Nick Friedell (1:01 PM)
What's going on everybody? Greetings from Indy. I hope it's warmer wherever you are. Let's get this chat rolling ...
Greg M (Chicago, IL)
How's Noah's recovery coming? The only positive i see from the injury is that at least his feet are getting more time to heal from the plantar faciatis from last year
Nick Friedell (1:02 PM)
Noah got his cast off last week and appears to be doing fine. He's in good spirits and has already started working out again. He's still probably at least another month away from returning, though.
Why have the Bulls been playing so sluggish in the last week or so? Is it simply because Noah is out or is their a greater problem with the team?
Nick Friedell (1:05 PM)
Luol Deng was saying the other night that complacency may have set in a little with this team at the moment. His point was that they have been so good early on that it seems like they aren't playing as consistently hard as they did earlier in the year. I think the Bulls will bounce back soon enough. Thibs won't allow them to coast. They'll be fine once Noah comes back. Problem is, I still don't think they can beat, Orlando, Miami or Boston in a seven game series this year.
Greg M (Chicago, IL)
What kind of value do Bogans and James Johnson have on the trade market? Could they bring us back a serviceable SG of SF?
Nick Friedell (1:05 PM)
This can't be a real question.
Derrick (Garden City)
Greetings Nick, are there any concerns about Rose breaking down? It seems like his style, his minutes, and his USA team participation might lead to him breaking down .
Nick Friedell (1:07 PM)
Not at the moment. Rose is still just 22 and his body is holding up fine. I know management isn't concerned about him breaking down right now, but they will definitely keep a close eye on his in the future.
Cameron (Galesburg, IL)
On his current trajectory is Boozer a hall of famer?
Nick Friedell (1:07 PM)
No, I don't think so. What do you guys think?
Jason (Libertyville, il)
Happy Friday Nick! Do you think Tibs coaching has cost the Bulls in atleast 3-4 wins so far this year? I'm not saying he's bad, I'm just saying acouple games they could of won. Off my head the New Jersey, Knicks(Earlier this year before they faced the Celts), and now the Charlotte game. Leaving Boozer and Rose on the bench, letting Taj get 3 quick fouls the other day and leaving Deng in too long for a bunch of games.
Nick Friedell (1:10 PM)
Thibs is a first year and coach and has definitely made a few mistakes here and there, but I think for the most part he has done a very good job. You can point out various different decisions you may not agree with, but the only one I had a major issue with was the decision to bring John Lucas III back into that game in Denver. I wouldn't have put him in that situation, but Thibs thought he could make the shot.
Hyde Park Dave (DC)
I think the Bulls can get to the Finals if JoNoah gets back healthy AND we get a productive SG (NOT NAMED KEITH BOGUS!!). Are the Bulls gonna wait until the offseason or maybe try to used Taj and a pick to get that impact player(Rip, OJ, JR Smith, SJax)?
Nick Friedell (1:12 PM)
Slivy, is this you? Look, we go over this question every week. I think the Bulls are exploring every option when it comes to bringing in a shooting guard, but I know they don't want to overpay for anyone. They also don't want to give up Taj or Omer if they can help it. They know they need to upgrade the position, but they won't do it at the deadline just to make a deal. I think they'd rather wait til the summer, see what happens with the lockout situation, and then go from there.
why dont the bulls trade for stephen jackson or mayo already? god we know and the whole organization knows we need a shooting guard no offense but bogans is a waste of space on the court it's literally 4v5 basketball when's he's there jackson and majo can shoot and play off rose and make it a whole lot easier for the tandem of rose and boozer what do you think Nick?
Nick Friedell (1:15 PM)
Jackson still has two years and over $20 million left on his deal. He's also about to be 33. What does Memphis want that the Bulls have for Mayo? Taj and the Charlotte first round pick probably wouldn't be enough. Even if you got Mayo, then you would have to give him big money to keep him. I don't think either one of those deals is going to happen ... but you never know.
Sea Bass (Saskatoon, SK)
Hello, is the two guard spot holding the Bulls back from being a top tier team?
Nick Friedell (1:17 PM)
It is for now. But again, no matter who the Bulls picked up this year, I don't think they could beat Boston, Miami or Orlando right now. Even if they somehow picked up Melo I think they'd have to add another complimentary piece or two in the off-season.
How do you see the development of james johnson i know he gets very little playing time but i want to know is he developed since last year at least a little bit
Nick Friedell (1:18 PM)
It doesn't look like it. Thibs clearly doesn't trust him on the floor. Johnson is still extremely athletic, but that hasn't translated well to the games yet.
Do you think Brian Scalabrine will finally get the respect he deserves and make the all star team?
Nick Friedell (1:18 PM)
Now there's a question.
Yo Adrian (Lake Zurich)
DENGS MINUTES ARE RACKING UP! His offense has stayed pretty consistant (read:average!) but his intangibles are really pleasing Thibs. Doesn't he know Deng can break easily? And chance Thibs allows Luol to get into an offensive groove the way he relys on his defense?
Nick Friedell (1:20 PM)
I am surprised Thibs has played Deng so much early on this year, but he has faith that his body will hold up. Only time will tell. But if history tells us anything, the Bulls should be really cautious about Deng's minutes over the next few months.
The Bulls have learned they can win. As stated in an earlier post, they have been playing with complacency. Once they get past this "phase," if you will, do you think this team has it in itself to play with more of a killer instinct? We've had a few years with decent success since the Jordan days, but what we haven't seen since the MJ days is a team with killer instinct.
Nick Friedell (1:21 PM)
Al, I think Rose is developing that killer instinct on a nightly basis. The Bulls don't have it now, but they will in a few years once Rose learns more about closing out games.
So I scored some courtside seats for the game tonight I'm pretty pumped about! First time in Conseco Fieldhouse and I was wondering, where does the UC rank among best stadiums to watch a game around the league?
Nick Friedell (1:23 PM)
The UC is in the middle. Not the best, not the worst. The place is always packed which is awesome, but it is way too quiet in there most of the time. When it's loud, and the fans are into it, it's a fun place to watch a game.
Does Carlos Boozer not want to play defense or is he just not very good at it?
Nick Friedell (1:24 PM)
Probably more of the latter. His effort isn't always there defensively, but to say he doesn't try would be wrong. He just has never been a great defender. The Bulls knew that when they signed him.
Why, in your opinion, can't the Bulls beat the likes of Miami, Boston, and Orlando?
Nick Friedell (1:26 PM)
There's more talent on all of those teams. Howard dominates the Bulls. Garnett, Pierce and Allen give them trouble. And, like most teams in the league, the Bulls have no answer for LeBron/Wade. That's why.
Can the Bulls rebound and beat the Pacers or are they looking ahead at the big game saturday night at UC?
Nick Friedell (1:27 PM)
Having talked to the guys at shootaround, I don't think they are looking ahead. But, I'm still not sure if they'll win tonight. They have played poorly on the road for two weeks straight now. The energy hasn't been there to start games, although Rose says it will be later tonight. We'll see.
posted a question b4 the chat. and again. would it be feasable to try to get Kirk back from Washington? He's a strong defender and a decent offensive player.
Nick Friedell (1:28 PM)
The Bulls would love to have Kirk back, but not for $8 mil a year. I think he'll sign here after his current deal runs out.
Colin (New Jersey)
What's going on with Kyle Korver? It seems as if he getting less and less playing time. Do you think he'll be gone by the trade deadline?
Nick Friedell (1:30 PM)
I don't think he's going anywhere. But he is definitely struggling. Everyone knew Korver was a streaky shooter -- and he's been exactly that over the first three months of the season. The reason his playing time seems to have dipped is because his defense still isn't up to Thibs' standards right now.
What are the chances of luring Michael Jordan out of retirement to fill the void at the 2? At age 47 (almost 48), I'm sure he could put up better numbers than our current starter. Obviously, this is not a serious question.
Nick Friedell (1:31 PM)
Silvy, aren't you hosting a show right now?
Nick how long do you think before Bulls are championship contenders?
Nick Friedell (1:34 PM)
I think they could be next year if they find the right two guard to play alongside Rose. Who that is, I'm not sure at the moment. But if they added another piece or two in the summer they will be right there.
Demareo (Woodstock, IL)
Do you think Deng will continue to be a reliable scoring option as the season progresses or will he continue to be a hot and cold player?
Nick Friedell (1:34 PM)
Deng has been pretty hot and cold almost his entire career. Especially over the last few years. I don't think that is going to change now.
Why didn't Brad Miller re-sign? Did we not want him?
Nick Friedell (1:35 PM)
The Bulls wanted him. They just didn't want to sign him for $15 mil.
How do you feel about starting Korver in the 2 instead of the bald guy? The Bulls seem to have a lot of trouble spreading the floor early in the game and opponents can just key in on Booz and Rose. They can't really start out much worse than they have recently.
Nick Friedell (1:36 PM)
I like the idea. Korver would get a lot more open looks to start the game and would space the floor. Thibs clearly likes having Brewer come off the bench. The problem is that the opposing team would go right at Korver defensively. That is not the way Thibs wants to start the game.
Big Fan (ChiTown)
Why is Brewer not considered a solid 2 guard? With Bogans coming from the bench, I think that would work better.
Nick Friedell (1:38 PM)
I think the coaching staff is very happy with Brewer's progress. The only major problem with his game is that he can't knock down threes. But again, the Bulls knew that when they signed him.
Justin (CC Hills)
Why are the Bulls afraid to pay big money for a 2 guard ? Don't they know all of the true title contenders are over the salry cap(Lakers,Boston,Orlando,Miami). The guys who dont spend exit in the first round .
Nick Friedell (1:39 PM)
I don't think the Bulls are afraid to spend money on a two guard, I just don't think they want to overpay for one at the moment. They want to hold open that cap space until they know they can get the right player on the roster.
Taj has been a dissapointment over the past month, he is in a bit of a sophomore slump. He can't seem to find his offense at all. Also seems he is forcing some shots. Is he having trouble adjusting to a bench role?
Nick Friedell (1:41 PM)
I just think Taj has lost a little confidence. He had that concussion last month and hasn't quite been the same. He had a couple of good games and then hasn't played great since. He's too hard of a worker to be lost for long, though.
Wouldn't it be smarter for the Bulls to ride this season out with the current roster and then on the other side of the lockout (with much more certainty about the cap) be more aggressive in free agency? There's going to be SGs like JRich, JCrawford, JR Smith, Arron Aflalo available for a fraction of what they woulf have cost this year?
Nick Friedell (1:43 PM)
That's what their plan is at the moment. Wait until after the lockout and see what happens if the prices are too high on the trade market right now.
Abe Frohman, Sausage King of (Chicago)
Nick; got any insight into the Bulls' thoughts about Omer Asik? How he's coming along, what they expect from his this year? ...next?
Nick Friedell (1:44 PM)
Nice name, Abe. The Bulls like Asik. They think he is coming along just fine. Once he hits the weight room, gets in better shape and learns more about the game, the team thinks he will be a solid backup center ... and he'll be an even bigger trade chip.
Are you going to Dwayne Wade's birthday party tonight?
Nick Friedell (1:45 PM)
Nope, but I think ESPNChicago.com's very own Jon Greenberg is.
Rene (Sweet Home Chicago)
Do you think an injured Noah will still be picked for the All-Star team simply because decent centers in the east are are few & far between?
Nick Friedell (1:46 PM)
Nope. If he had stayed healthy, Noah would have been on the team. Not now. Al Horford and Dwight Howard will make it.
I know you have to appear objective, but why wouldn't this team have a shot at beating Orl, Bos, or Mia? #1 in def. efficiency, 20 pt. low post presence and one unstoppable guy. I mean, not saying they would win, but how could they not have a 50/50 shot?
Nick Friedell (1:48 PM)
I just don't think the Bulls have the talent right now to win four games off of any of those teams. We can agree to disagree. Maybe in a year or two, but not this year.
Do you think i have a better chance of starting over Bogans? Im 32yrs old 5"10 white guy that hasnt played basketball in 10yrs, but i played at the YMCA in High School
Nick Friedell (1:50 PM)
Wow. Does anyone out there like Bogans at all? Even a little bit?I'm not saying he's great by any stretch, but people are just shredding this guy lately. No, I don't think he should be in the starting lineup, but still ...
Hey nick can you do us all a favor and ask thibs to put you at the starting 2 spot?!?!
Nick Friedell (1:51 PM)
HA. I can set a mean pick.
Hey Nick, Harry. Can you please explain why Kurt Thomas always looks so angry?
Nick Friedell (1:54 PM)
Kurt may look angry, but he's actually one of the nicest guys on the team. If you had lasted this long in the NBA you would be too.
people in Detroit said that D-Rose may be better that Isiah Thomas...Do you believe that?
Nick Friedell (1:55 PM)
I will once Derrick wins a ring or two.
Kenny (Jefferson Park)
Nick, you seem like you would be a beast on the floor. Tell Thibs to put you at the 5 spot and do work on D Howard!
Nick Friedell (1:56 PM)
HAHA! Duly noted. People were always afraid of me on the court, but that's probably just because I had a hard time keeping my balance and used to knock everyone over.
Nick Friedell (1:57 PM)
All right, everybody. I am out of here. I will talk to you guys next week. If you get to the Heat game tomorrow come over and say hello. Talk to everybody later.
