Ed (Queens Village)
Prime of there career Dirk or Duncan you want on team?
JJT (1:06 PM)
I haven't really thought about it. I'd probably go with Dirk just cause he doesn't whine about EVERY call and he's a more exciting player. After all, they call Duncan The Big Fundamental for a reason. Both great players and both Hall of Famers, but I like Dirk cause he changed the game. 7-Footers couldn't shoot threes before he arrived because coaches buried them on the blocks.
Rich (New Jersey)
Hi Jean-Jaques, Dallas lead through out most of the game because of team defense & the bench scoring, who'll have to step up in game 2 for the Mavericks so there is no repeat of previous game ?
JJT (1:07 PM)
They need Dirk and Monta to play well. Those guys combined to average 40 points a game. They scored 22, while making 8 of 28 shots. Not good enough against the team with the best record in basketball this season
Hi JJT, when Scheppers returns do you think he's headed to the bullpen?
JJT (1:08 PM)
I would think so. Yu, Perez, Ross, Lewis and Harrison with Joe Saunders ready to come off DL in a little while. Given the availability of those starters, he has more value in the bullpen than starting
Candy (Slippery Rock)
JJT, do you think Kouzmanoff has earned himself a job at the big leagues even when Beltre comes back?
JJT (1:09 PM)
You can't take his bat out of the lineup right now. He can give Beltre a break at 3B a couple of times a week and he can DH. Mitch Moreland might be the guy who sits on the bench when he returns
hello JJT, how is Neftali doing in the minors and do you think he still has a shot to close for the Rangers some time later this year?
JJT (1:12 PM)
Based on what we've seen thus far, I can't see him closing. Why would you take the job away from Soria, who has done it before. He could be a really nice piece, though,if he can re-discover his velocity and handle the 7th inning. Then Ogando and Cotts can shut down the eighth and give the ball to Soria.
Bryan (Springdale, AR)
I know the Spurs are the better team, no doubt. Which team, though, can stand to play better overall in Game 2?
JJT (1:13 PM)
They can each play a lot better. The Mavs didn't get much from their two best players Monta and Dirk and the Suprs received virtually nothing from their bench, which is unusual
R Lank, MD [via mobile]
Whats goin on man? i gotta tel u i liked our chances. up 10 with 7mins left n the 4th, it ours 4 taken just couldn't shots down the stretch. we had nice looks just couldn't hit. Lets move on. game 2 i say get Dirk nvolved early and same type of tough D along with good production from the bench and we can stil makit a series if not winnit. Win or lose we're not layn down 4 nobody. U HEARD IT HERE FIRST. CAN I PLEASE GET UR THOUGHTS ON GAME 1 AND THE WAY U THINK THE REST OF THE SERIES IS GOIN DOWN?
JJT (1:18 PM)
these were my thoughts on Game 1http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/id/10812221/nba-playoffs-dallas-mavericks-need-dirk-nowitzki-better-shot-vs-san-antonio-spursDirk will come out a lot more aggressive in Game 2, but it's a matter of hitting shots. He had a lot of looks he normally makes, but didn't. I assume he spent quite a bit of time in the gym at night the last couple of days getting his shot right.
JJT, I am forever grateful for Carlisle being the Mavs coach, but when will he realize the Mavs didn't win a title in 2011 by sitting Marion and Chandler in the 4th quarter. Now I know were not talking about the same Marion and Dalembert is a far cry, but still you win with defense, maybe those guys make some stops, maybe they get you an offensive rebound that results in 2nd chance pts, maybe they don't respect Marion's corner 3 or Dalembert cutting to the hole and you get basket's that way. I have seen too many games this year where crunch time is Carter and Wright and the results end up being the same.
JJT (1:21 PM)
Dalembert and Shawn Marion were each in the game in 1Q when Mavs were down 21-9. There are no guarantees the game would've been different if those guys were in the game. The Mavs needed some offense. The Spurs got rid of the lead in in 2:51, so it's doubtful those two guys would've stemmed the tide. Without Dirk and Monta scoring, the Mavs needed offense
Frank(dallas) [via mobile]
If the cowboys are looking for a new coach next year, who's the most proven coach you could see coming here? Brian Kelly?
JJT (1:24 PM)
Haven't thought about it. Can we finish this football season before we fire Garrett. If he does get fired, I can't see Brian Kelly getting the job. Notre Dame hasn't been special since he arrived. He's good coach, but I wouldn't say he's special
Carlisle has increased Dirk's minutes the last two games (MEM/SA), of course they have had more days off in between, but with an older Dirk, do you believe he should cont. to do as he did in the regular season and have Dirk get his rest during the games or is it too much of a liability with it being playoff time so Dirk just has to fight through the fatigue?
JJT (1:26 PM)
It's the playoffs. Your stars have to play. They can rest when the season is over.
Do you see the Stars winning this sereis? Being a lifelong football fan I'm becoming more of a hockey fan each year now that the NFL is so unbearable to watch these days. Hockey players are real men!
JJT (1:27 PM)
Stop with all the hockey players are real men. That's bunk. They're fantastic athletes, but they aren't any tougher than NFL players. This series is going 7. Matter of whether Seguin and Benn can do it in that game
Andy (Cologne, GER) [via mobile]
Which team has the better chance to make it to the 2nd round? Mavs or Stars?
JJT (1:28 PM)
Mo (Las Colinas)
Has Choo had his MRI yet? If so, results?
JJT (1:28 PM)
No results yet. High ankle sprain is always tricky. Not sure how it affects baseball players.
Bob(Waco) [via mobile]
What'd you think of steve edmonds comments?
JJT (1:29 PM)
Who is Steve Edmonds. If he's an anonymous Texas LB, then who cares.
Chris(Austin) [via mobile]
You think Baylor has a shot at the national title in football?
JJT (1:30 PM)
Nope. The Bears don't play any D. Ultimately, you gotta have some D to go with that lethal offense.
Paul D (New Haven, Ct)
Hey JJT look forward to this every week, coming up with the question is another issue. This weeks question, Between Romo and Bryant, Staubach and Pearson, and Aikman and Irvin which tandem was the most lethal if each Qb had similar support on the line, Rb, te etc. Go Cowboys, Mets, and Knicks
JJT (1:31 PM)
roger and drew. look at all the big plays they made at winning time
How about a TCU question: Does Joeckel transferring in give the frogs a chance in the Big 12?
JJT (1:32 PM)
No. If he was any good, he woulda beat out the guys competing for the starting job with the Aggies right now. Maybe, he's solid, but he;'s not going to be the difference between winning and losing a title for the Frogs.
Feels like the Mavs gave away a golden opportunity at a win. Can they recover from this? Can they even win a game in this series?
JJT (1:32 PM)
They'll win a game. I don't know if they'll win two. Right now, i'd say no.
Gio (Dallas) [via mobile]
What were your thoughts of mavs in game 1? Do you think they can pull an upset if defense stays strong and offense starts showing up in 4th quarter. If not, what do they need to do to win?
JJT (1:33 PM)
Mavs aren't gong to beat the Spurs. Best they can do is push it 6 games.
John A (Dallas)
Will Selvie have as good or possibly better season than 2013?
JJT (1:35 PM)
Sorry, but I have no idea. No one does. He'd never been anything more than just a guy until last season. If you can get what you got from his last year, I'd take that. This is interesting to season to see if he can take the next step in his development
shannon gray (kentucky)
with the prospects of Donald being gone at 16, my desire would be to trade down (if possible), pick up picks such as: kony Ealy DE late round one, Lamarcus Joyner (2), Morgan Moses OT and Will sutton DT (3), Kareem Martin DE (4) Dakota Dozier (5), Trade up in round six for Paul Richardson, and then let the scout team do the rest in seven. Thoughts?
JJT (1:36 PM)
that's way to hypothetical for me. What if Donald is there. What if the guys you want are gone. Trade up in round 6? Who the heck knows who is available in Round 6. I respect your passion, but you can't rush the process,. Let's see who's there when DC pick and whether their choice makes sense. That's all I ask.
Moe [via mobile]
If available at 16 should the Cowboys take Johny Manziel?
JJT (1:37 PM)
no!!! Here's my column on that topichttp://espn.go.com/dallas/nfl/story/_/id/10750541/dallas-cowboys-fans-trust-tony-romo-johnny-manziel-not-coming-rescue
Mark (Corpus Christi) [via mobile]
What does Dallas have to adjust to their game plan to win game 2?
JJT (1:38 PM)
Dirk and Monta have to make shots. They gotta keep Parker out of the lane
NIGEL (SALT LAKT CITY UTAH)
Your prediction in the mavs spurs series is what
JJT (1:39 PM)
the same as it was when the series began: Spurs in 5
Terence Watson (Ashburn, VA)
Good Afternoon JJT, Have you heard anything about Orton reporting to workouts today? Also what do you believe the chances are the Cowboys take a QB in the 5th or 6th rounds?
JJT (1:41 PM)
the only thing that would make the Cowboys take Johnny Football - if he somehow fell - is if Orton didn't play and retired as he contemplated early in the offseason. The flip side is that the Cowboys could've told him take the time off we don't need you here. Do the mandatory minicamp and we'll see you at training camp with a good mind and a good spirit.
JJT (1:41 PM)
That's a big deal though. They need a quality backup quarterback and they're not going to find one in the 5th or 6th round
Casey Z (firstname.lastname@example.org)
Donald ,Jerrigan, Pryor,Dix , Thoughts on 1st pick and Will the cowboys trade #24 if his play doesnt improve. Thanks
JJT (1:41 PM)
who wants him? He's worth more to you than another team
Fantastic 41 [via mobile]
JJT now that we know the increase in salary cap in the NBA is headed our way next year, once we get Dirk ready to sign his new contract, who do you see being a target for us this summer? By "target" I mean "realistic target"
JJT (1:42 PM)
I haven't thought about it. Let's finish this season first. Lance Stephenson is a name, but why wouldn't the Pacers re-sign him.
Jon(dallas) [via mobile]
Do you think the 2007 season would have ended differently if Parcells had stayed?
JJT (1:44 PM)
Parcells or Sparano. That team needed some leadership from the top and Wade was so happy to be there he didn't give them any. If he had, he would of nixed the Cabo trip. The players were burnt out on Parcells. Sparano would've been nice fit, to me, because he would've maintained the structure without driving players crazy
David Petrey (Wash DC)
Who've you got in the Derby?
JJT (1:45 PM)
I don't care about horse racing. I hear the mint juleps are fantastic.
Joe (the moon)
what do you think of the Stars' play so far in the series? Do you think that a strong showing/winning against the Ducks will help boost the fan base in Dallas again?
JJT (1:46 PM)
wining brings fans in every sport. Especially in Dallas because we are a front-runner city
enrique dallas [via mobile]
With all the injuries the rangers have had...do you like where they are at this point. And do you see things getting better when our players come back from off dl
JJT (1:48 PM)
They're playing well. And they're doing all the little things good teams do. 17 games and they've had 2 that were not well played. I don't even count the 16-2 loss to Chicago as not well-played. They didn't make a bunch of errors in that game they pitchers were just bad. They weren't sloppy is the point. If they can get rotation straightened out they will be dangerous
Fantastic 41 (Houston, Tx) [via mobile]
I am in need of some baseball info from here in baseball purgatory (Houston)! How far away from the majors is the Rangers fabulous catching prospect? Is that why they didn't splash in the offseason with a catcher?
JJT (1:52 PM)
Jorge Alfaro is still probably 3 years away. He's playing High A ball this year. He's not even at double-A yet. But that is why they didn't want to spend a ton for a catcher in the offseason
Yan (Pyongyang, NK) [via mobile]
What do you think about the Prince Fielder trade 20 games into the season?
JJT (1:52 PM)
it makes no sense to have any judgement about a trade 20 games into the season. Obviously, he's not hitting the way you want. But you can't bring a football mentality to baseball.
Eddie Hazel (Plainfield, NJ)
JJT,Which one of Brandon Carr, Morris Claiborne or Orlando Scandrick will not return to the Cowboys in 2015 if you had to make a prediction right now?
JJT (1:53 PM)
I don't understand. Can we play this season first before we start talking about the 2014 offseason
Cain (Berwyn Il )
Did you read the article on d ware about difference between the broncos training to the cowboys with the broncos using sleds.Could this be a factor with the hamstrings problems with the boys?
JJT (1:54 PM)
blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. All he's ever known is the Cowboys so wherever he went it would likely by completely different. I left the Dallas Morning News after 20 years, so everything at ESPN was new different. It didn't make it better or worse - just different
Jordan (McKinney )
Sparano was on the team in 2007
JJT (1:56 PM)
I guess I didn't say it right. If Sparano was the HC not the OL and run game coordinator it would've made a difference. As an assistant, your job is to support the HC whether you agree with what he's doing or not - not do your owns thing. That's why it would've been different if Sparano was in charge
As a journalist, I would imagine it's tough sometimes to be honest about athletes that you may like or admire. What's the harshest thing you've ever written about an athlete (or manager/coach, owner, etc...) that you admired or liked personally? How did he react?
JJT (1:58 PM)
it's really not. You tell the truth and make yourself accountable by doing the work, going to practices, having conversations with coaches, players and agents so you know what you're talking about. You should've seen the column I wrote about Ron Washington after his cocaine incident. He took it like a man cause he knew made a mistake and we talked about it before I wrote it.
Bryan (Springdale, AR)
I hate saying it, but I don't think Carmelo is the answer for this team. The Mavs would be better off spending that money on a solid Center and a good wing player to replace Marion. I'm trying to be a realist JJT. Plus, now that the cap is going up by $5 million, I'm sure Carmelo thinks "now that the cap is going up, I definitely know that I am worth a max contract", right?
JJT (1:58 PM)
I don't like Carmelo as a player. The ball stops in his hand. I haven't seen him make a bunch of other dudes better
What do you think about Bruce Boudreau's comments about the stars' physicality in Game 3? i think that when Getzlaf punches someone in the face, he opens himself up to getting punched, even if he does have stitches.
JJT (1:59 PM)
not much. everything a coach says this time of year is directed at his team or the officials. There's very little honesty
Greetings from Abu Dhabi, JJT? Any contract extension in the works for Mr Dez Bryant yet?
JJT (2:00 PM)
they're talking. No rush
Shawn (NC Mountains)
Hi JJT, Happy belated Easter my friend. Anyway, will the boys remain at 16 with their pick or trade down?
JJT (2:00 PM)
depends on who is there when it's time to pick. Or who they've targeted
Hey JJT what's the vibe with Orton around DFW? Do you think he is done and how much would that save if he hung up his cleats?
JJT (2:01 PM)
I've been busy with Mavs, so I haven't delved into that story too deeply. It's a big deal if he's not going to play. A really big deal.
Ray (From Southside)
JJT love ur work....now that the off season program has started for the boys adn the draft is right around the corner give us 2-3 guys that u think will make a jump forward this year and 2-3 guys u think wont??thanks
JJT (2:03 PM)
Hit me on Facebook Jean-Jacques Taylor or twitter @jjt_espndallas and I'll give you an answer when I have time to think about it. I haven't thought about that at all. I'm into baseball and the Mavs' playoffs and the Stars.
How have the Cowboys draft strategies changed this year? Hopefully they have learned from all of the small school busts and injury-prone potentials that have plagued them over the past 5-6 years, looking at the draft recaps that Calvin ran were so depressing, please give us some hope that there has been change when it comes to draft evaluation.
JJT (2:03 PM)
we won't know until the draft. They can say whatever they want, but until the draft starts we won;t know if they've really changed.
JJT, I personally think Devin Harris having success in this series is going to hurt Dirk and even Monta. Devin is a shoot first kind of player, and even though what he brings off the bench being able to get to the hole is a plus, when he starts playing 30 plus minutes because he has it going that is going to hurt Dirk and Monta. Dirk played 40 plus minutes in game 1 and only got 14 shots.. name me another superstar player who's team would only allow there primary scorer to get 14 shots.. Devin looks to penetrate or lob to Wright - thats it.. and his success in this series is going to be a contributing factor to Dirk and Monta not getting enough touches and the ball in the right spots
JJT (2:04 PM)
I would disagree. The Spurs are giving Harris and Monta those shots. If they make them, it opens everything else up like the lane and the three-point line. It;s up to Dirk and Monta to play better so they;re taking shots instead of Devin
Eddie Cook (Louisiana)
I really hope the Cowboys don't get cute like in year's past and trade up/down in the draft. Last year when tehy traded down, they got fleeced when compared to what New England got for trading down in the 1st round. Just take your picks when available and fortify that defense.
JJT (2:05 PM)
You can't say don't trade down and then talk about what New England got when it traded down. You either want teams to trade or you don't.
pump the brakes there JJT. we are a front runner city? i think we all root for our teams well here. it's not like i'm suddenly a red sox or heat fan. please elaborate on that.
JJT (2:06 PM)
I don't. Cubs fans root win or lose. Fans in our city show up when you win. All you have to do is look at attendance for Mavs, Rangers and Stars when they were losers compared to when they were winners. No comparison.
JJT (2:07 PM)
Bene a great chat today, but I've got some Mavs work to do. Let's do it again next week.
