James Walker (4:00 PM)
Welcome to our AFC East chat. Let's get right to it.
Jared (Naples, FL)
It's fairly obvious the Dolphins' defensive personnel is better suited for a 3-4 defense. Any chance Kevin Coyle opts to switch?
James Walker (4:02 PM)
The Dolphins do have good personnel for a 3-4, but Coyle is not that type of coach, Jared. What I do anticipate is Miami using some 3-4 looks, particularly on passing downs. The goal is for Miami to get to the QB.
I will keep submitting this question until I get an answer! who will the Dolphins be playing in Super Bowl L?
James Walker (4:04 PM)
No need to keep submitting. The Dolphins won't be playing anyone in the Super Bowl because they won't make it this year. Sorry to bring you bad news. But I think you understand if you're a realistic fan.
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
Who do you think that the Jets should Start as QB in 2013?
James Walker (4:06 PM)
Hey, Chris. I said on draft weekend that the Jets should not waste time and hand the ball to Geno Smith. Mark Sanchez is on borrowed time and he represents the past. He will be gone next year once the Jets pay his $8.25 million salary. Why not provide Smith experience? The Jets are not a playoff team regardless of who's under center.
Keanu (Honolulu) [via mobile]
Who do u think will get more carries during the regular season: Gillislee or Daniel Thomas?
James Walker (4:08 PM)
It's too early to say, Keanu. I've watched both players in practice the past three weeks, and I've seen both players make plays. Right now the coaching staff knows and trusts Daniel Thomas more so he's with the second team. But the competition will get heavy at RB once the pads come on.
James Walker (4:08 PM)
By the way, I've heard very good things about Mike Gillislee and his play at Florida. He's a decisive guy who is physical and falls forward. Gillislee seems like the type of RB Miami wants on offense.
MH (San Francisco) [via mobile]
All the talk about Fins secondary has been about Grimes. What about Marshall who is also coming off an injury?
James Walker (4:10 PM)
Fair point, MH. Grimes has played pretty well so he's getting a lot of attention. The other CBs aren't making as many plays. Richard Marshall is getting work with the first team. He's healthy but I haven't seem many flashes from him at this point.
D'Andre (Odd, WV)
JW great bloggin man. Da'Rick Rogers is already being criticized by some for staring down a DB after a big reception in OTA's. Does he even have a chance in B'lo if every step he takes is being stared at with a microscope?
James Walker (4:13 PM)
Yeah, I thought it was interesting that Doug Marrone was breathing down his neck for that. It shows how short his leash is in Buffalo after a long list of off-the-field issues in college. Rogers needs to realize that this may be his only chance in the NFL. If he wasn't so talented, Rogers may not get this chance with such a long rap sheet. No one drafted him. I don't think Buffalo will be afraid at all to cut bait if the team sees any major signs.
Candy (Slippery Rock) [via mobile]
Hey James, how is the Oline looking for Miami in particular Martin?
James Walker (4:16 PM)
I try not to write about the o-line much this time of year. To be honest, you can't tell much without pads and with minimum contact. I've seen Jonathan Martin and has been impressed with his increased size and more fluid movement. But I think the jury is still out. I will be able to answer this better in training camp.
Eli (Egypt )
Hi James. You said earlier today that Tom Brady is on the decline. Does this mean that Tanny is now the #1 QB in the division?
James Walker (4:20 PM)
I think a lot of people misunderstood the post. Read it again. I wrote it as a question, because my colleague Matt Williamson believes Tom Brady is on the decline. I didn't say that. I simply presented both sides, such as Brady's recent playoff struggles the past two years and his improved QBR the past five seasons on the good side. I presented Williamson's opinion, mixed with facts on both sides to let the audience decide. Somehow it got twisted to me saying Brady is on the decline.
How has Dion Sims looked paired with Keller and has Tannehill really showed at lest up to now good progress?
James Walker (4:23 PM)
Sims is like most rookies. One week I thought he had a solid practice. But the past two weeks I haven't seen much from Sims. He must consistently flash to earn playing time. One big surprise has been the play of TE Michael Egnew. He's making more and more plays every week. I wrote about Egnew in the AFC East blog. You should check it out.
Can you give your opinion who would be the top QB in the next five years?
James Walker (4:24 PM)
Tom Brady will be the top QB in the division until he retires. He wants to play until he's 40, so we will see.
James Walker (4:25 PM)
By the way, should I do a "Tannehill-Sanchez-Geno Smith-Kolb-EJ Manuel Watch" this year? I'm thinking about passing, since there will probably be some QB changes during the season and it's pretty safe to say Tannehill is the No. 2 QB behind Tom Brady.
Deven (Buffalo, NY)
Who should start on opening day: Kolb or Manuel?
James Walker (4:28 PM)
The best QB should play. It sounds silly, but I don't think there's pressure on Buffalo to go either way. If Kevin Kolb starts, that's why they got him this year. If Manuel starts, he's a first-round pick who can use the playing time. This situation is a little different than New York's.
cgc5783 (WB, NC)
You should just do a Brady-Tannehill-QB1-QB2 watch and just guage them week to week. All inclusive.
James Walker (4:29 PM)
Nah. I think we know the No. 1 QB in the AFC East. And most people would agree on No. 2. That was the point of starting this two years ago. We didn't have an answer. Now we do. So it's time to put that on the shelf.
What main 5 has been getting 1st team reps on the Oline protecting Tannehill in these OTAs been getting a lot of mixed info on it?
James Walker (4:31 PM)
The five o-linemen on the first team have been (right to left) Clabo, Jerry, Pouncey, Incognito and Martin. Occasionally, others get reps in practice and are worked in. But this has been the main five with the starters.
Do you think Vernon, Olivier is going to have a bigger role in the defense and how has he looked
James Walker (4:34 PM)
I like Olivier Vernon. But I'm not sure what his role will be now that Miami drafting Dion Jordan No. 3 overall. Vernon was solid off the bench last year. He had 3.5 sacks in limited playing time and was good on special teams. I think Vernon is ready for a bigger role off the bench, but Jordan will probably take away some of Vernon's playing time. Miami needs pass-rushers and both can get to the QB.

How can you say the dolphins don't have a chance. They have one of the all around best rosters in the league
James Walker (4:36 PM)
I didn't say the Dolphins don't have a chance. Everyone has a chance. I said Miami won't play in the Super Bowl this year. That's my take. If you disagree and you think Miami will play in the Super Bowl this season, that's fine.
kent (port st lucie, fl)
How do you feel about the Dolphins canning Dansby and Burnett for semi un proven LB'S?
James Walker (4:38 PM)
Semi-unproven? Dannell Ellerbe just helped lead the Ravens to a Super Bowl. I would say that's proven. Miami wanted to get younger, more athletic and improve in pass coverage. The Dolphins did that with Ellerbe and Wheeler. They had the money to spend, so they used it.
Who gets starting game reps in the NFL first? Manuel or Geno?
James Walker (4:40 PM)
Both have a chance to start in Week 1. But if I had to pick between the two, I would say Geno Smith.
Kumar (Tallahassee, FL)
What are the chances of the Dolphins getting a WC spot or, dare I say, winning the AFC East?
James Walker (4:42 PM)
No predictions for me yet, Kumar. I want to see all four teams in training camp and the preseason first. But I like what I see from Miami in OTAs thus far.
Ed (Queens Village)
Who are your top 5 or 10 players in AFC East not named Tom Brady? I didn't include Mr. Brady because he is great at what he does yearly.
James Walker (4:44 PM)
I did "Walker's Fab 40" back in February after the season. Check it out for my rankings of the top 40 players in the AFC East.
How about supplanting the Tanne-Sanchez-Fitz watch with power rankings for another position across the division? RB, WR, DE?
James Walker (4:45 PM)
Interesting idea. This is something I may consider. But I'm not sure which position is most up for debate.
kent (port st lucie, fl)
Is this an ALL or NOTHING season for Rex Ryan, is he on a HOT seat?
adam (utica) [via mobile]
Will maronne's new intensity help buffalo pull out more wins in close games that they always seemed to lose under gaily?
James Walker (4:48 PM)
You know, I liked Chan Gailey as a person and from a media perspective. His interviews were usually honest without a lot of coach's speak. However, Gailey's in-game coaching wasn't very good. Buffalo did lose a lot of games in the fourth quarter, and that has to point to coaching. Ryan Fitzpatrick's untimely turnovers also deserve blame.
James Walker (4:49 PM)
I don't know Doug Marrone's in-game coaching enough to say whether it will be better or worse. My guess is it will improve, because the bar isn't very high from an in-game coaching perspective. I just don't think that was a strength for Gailey.
When will Sanchez get cut?
James Walker (4:50 PM)
Mark Sanchez will not get cut this season. The Jets owe him $8.25 million guaranteed regardless if he's on the roster or not on the roster. The Jets may as well keep him until next year.
James Walker (4:54 PM)
Kent, my mistake. Yes, it is all or nothing for Rex Ryan this year. The Jets are not providing a number, but I think he cannot have another losing season. New GM John Idzik didn't hire Ryan and won't hesitate to bring in his own guy.
who gets more touches spiller/jackson
James Walker (4:54 PM)
C.J. Spiller, no question. Doug Marrone won't make the same mistake Chan Gailey made.
From what you have seen so far in OTAs will Thomas make a push for that #1 spot over Miller?
James Walker (4:56 PM)
Lamar Miller is the start, Marco. The Dolphins are leaving things open, but Miller will be the starter unless there is an injury. I expect at least two RBs to get a lot of playing time this year. It could be Miller and Thomas or Miller and Gillislee.
Sean [via mobile]
You have been watching dolphins otas, can u compare this year from last year? Thanks
James Walker (4:58 PM)
Yes, Sean. A lot more talent and speed this year. One thing that stood out last year was the amount of drops. WRs were not getting open and couldn't catch. We saw some of that in the regular season. This year there's a lot more plays made by the WRs and TEs. The Dolphins expect more of that to happen this season.
James Walker (5:00 PM)
Everyone, thanks for all the good questions. Be sure to check out the AFC East blog and find me on Twitter @JamesWalkerESPN if you want to continue the conversation.
