AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Good morning, gang! Back again we are for another 60 minutes of fantasy chattage. Second cup of coffee in hand... who is going to throw out the first pitch?
What do you expect from Teheran? He was just dropped and I need pitching. Name game! Teheran, Chacin, McCarthy, Hammel. Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
Teheran needs work and I wouldn't be stunned to see a Triple-A demotion if his Friday start goes poorly. Chacin a clear winner for me in that quartet.
A.J.,Aoki has looked really good last and this year but seems to get no love! He was ranked the 55th outfielder in the draft kit but hasn't he shown he is better than that? would he be worth having over Carlos Gomez, Melky Cabrera, or Shin-Soo Choo for this year?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
It's very early. Yes, Aoki has been "top 10" so far. Coco Crisp has been too. Very small sample size. I'd say Aoki was ranked pretty well in the draft kit - though in weekly leagues and points leagues, he was probably low.
Who to cut? Ruggiano or Alfonso Soriano
AJ Mass (11:05 AM)
I'd rather keep Ruggiano.
Geary (Bronx, ny)
Your thoughts on zito? Can he keep his up for the most part of the season?
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
Last time I checked, an ERA of 0.00 is pretty much out of the realm of possibility. So he can't keep "this" up - he's not Bob Gibson. But can he be a No. 3-4 SP for a fantasy team? Sure.
I know its early, but is there any cause for optimism for Dustin Ackley? Awful year last year and has had a slow start. Should I hold on in a 14 team league?
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
Obviously, way too early to write anyone off truly... but I can't say the optimism isn't running out.
Timmy (Athens, GA)
Dearest AJ- I picked up John Buck to ride out his hot streak but also noticed Chris Carter is picking things up as well. Worth dropping Buck and adding Carter?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
I take it position isn't a factor. To me, Buck will be more consistent for the next month, but the power likely doesn't keep.
Lawfirm of Brown, Gomez (Philly, PA)
I enjoy your work, AJ. Now help me decide who to keep out of Dom Brown, Carlos Gomez & Vernon Wells, please
AJ Mass (11:11 AM)
I'd rank em Wells, Brown, Gomez for now.
How long do we wait on Giancarlo Satnton before taking 75 cents on the dollar?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
I still think the floodgates will open a bit for him... he's not getting anything to swing at, but is showing a lack of patience. When he stops swinging at the garbage, I think he starts hitting.
Matt Wieters was just dropped in a league I'm in. Worth using #1 waiver priority to add him over Napoli?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I wouldn't make that swap just yet... but also want to add a comment on No. 1 waiver priority in general. Don't worry about it. When you need, you take. If your only concern is that next week something better might come along, you're playing this game the wrong way.
Why did Bedard only last 4 innings? Was considering him next week with two starts but not if hes not even going to throw 70 pitches.
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
He hadn't pitched in ten days and with a 13-run lead, it's not exactly like the team needed him to go any deeper. Frustrating if you had him, because an easy W was sitting there, but no need for concern going forward.
When does Herrera become the full time closer?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Don't think he does... I still think it's going to be a "don't use any one guy too much" scenario there - but he'll get some chances each week...
Ichiro, Bonifacio, or Juan Pierre for a team in need of steals?
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
I think Ichiro is the one who will hurt you the least in your quest.
Why did Matt Moore only last 5?
AJ Mass (11:23 AM)
Look at the line... all those walks add up to lots of pitches. It's April. Never a need to allow a pitcher to top 100.
At what point will Chase Utley's knees give out, cause he is looking good so far?!
AJ Mass (11:24 AM)
You know who I love? Optimists! That's who!
I want to trade R. Howard, Strasburg, A. Chapman and D. Jennings for Trout in a keeper league. I'm a fanboy. If you owned Trout would you take or turn down? Thanks AJ!
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
As in all trades, I'd have to weigh what I'm getting in terms of what else in my lineup is being replaced. But in this case, I'd probably ask you to throw in even more, because I have a feeling you're just reckless enough to do it.
Any concern over Heyward's slow start?
AJ Mass (11:28 AM)
Never been a fan, first off... so happily, he's not a problem to ME. I'd be more concerned, though if BJ were hitting .300 while Heyward struggled.
It seems the "don't overreact" mantra applies less to closers, since 2 have already lost jobs do to poor performance. Which brand name closers are you most concerned about? Any concern about Hanrahan, Putz, Rodney?
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Marmol was on thin ice to start with... so I'm not surprised there. And I do think Ax gets his job back... I'd probably be most concerned with Putz of those three, but not a one gives me red flags just yet.
Mike (Tonawanda, NY)
Who's your pick to Outwit, Outplay, Outlast??
AJ Mass (11:31 AM)
Haven't wavered... Cochran's to lose.
I gambled with Carl Crawford in the later rounds and so far so good! What do you see from him the rest of the way.
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Health is the only real concern here... he's an All Star when he's 100 percent. But let's be clear - once the season has started, forget about when you drafted players. It doesn't matter anymore. Don't get hung up on what a bargain Carl is if an offer does come your way - and don't keep a struggling first rounder just because of when you selected him.
Tom (State College)
Start AJ Griffin today?
AJ Mass (11:35 AM)
Have him ranked No. 3 in DN for the day, but a lot of that is a function of the short schedule. Probably not starting him if I'm choosing a stream.
Do you trust haren to not give bombs to dunn, pauly, and rios today?
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
Even without a DH... not touching Haren.
Would you trade Wade Miley for RA Dickey?
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
I would not, but Miley was a pitcher I drafted in as many leagues as possible... I would trade for Dickey as I can't imagine he stays this awful... but I'm just very high on Wade.
speaking of struggling first rounders: thoughts on Kemp? I received a trade offer of Stanton and Hamels for him.
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Say you thought Stanton would hit 40 HR and now are thinking you have to scale that back to 30, based on the slow start. That still means from this point on he hits 30. I'll make that swap and add an ace to my rotation.
Dave (Burlington, VT)
I need a 2-starter next week: McCarthy or Bedard?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
I'd go with Bedard.
Brandon (At work)
Strategy questions from a FB newb: on a nine man staff, how many SP's and RP's do you typically carry? And do you typically just leave a spot open when someone has a day off or do you fill it with someone from your bench? It's my first year of FB. Thanks for the help.
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
Depends on a lot of factors - how many transactions you can make each week, how often you need to set your lineup, roto vs. H2H...how much bench you have. There is no one answer. Trial and error is the best teacher, though.
Duda for real? What kind of stats would you project for the rest of the season?
AJ Mass (11:44 AM)
Not really. Would be surprised with .250 and 25 HR.
d (st louis)
Obligatory Halladay question - how long to wait before dumping him? He only cost me a 9th round pick, so I won't feel that bad just dropping him?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
I'd have him on my bench right now, but not cutting him until at least one more start - my guess is that if it's a bad one, there might be an "injury" to blame and a trip to the DL. But I'd say that if I drafted him in Round 1 or in Round 25... forget that unless you're in a keeper where it may mean something down the line.
Robby (Austin, TX)
Joey Votto last home run came on June 24, 2012. That is 0 HRs in his last 160 ABs or so. Should I be concerned?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
Yes. It's a reason I had him much lower than others in the preseason. Until I see some power, I'm concerned it may not ever fully return. But concern does not equal panic.
Thoughts on Aceves vs. the O's today?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Don't like him... he's not likely pitching past five, even if he's solid. Makes chances of a win very small.
Parnell (COBL (Philly))
Rutledge WAS my starting SS but I am worried about his lack of production so far. Should I drop him for Simmons?
AJ Mass (11:50 AM)
Because dropping a Colorado bat for a player who might be worse in every category is a good idea?
Follow up to Votto! what do you think is contributing to his lack of power?
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Last season it was clearly the injury. We can easily place the blame on that. This year, he's getting a lot of fastballs and hitting little in the air... could still be lingering effects...
Stanton and Mets rumors heating up. Thoughts on this?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
With every hit that Buck gets, it makes more and more sense. As long as we're only talking d'Arnaud and Wheeler, it's a no-brainer... but if it costs much more than that? Can't do it.
Bruce (Big D)
Question on your DAILY NOTES rankings for pitchers -What does it mean if you have a pitcher with a 7 or 8 QR ranked below another pitcher with a 4 QR on the same day? Which is more important - your QR ranking or the daily ranking? Please clarify
AJ Mass (11:58 AM)
The QR is math based on past performance, the ranking is my opinion of how much I trust the math. When you see a high QR lower than expected on the list you can infer that I don't like the start. If you see a low QR higher than expected, it means that even with a bad matchup, I do like the start.
Ted (Spencerport, NY)
AJ, just wanted to say that I thoroughly enjoyed your book. No accompanying question, just praise & a recommendation for others to get it.
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
How could I not print that one?
Marwin Gonzalez on your radar at all?
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
Not really... but if I needed a SS, it does appear like he's going to work his way out of a platoon and into a full-time spot.
AJ Mass (12:01 PM)
That's the whistle, gang! Sorry I couldn't get to all the questions - but in 60 minutes, that's rarely going to be the case. I am on twitter (@ajmass) and try to answer queries there... until the next time, as always, good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
