AJ Mass (11:00 AM)
Good morning, gang! We've got 60 minutes up ahead for fantasy chattage, so let's get to it. Spoiler alert! I'm going to trade my second cup of coffee in so that all of you can have a second cup of coffee... so don't vote me out! Who is up first?
Just was offered Strasberg for Marte straight up and obviously I accepted. I can see the vetoers lining up- any way to counter the argument?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
If you are going to allow trading, you allow trading. And what are they going to do if Strasburg's arm falls off in his next start after veto? We play the game because we DON'T know what will happen, not because we do.
What will be the end outcome with the closer situation in ARI?
AJ Mass (11:02 AM)
I think Bell gets the job and runs with it.
I've given up on Hosmer and dropped him in my 10 team mixed. LaRoche or Homser ROS?
AJ Mass (11:03 AM)
Nice save, sir. I like Homser over LaRoche the rest of the way.
J. Fernandez & Slowey available and I need a pitcher after Halladay's fiasco... which 2 of these pitchers do i pick up?
AJ Mass (11:04 AM)
Personally, I lean Slowey. Not totally buying what he's doing, and the W's are not going to be there, but neither will they be for Fernandez.
Thoughts on Carl Crawford? Would you trade him for a Chris Sale or Matt Moore type of pitcher?
AJ Mass (11:06 AM)
Still hurting and will continue to miss a few games per week until he's 100 percent, but even with that, I like his potential for production better than those two arms.
Matt (San Mateo)
Hi AJ. Whom do you like ROS - Hamels or Price? Thanks!
AJ Mass (11:07 AM)
It's Cole, but it's not a slam dunk call.
Why is so hard to sell high? I know from a practical standpoint that if I could move Cuddyer & Cingrani for Verlander, I should do it. And yet, I don't want to! I want to believe that Cuddyer stays healthy and goes .280 30hr
AJ Mass (11:08 AM)
You answer your own question... it's very hard to walk away from a blackjack table when you're on a winning streak. That's human nature.
Buy low on Gio or stay away?
AJ Mass (11:10 AM)
If I'm replacing Scott Feldman I buy. If I'm getting Gio for Alex Cobb, I don't. To me, it's always a relative thing.
what can be done about the Oak/Clev game last night with horribly missed call costing the A's atleast a shot at extras...instead the ump uses replay and STILL misses what looks like a pretty easy call. I dont like either team...so im not upset the a's got screwed...just in general that is unacceptable!!
AJ Mass (11:12 AM)
Buster Olney blogged about the call and his view is pretty much on par with mine. Bud Selig CAN intervene if he chooses to, but probably won't. I still think having a dedicated replay umpire who also handles official scoring (and not a hometown reporter) is the way the league needs to go.
Will Hellickson turn it around?
AJ Mass (11:13 AM)
I see slightly better times on the horizon for him, but not by a whole heck of a lot.
who turns it around and has a better season...hamilton or bruce?
AJ Mass (11:14 AM)
Far more optimistic with Bruce.
Fowler and Marte off to hot starts, though Fowler has slowed down quite a bit. Who ends up with better stats ROS?
AJ Mass (11:16 AM)
I like Dexter a little bit more the rest of the way. I can't see Marte maintaining the No. 1 overall spot under any circumstances.
In A (Vacuum)
Rank em ROS: Moreland, McLouth, Saunders
AJ Mass (11:18 AM)
Right now it's Nate, Saunders, Moreland. Going to spend the weekend working on my top 250 for the staff re-rank project that will run shortly... but that's where my head is at the moment.
H. Bell or Tazawa?
AJ Mass (11:19 AM)
Bell for me...but it's close.
Zach (St. Louis)
Freese or Middlebrooks ROY?
AJ Mass (11:20 AM)
No broken ribs? Will.
Adrian Gonzalez--health concerns?
AJ Mass (11:21 AM)
Somewhat - too many recurrences for my taste. But when he's in there, he's on.
Would you pair Marte and another player and try to target Kemp in a trade sell high buy low? Thanks
AJ Mass (11:22 AM)
If you pair Marte with another player, you're not selling high/buying low. The point is to make the deal 1-for-1 and get optimal value for Marte and Kemp at a bargain cost.
Mark (Bellefonte, PA)
What's your rule of thumb for comparing batters to pitchers in trade offers?
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
I have developed a formula for comparing the value of apples to oranges over the years and use that to make my comparisons. Generally speaking, as the year goes along, SP value drops compared to hitters because of limited starts and less potential positive impact of ratios, but of course, your scoring systems may vary.
kenny powers (myrtle beach)
AJ Mass (11:25 AM)
Yup. Lot of K's and a lot of fly balls. May well have a nifty debut, but when contact gets made, watch out.
Time to say sayonara to Ike Davis??
AJ Mass (11:26 AM)
Yes, I think even the Smoak Monster may leave you less lost at this point.
Cingrani worth keeping over Morrow, Garza, Beachy
AJ Mass (11:27 AM)
My concern with Cingrani is the "second time around syndrome" but as long as he's still got games with those who haven't seen him, I'm rolling him out there.
AJ need your help. Please tell my league that Hunter Pence for Craig Kimbel should not be vetoed two different times!
AJ Mass (11:30 AM)
Hunter Pence for Craig Kimbrel should not be vetoed two different times. Again, if your league allows trading, you need to allow trading. Period. Unless there's an obvious 10-for-1 dump trade in the works, or you're sending your brother Matt Harvey for a bowl of soup, you allow everything to go through.
Who's your top 5 hitters for a points league right now?
AJ Mass (11:32 AM)
Haven't run the numbers today, but I'd say on a PPG basis to-date, it's Miguel Cabrera, Coco Crisp, David Ortiz, Nolan Arenado, David Wright.
Doc Terminus (Passamaquoddy)
What's your favorite format to play in?
AJ Mass (11:33 AM)
Full-season roto. I personally do not and never will be able to enjoy the vicissitudes of a weekly H2H in baseball.
What if its really good soup?
Is Tillman for real? Or do you see a drop off?
AJ Mass (11:34 AM)
I see a lot of luck in terms of baserunners allowed, BAA and that ERA. To me, that screams drop-off.
Help w Utility spot ROY (or at least right now!) Soriano, Hafner, or Moreland? Deep 12 Team Mixed Roto
AJ Mass (11:36 AM)
Right now, I go Hafner of that trio.
The vicissitudes are what makes H2H fun.
AJ Mass (11:37 AM)
Maybe to you... to me, you might as well throw darts on a one week sample size.
Seager or Lawrie ROS?
AJ Mass (11:39 AM)
Call me crazy if you will, but I like Seager even over Beltre.
Pujols or Encarnacion ROS?
AJ Mass (11:40 AM)
Not as high on Edwin as I think I need to be to declare him the winner in this one.
Jaime Garcia & Ryan Dempster have put up some good numbers to start the year. Where's the love...or am I just over-optimistic things will continue?
AJ Mass (11:41 AM)
Both have been No. 4 SP value to-date, so if that continues, if you want to call that love - or not - so be it.
Konerko is well under his 2012 OBP & power seems to be lagging as well. Will he turn it around or time to hit the waiver wire?
AJ Mass (11:43 AM)
BA will bounce back a bit, which certainly will help the OBP. It certainly depends on who is there for you, and there may indeed be a better option...but is he in top 150? Yes.
Lee (Ft. Lauderdale)
Yes or no - the umpire in the CLE/OAK game last night had Chris Perez and was down saves?
AJ Mass (11:46 AM)
I do not think the umpires were shady. I think the problem is that they are being asked to "be certain" before changing calls and they are not remotely qualified to handle replay decisions. They're put in a situation where they're being set up to fail. I really don't blame them for the call.
Mike (San Diego)
You like CC today at Coors?
AJ Mass (11:47 AM)
He's No.2 in DN.
Sal Perez (KC)
what to do with me?
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Do you have some answers for a baseball-loving Canadian??
AJ Mass (11:49 AM)
Only if you can explain what Topaz did.
RSS (Detrua (oit))
Hector Santiago...what do you think?
AJ Mass (11:51 AM)
Never judge a pitcher by how good they look in Flushing. There's potential there, but he's a streamer for now.
I got a Win from Masterson in last night's game so Bud better mind his business. If he wants to start retroactively overturning things he can start with A. Galaragga's blown No-Hitter and/or Johan Santana's bogus No-Hitter !!!!!!
AJ Mass (11:53 AM)
Chillax, Pete. The perfecto was not a reviewable play and official scoring decisions belong to the local sportswriter - which should be changed, but that's how it is. This is a case where the umps were allowed to, and did go, to replay. And because of that, I think it falls into an area of "correctable error."
Do like Brandon Moss better than Konerko?
AJ Mass (11:55 AM)
Right now, yes.
Best stash of the bunch, in terms of call-up likelihood, playing time, and production - Taveras, Grandal, d'Arnaud, Liddi, and Yelich?
AJ Mass (11:56 AM)
For this year only? It was d'Arnaud for sure before injury and still may well be if he heals in time. Oscar is second.
Run away from Cubs closer spot?
AJ Mass (11:57 AM)
I'm willing to give Fujikawa the ball once he's healthy.
Building on your pitchers for hitter comparison, been offered bruce for weaver, fair?
AJ Mass (11:59 AM)
In terms of YTD value and the risk that Weaver's injury entails, yes.
AJ Mass (12:00 PM)
That's my time for today, gang. As always I thank ye for the queries and can answer more on Twitter if you're so inclined (@ajmass). Until the next time, we wish you good luck and may the odds be EVER in your favor.
