Jeff Dickerson (1:11 PM)
Wanted to start a little early because the Bears are likely to wrap up practice before 1 p.m. Time for your questions....
Manuel from Monterrey Mexico [via mobile]
Hi , Devin Hester is no longer a good returner, teams aren't afraid of him anymore , why don't give the opurtunity to Michael Ford?
Jeff Dickerson (1:14 PM)
Manuel, The Bears are paying Hester over $2.1 million to return kicks. What else would he do?
JD, they way the Redskins have played this season, should the Shanahans be concerned about his job secuirty. At times last night it appeared that RGIII has looking at the side-line in digust. Thanks
Jeff Dickerson (1:16 PM)
I can't really say for sure, but if the Skins don't make the playoffs this year that would be three times in four years under Shanny. That normally doesn't earn you a 5th season in the NFL as a head coach.
How about the bears hiring Uhrlacer to teach Bostic how to play?
Jeff Dickerson (1:18 PM)
I think Urlacher is happy making the money he is making on Fox TV. Don't think he would be interested in helping the Bears out.
Have the Bears considered trying out Corneluis Washington inside at defensive tackle to see if he can provide any pass rush?
Jeff Dickerson (1:20 PM)
Ed, Washington was a 3-4 outside linebacker in college. Playing him at defensive end in a 4-3 defense is a huge adjustment for the rookie in its own right. Playing him inside probably isn't an option. Washington is very talented, but is still trying to master his technique at defensive end. Asking him to learn DT would be a tall order.
If the Defense turns over as drastically as expected, likelihood of moving to a 3-4?
Jeff Dickerson (1:21 PM)
It's possible. But we have to wait and see how many of these veterans are re-signed. Can't run a 3-4 defense without the proper personnel. And right now, the Bears' personnel is built for a 4-3.
Jay (Charlotte) [via mobile]
With a sharp decrease in production and an elevated cap hit over the next 2 years, what are the chances Julius Peppers gets cut after this season?
Jeff Dickerson (1:23 PM)
Julius Peppers' current cap number in 2014 is $18,183,333. At the rate he is going, I can't see the Bears keeping him on the roster beyond this season unless his production picks up.
Is there any chance at all of bringing Lovie Smith back as the defensive coordinator?
Jeff Dickerson (1:24 PM)
Ha. No. Lovie Smith will likely be coaching someplace in the NFL next year, but it won't be Chicago.
Who would you consider more of a threat to the Bears, the Packers or the Lions?
Jeff Dickerson (1:25 PM)
Packers. Bears have not been able to beat them in the Jay Cutler era. Until the Bears knock off Green Bay, I have a hard time seeing them winning the NFC North.
Cesar Cortez (California)
Hi Jeffi am really discouraged in the lack of development of shea mcclellin. I know it's still early in his career but I would not like to see another first round bust. I see him get tied and handled by OL and even TE constantly. Apart from learning technique and counter moves to play DE, Do you think it will be a priority next offseason to get stronger by adding more to his frame or is he physically maxed out? He does look a little stronger this season compared to last year but he still looks a bit undersized to play in the trenches. Thanks Jeff.
Jeff Dickerson (1:27 PM)
McClellin tried to gain weight in the offseason and it didn't work. He just isn't built to be a defensive end in a 4-3 defense, in my opinion. Bears need to get creative with him up front. But injuries on the DL make it more difficult to move him around.
Andy (New York)
Give us hope... With all the injuries, new coaching, etc., do you see any realistic chance of improvement in the defense that allows the Bears to get into the playoffs?
Jeff Dickerson (1:27 PM)
Sure. Bears can win 9 or 10 games and make the playoffs, despite the average defense.
Jeff Dickerson (1:28 PM)
Sorry. Bears have ended practice 25 minutes early! Need to run outside and talk to players and coaches. We'll do this for the normal time next week. Enjoy the rest of your day.
