Tim MacMahon (4:02 PM)
Thanks for joining me. We've got a lot of talk about with a 2-2 Finals that seems destined to go seven.
Do you think Carlisle will shake it up and start Terry?
Tim MacMahon (4:02 PM)
No. The shakeup has already happened. They'll stick with JJ Barea in the starting lineup and bring DeShawn Stevenson off the bench at small forward. Jason Terry will continue to be the sixth man.
I'm starting to believe Jason Terry about the whole "Lebron can't last in a 7 game series" thing. They're playing him way too much. What do you think?
Tim MacMahon (4:03 PM)
There might be something to that. LeBron hasn't rested in the second half of a game yet this series. They're asking him to play more than 40 minutes and finish games by chasing a quick guard through a maze of screens. That's asking a lot.
Surely - SURELY - there is one of the "typical western conference Mavs offense" games left, right? Can we just break 100 once? I'm sensing a redux of the Game 4 LA series where we win by 35.
Tim MacMahon (4:05 PM)
Don't hold your breath. That was a no-show by the Lakers. I don't see the Heat mailing it in. Miami is a dominant defensive team. The Mavs will have to grind out two more wins.
Tim- before the first round alot of people were saying if the Mavs go out early they will probley look to trade Jason terry you still see that happening?
Tim MacMahon (4:07 PM)
I don't think the Mavs will shop Jason Terry now. They'll try to re-sign Tyson Chandler, J.J. Barea, Caron Butler and maybe DeShawn Stevenson and make another run. Not sure if they'll be able to keep all three guys, considering the uncertainty of the CBA situation. Chandler is the clear priority of the free agents.
Do you think Terry can keep up this kind of 4th quarter production, or is this a one game performance?
Tim MacMahon (4:07 PM)
He'll probably continue to be hit and miss in fourth quarters. Terry's fourth quarter scoring this series: 0, 8, 0, 8. Guess which games the Mavs won?
I was very disappointed when LeBron faked a push and the refs called it a foul and how Wade faked a push under the basket on a rebound in a previous game. Interesting that the best team and best players in the NBA have to resort to this tactics.
Tim MacMahon (4:08 PM)
But you probably don't mind when JJ Barea flops, right? Like it or not, that's part of the NBA.
Preston (Colorado Springs)
Do you think D-Steve's clutch 2nd quarter was a response to being benched by Carlisle?
Tim MacMahon (4:10 PM)
I don't buy that it was a response to anything. DeShawn Stevenson is heavily tattooed and talks a lot of trash, but he's a true pro. He doesn't care what his role is. He'll do whatever is asked of him. He proved that by getting yanked from the end of the bench to the starting lineup back to the end of the bench and back to the starting lineup this season and producing when he got the chances. Game 4 was a continuation of Stevenson adapting to his role and making the best of it.
barea hasnt given the mavs much production in the finals.what are the chances carlisle gives roddy b a chance over jj?
Tim MacMahon (4:11 PM)
I hope you're kidding. Roddy B wasn't ready to be counted on during the regular season. They're not going to suddenly rely on him with the series tied in the Finals.
Do you think we will see Peja anymore with real time in the finals? Do the mavs try to resign him for next year?
Tim MacMahon (4:13 PM)
I think we've probably seen the last of Peja's significant minutes as a Maverick. The Heat are just too athletic for him to match up in this series. Maybe he'll be back for the minimum salary again, but I'd bet on seeing Corey Brewer get those minutes next season.
Hi Tim, as good as Miami's defense has been, Dallas has been getting a tremendous number of open shots. Am I crazy to think that Dallas can/should be winning some of these games going away if they just knock down some open shots?
Tim MacMahon (4:15 PM)
Well, I know Jason Terry has similar thoughts.
How's Dirk doing?
Tim MacMahon (4:16 PM)
Dirk is doing better. He said the fever is pretty much gone. They had a very light practice today. He'll get a lot of rest, get in a 30-minute workout tonight and be ready to roll for Game 5.
Mavs Fan #1 (Dallas)
If Butler was activated for game 5 (even if he does not get in the game), would'nt that at least make the Heat think real hard about the game plan?
Tim MacMahon (4:17 PM)
I don't think the Heat will be worried about a guy who hasn't played since New Year's Day. And Butler hasn't been cleared for contact. He isn't going to play. If he's activated, it would be purely a motivational tactic, and I haven't heard any buzz about that as a possibility.
Joe V (Denver)
Would Lebron be doing the Mavs a favor by trying to get more involved...and taking touches away from Wade?
Tim MacMahon (4:18 PM)
LeBron is the most talented player in the NBA. He needs to be aggressive. He's doing the Mavs a favor if he continues to stand in the corner and watch Dwyane Wade work.
When do you think Brendan Haywood will come back? The Mavs really need him for rebounding.
Tim MacMahon (4:19 PM)
He's officially day to day, but it's very questionable whether he'll be able to play again in this series. As he said last night, it's a 4-5 week injury and he's trying to come back in 4-5 days.
Is Chandler next on the long list of Mavs centers this millennium to shut it down after receiving a huge contract?
Tim MacMahon (4:20 PM)
I don't think so. That's not his character. He earned his money after getting a big contract in New Orleans until injuries ruined two seasons.
Eddie (Hoboken, NJ)
Is Stevenson basically begging Lebron to drop a monster triple double on the Mavs in game 5 with his comments? What's with all of his trash talk anyways?
Tim MacMahon (4:21 PM)
That's just the way Stevenson rolls. Same with Jason Terry. If they're gonna talk the talk, they better walk the walk. They did during Game 4. Now they've got to do it again.
Chris (Warsaw, Poland)
Are we going to see more zone by the Mavs?
Tim MacMahon (4:23 PM)
Don't know about that. The zone is effective as a changeup. The more the Mavs show of it, the more comfortable the Heat would get working against it. The element of surprise is key. Rick Carlisle used it perfectly in the fourth quarter of Game 4.
What is the chance of Brewer seeing some action? I would play him over Cardnal in a heart beat.
Tim MacMahon (4:24 PM)
You never know with Rick Carlisle. Brewer could be glued to the bench for the rest of the series. Or he could get some action and make a significant impact, like he did to spark the Game 1 comeback against the Lakers.
Ian Mahinmi time again?
Tim MacMahon (4:25 PM)
I think the Mavs will try to avoid it. Tyson Chandler is more important than ever to the Mavs now. They might need him to play 40-plus minutes the rest of the series. He has to continue to be aggressive but stay out of foul trouble.
Bobby (New York)
Is it just me or has JJ Barea been missing a lot pretty open/easy layups?
Tim MacMahon (4:26 PM)
Nope, it's not you. He missed two or three uncontested layups in Game 4. The strange thing is he made a couple of circus shots in the paint -- twisting and turning in traffic.
I understand that Miami is the national draw in this series, but most of what I am reading/hearing today is focusing on why the Heat lost instead of why the Mavs won. Why isn't the national media willing to admit that the Mavs were just better than the Heat last night? I didn't read any national articles after game 3 explaining why the Mavs lost - the focus was on why the Heat won.
Tim MacMahon (4:29 PM)
The Heat will get the bulk of the attention. It's been that way since The Decision went down. Miami is one of the most fascinating stories in NBA history. By the way, that's fine with most of the Mavs. They don't care about attention. They just want two more wins.
Did you and the other writers decide that "if Dallas fans complain about flops... bring up Barea"? I hate it when Barea flops a lot, but I hate it even more when "The Chosen One", "King James" and "The Greatest Basketball Player In The World" resorts to that. If you want to put JJ on an equal playing field with Lebron then be my guest. Should we start comparing Jordan with JJ? Give me a break and stop defending Lebron.
Tim MacMahon (4:30 PM)
Always good to hear from bitter Bulls fans. Don't get that often on ESPNDallas chats.
Tim MacMahon (4:30 PM)
Gotta wrap it up now, folks. Appreciate all the questions. Sorry I couldn't get to more of them.
