Nick Friedell (1:01 PM)
What's going on everybody? Let's get the chat rolling ...
Based off of yesterday, Rose saying he could be back for playoffs and the Bulls 20 point win over Miami, are we more likely to see no trades at all?
Nick Friedell (1:04 PM)
I don't think Rose is coming back this year no matter how far the Bulls go. Gar Forman already said that in his comments last week. I know what Derrick said but he just doesn't like to let people down. Trades are still probable, but I don't think the Bulls are going to blow up this core completely either.
Candy (Slippery Rock)
Hi Nick, how much longer will Jimmy be out and will he start over Snell when he comes back?
Nick Friedell (1:07 PM)
Candy, Thibs said last night that Butler still hadn't practiced and was 'week to week' -- it doesn't sound like he's coming back in the next couple days. As for the starting part, it's going to be interesting to see what Thibs decides to do. Snell has performed well with the starters and Butler has played well with Gibson off the bench before. We'll see what happens.
Chad Singler (Chicago Illinois)
Is It possible that Nikola Mirotic comes over 2014//2015?
Nick Friedell (1:08 PM)
The Bulls hope so. They hope he will come over this summer. It all depends on how the negotiations go to get him out of his contract.
Brandon Lane (Mattoon, IL)
Does Rose announcing he may possibly return for the playoffs increase the chances of Deng finishing the season a Bull?
Nick Friedell (1:11 PM)
Rose's words will have no impact on what the front office decides to do. The problem for the Bulls is that there isn't much of a market for Deng given how big the final year of his contract is. There aren't a lot of teams willing to absorb that kind of deal and there definitely aren't teams willing to give up a first round pick to get him. What compounds the problem is that Deng could walk at the end of the year. It's a very tricky situation for the front office.
Jack (Chicago )
What's the front office's long-term strategy? Do they think they can build a championship team around Rose, or that Rose will be a cog in a championship team built around a different player?
Nick Friedell (1:13 PM)
They have to build around Rose because he still has three years with max money remaining on his current deal. They have no choice but to hope that Rose comes back as the same player. They have always hoped to pair Rose with another star but the problem for them is that with all the money still on their books, they don't have enough space right now to go out and sign another star.
Eastern NC (Eastern NC)
Is Tony Snell playing his way into the equation, much like Jimmy Buckets did?
Nick Friedell (1:15 PM)
Absolutely. The Bulls love his work ethic and believe he is only going to get better. The key for Snell is to continue to play with the confidence he has shown up to this point.
Josh (Deerfield, IL)
Will boozer be amnestied? I've heard he may not be per request of jerry reinsdorf. Also will Noah be back once his contract is up? I just think he is on the decline and Thib's overplaying him last year in the playoffs only sped up the process because there is something seriously wrong with Noah this year in my mind.
Nick Friedell (1:18 PM)
Everything changes now because of Rose's injury. It used to seem like a slam dunk that Boozer would be amnestied, but now I think the odds are greater that he plays out the final year of his deal. As for Noah, I don't think anything is wrong with him physically. I think his biggest problem once Rose went down was that he couldn't get over that his friend, and the Bulls' best player, had gotten hurt again. It was tough for him to work as hard knowing the Bulls' championship aspirations went down when Rose got hurt. Maybe he can get back on track now after the Heat game.
Mr. Friedell,Isn't there a good chance the Bulls become way stronger next year? With their own 2014 1st rd pick, possibly the Charlotte pick, whatever they could get for Deng (Waiters? another 1st rd pick), possibly Mirotic coming over, and trading/amnestying Boozer to save money for raises/bench players, the Bulls could do a big revamp pretty quickly couldn't they?
Nick Friedell (1:20 PM)
Here's the problem with all that -- they are still built around Rose. The Bulls can have all the pieces they want but if Rose can't stay healthy then none of it matters. Rose is the star -- he's the straw that stirs the drink for this team -- if he can't stay on the floor then the Bulls will never get to where they want to go.
Derrick (Garden City)
Should Teague stay with the big club or head to the NBDL?
Nick Friedell (1:25 PM)
Teague should go down to the D-League when James gets healthy and try to get his confidence back. He played a little better last night but he is still really struggling.
I am not a tanking supporter, in fact I think this team has is more talent than last years with Snell and Taj improvement especially; however, I don't get why Mike James should ever play over Teague, maybe it wins us one more game in the regular season but Teague obviously has talent and he is still and 20 yr old. I get that Thibs just wants to play whoever will give the Bulls the best chance to win, but doesn't giving Teague playing time hoping he figures some of it out the best case scenario for the Bulls THIS season...
Nick Friedell (1:31 PM)
First of all, this year's team is not as deep as last year's. There was more talent last year. As for Teague, once a player lands in Thibs' doghouse it's hard for them to get out. I think Teague has lost a lot of confidence and he would be best served to go to the D-League for a while and see if he can get that confidence back.
Paul (Atlanta, Ga)
I'm getting tired of people saying the Bulls play better without Rose. But last night kind of had me thinking. Am I crazy for even thinking we better with D. Rose gone?
Nick Friedell (1:33 PM)
Paul, go watch some old YouTube clips of Derrick and then take a deep breath. Anybody who thinks the Bulls are better without Rose is nuts.
With Derrick saying that he might return for playoffs, does that mean the Bulls won't be trading anyone?
Nick Friedell (1:37 PM)
Absolutely not. The Bulls will still be looking to make some deals. As always, it all depends on what other teams are offering.
Paul (Atlanta, Ga)
Do you think Dunleavey is working out the way the Bulls thought he was?
Nick Friedell (1:39 PM)
Yes. He struggled over the first couple weeks but I think he has found a rhythm and looks much more comfortable on the floor. He is going to draw a lot of interest from other teams around the league because his contract is cheap and he has another year left on his deal.
Nick Friedell (1:42 PM)
I'm out of here everybody. If you're at a game come down and say hello. I'll talk to you guys next week.
