Stephania Bell (11:46 AM)
Happy Friday everyone...The chat will run until 12:30 today so let's get right to your questions...
It seems like Vereen has a pretty good shot at playing this week. How many touches do you see him getting monday night?
Stephania Bell (11:49 AM)
Andrew: I think he has a very good shot at playing. Think it's a matter of the Patriots deciding where and how much to use him (making it hard to predict the touches. I do think he gets a fair amount of work first game back, perhaps still in the single digit touches but on the field a decent amount...I'll throw out a guess - 8?
B Mand (Sarasota, FL)
Any word on Tony Gonzalez?
Stephania Bell (11:50 AM)
B: Not there during open portion of practice again today. Worrisome. Still think he does what he can up to the last minute to play but definitely worrisome.
Ms. Bell - You have been skeptical Percy Harvin would be effective returning this week from his hip injury. Has anything occurred for you to believe he will be a major contributor v. the Vikings?
Stephania Bell (11:52 AM)
Dante: Just to be clear. Not that I don't think he can be effective, just think he has a limited outing. And while many times we hear that a team plans to limit a player when he comes back and then doesn't, I think this is different. He is coming off a major surgery and overdoing it could threaten him going forward. Remember his first week of practice? Then they had to pull way back the next week. This is a good first test, then they have a bye, then I think he does more.
Mark Shell (Harrisburg, PA)
Hey Stephania, any news on Michael Floyd for Arizona? Think he'll play?
Stephania Bell (11:54 AM)
Mark: Yes, he says he'll play. Seems like he's doing enough to potentially be ready. Was catching balls yesterday at shoulder height. Couldn't throw overhead but that's not part of his game so he may do enough to go. But, a hard landing on that injured AC joint could force an early exit. No way to predict.
Any chance I get McFadden back for the stretch run?
Stephania Bell (11:55 AM)
Jon: There's certainly a chance; the question is can you trust him? Twice injured same hamstring in a guy with long-standing soft tissue injury history.
Ryan (Dallas/ Auto Update)
Auto Update is so frustrating as I am sure you have it turned ON! NEED SOME TECH SUPPORT! haha What's going on with H. Douglas's knee?!
Stephania Bell (11:57 AM)
Ryan: Trust me. It is on on my screen and I have reset the system. So, not sure what to tell folks. No info given about Douglas's knee but he is back at practice today which is an encouraging sign.
How will Peyton Manning's high ankle sprain affect how he plays Sunday night? Enough that you would be willing to start the Chiefs defense?
Stephania Bell (12:00 PM)
Scott: I might start Chiefs defense anyway. They have clearly been strong and will make it more difficult for Manning and co, even though I think they (Broncos) are still favored. But they could force some turnovers. As far as Manning, it will force him to get rid of the ball sooner, perhaps even more time in the shotgun (he needs to avoid getting in a pile tackle around his ankles. May also make it a little tough to hand the ball off to the left especially. But he's so tough and so good at adjusting, I don't think we'll see a whole lot of evidence other than mobility even less than usual.
Is Tate one bad hit away from ending his season with the cracked ribs?
Stephania Bell (12:02 PM)
Matt: Don't know about season-ending but always the chance for taking a hit that forces him out of the game. I'd say he's close to being out of the woods though. If he gets through another week, he'll be on the better side of healing and the threat of something like that becomes less and less.
Should we be worried that Vareen has not been activated off of IR by now? Or is this going to be a last minute thing that occurs on Monday?
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Mark: Being the Patriots, I am not surprised. Not sure when it happens but I expect it will.
At this point who am I better off starting Graham or J. Thomas
Stephania Bell (12:03 PM)
Does Vernon Davis play this week?
Stephania Bell (12:05 PM)
Kevin: Too soon to know. But there are some encouraging signs. Back-to-back practices (means he did not have symptoms after first practice that would prevent a second) but he still needs to be cleared for contact and released to play by outside neurological consultant. And, of course, have no recurrence of symptoms right up until the game. So he's going the right direction but team won't commit yet.
Ryan F. (Tulsa, OK) [via mobile]
I'm sure we all remember Megatron's surprise inactive earlier this season. Is that in play again this wk?
Stephania Bell (12:06 PM)
Ryan: Don't think so. He's in the "management" of the injury category. Yes, there's always a chance but he's back at practice today and I expect he plays.
Can we get a Roddy White update? Now it's the shoulder?
Stephania Bell (12:08 PM)
Brian: Yep, another area. DOesn't sound like they think it's serious but all their best receiving options are dinged in some way (White, Douglas, Gonzalez) so limiting practice makes sense. Get the impression Douglas (who's practicing today) and Gonzalez (who isn't) were the bigger concerns.
Do you think Foles is the starter b/c they want to stay with the hot hand or is Vick really still ailing? Maybe both?
Stephania Bell (12:09 PM)
Kimberly: Both, although I think Foles now has the reins until he is either injured or regresses harshly. Vick is still limited by the hamstring but even as he approaches full recovery, it's not like before where they will plyg him back in.
Hey Stephania! Amendola & MJD 'healthy" for this wk? thx
Stephania Bell (12:11 PM)
JW: I think Amendola is the healthiest he's been all year since the groin injury. The bye last week was probably very helpful for him. Still a chance he could suffer a setback with the groin (or some other injury for that matter) but think he is the best he's been in a long while.
Do you think Terrelle Pryor will play this week?
Stephania Bell (12:13 PM)
Dan: This is a real mystery for me, although I'm inclined to say yes. But after last week when he didn't reveal to the team just how lousy his knee felt and then went out and struggled and had to be replaced, I imagine they'll want more "proof" that he is really well enough to trot out there as the starter. Put it this way. Even if he plays, I expect his run game to be limited and a lot will hinge on what he can to today in practice.
Mark Shell (Brick House)
Looks like Martellus Bennett sat out practice yesterday. Should we be worried?
Stephania Bell (12:15 PM)
Mark: Never like when a guy is added on Thursday but so far no indication from the Bears this is serious AND Bennett has missed his fair share of practices here and there but still played on Sunday. Imagine that it's a proactive rest.
Hi Starphania, I always appreciate the time you take to come to these chats. Give his persistent injuries this season, would you drop Steve Johnson for Rueben Randle or Aaron Dobson, if it was likely you'd have to start whomever you picked up?
Stephania Bell (12:17 PM)
Dan: And I appreciate those of you who come to the chat. I would drop Stevie. Just getting concerned about the injuries all in the same region (hip/back/groin) which have seemed to come one after the other. Not confident they really fully improve over the next few weeks and the bye is already past them. I prefer Randle but understand it could be feast or famine.
Stephania Bell (12:17 PM)
JW: Sorry, forgot that part. Think this is part of the rest him rather than overwork him regimen. Expect as of now that he plays.
Didn't we learn anything last week from Andre Brown? Guy broke his leg and first game back he touches the ball 30 times... If Harvin is suiting up I expect normal production.
Stephania Bell (12:22 PM)
John: They're not at all the same. Andre Brown didn't need as much time off as he got b/c of the IR/des for return status. He was practicing for 3 weeks before he returned and he didn't have surgery. It was a small crack on a bone he had surgery on the year prior so it was more cautionary than anything. I always felt he was ready to go but the Giants run game has been all over the map with injuries. They tested him early, liked what they saw and went with it.Harvin on the other hand had major surgery, including resurfacing of the bones in the hip. It is a huge recovery process which relies on strengthening and coordination of all the muscles of the hip and core. He had a reaction to too much work in practice the first week which was a warning. If they push it too much in his first game in a year, it could happen again. Sure, they could ignore it and make me look silly. But I would hope that they will be smart about this - and I think they will - because they have already given up this much time without him out there to wait for the payoff of the end of the season. Why risk it?
keith (san bndo)
What is the outlook on aaron rodgers playing again this year, and how effective?
Stephania Bell (12:25 PM)
keith: Definitely think he will and being Rodgers, I think he'll be effective out of the gate. He obviously has to rest from throwing early on due to pain and them not wanting him to move the bone as it heals. But it's his non-throwing arm and once he's cleared to throw he'll get his rhythm back quickly. The biggest risk is the contact from hits, especailly if taken down to the ground. That might demand a little additional time but there's a chance he's back by Thanksgiving.
Charlie (University of Utah)
Great visit a few years ago! Also come back sometime your always welcome. My question is would you consider trading Zac Stacy for the Seahawks Def if your own Moreno, Gore, A. Morris? Might be a bit crazy but trying to put together the best roster for the playoffs. I should make it. Thanks and great work!
Stephania Bell (12:26 PM)
Charlie: Thanks so much! I would not make that trade. Love the Seahawks D but running backs are at a premium and everyone - especially at that position -has a chance to get hurt. Would rather take a lesser D and stack up the RB depth.
Ray (East Bay)
Hey Stephania! How about a little IDP love?! What is Paul Posluszny's status?
Stephania Bell (12:29 PM)
Ray: Hasn't been cleared to play yet. Would have to be in practice Friday to have a shot. Not looking great.
Hi Stephania, any update on Vincent Jackson's status for Sunday? I read that he was limited a few days ago
Stephania Bell (12:30 PM)
Dustin: He was but keep in mind it's a short week for them with the Monday night game. He was upgraded yesterday so expect him to be out there.
Stephania Bell (12:32 PM)
Have to jump out of the chat but for all those asking about starting a bad-ankle Manning vs Chiefs or (insert any other QB here), I would still go with Manning. He is who he is. It may not be his 7 TD game but he's going to be the best thing the Chiefs have faced in weeks.Best of luck in Week 11!
