudden forget about the Bengals?
Regarding Joe Flacco's contract situation, I don't buy the opinion that the Ravens have leverage because they can just use the franchise tag. Couldnt Flacco and his agent respond by saying "Fine, we'll play under the tag in 2013 and you can enjoy Tyrod Taylor in 2014 when I sign with another team." What could the Ravens possibly respond with?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:30 PM)
Ravens will put the franchise tag on Flacco for the next two seasons if it takes doing that. I don't see it going that far, though.
bradblackandgold (Berkeley, CA)
Hey JH. It is probably very exciting for you to have a team from the division still have meaningful football to play. I'm not going to the game, but I've always wondering what advice people in the sports world have for fans who plan on making the trip to the Super Bowl.
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:32 PM)
Get used to long lines everywhere.
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:32 PM)
That comes next Friday.
Michael (Cincinnati) [via mobile]
Comments from Chud can only suggest they are unsure of Weeden, at best. With Lombardi's feelings well known, I wouldn't bet a dime on Weeden. Banner and Co. surely have feelings on the matter and likely discussed in great detail during interviews???
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:33 PM)
Is there really a better option out there? It's not like Alex Smith and Ryan Mallett are Joe Flacco (see what I did just there).
Mike (Independence, KY)
Hi, Jamison. Your thoughts on Ed Reed potentially landing in Cincinnati if not in Baltimore? It makes sense from a personnel perspective. Thanks.
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:34 PM)
You can't rule it out because the Bengals have so much cap room. I still would put Patriots and Colts above them on Reed's wish list because of the head coaches.
who cares about the Bengals?
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:35 PM)
Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky and George Clooney. I'm sure I'm missing someone. Oh yes, I care about the Bengals.
jamison Hensley (ESPN) (3:37 PM)
Sorry, I have to go. Thanks for all of your questions. I wish I could spend a couple of hours and answer all of them. Hopefully, I will get a chance to chat next week from New Orleans. Have a great rest of the week!
