What's up. I'm at Valley Ranch getting ready for the Cowboys' pre-draft news conference at 1 pm, so we'll have to cut it a little short today. They also have some type of sponsorship announcement scheduled to take place. (Yawn). Let's roll.

Game 7 worse coach game in Carlisle tenure with Mavs?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:05 PM)
Really? I'd say him going to small lineup to start the second half - Shawn Marion and Dalembert out and Devin Harris and Vince Carter in - helped them cut it to 14. And if Calderon had hit a wide open J from about 14 feet to cut it to 12 who know what might've happened. No, it wasn't Carlisle's worst-coached game.
d Dallas [via mobile]
Tell me the cowboys wouldn't possibly consider trading up, this team has more holes than a brillo pad dont they need to trade back to acquire more picks especially to account for the two jj is guaranteed to bust
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:08 PM)
I don't think you can make blanket statements like that. Now, I don't see them moving to the top of the draft, but what if it cost a 4th to move up to 13 and get Aaron Donald. Then that sounds like a good move. It's all about being flexible. It's about having a plan and an idea of what you're willing to do if a certain player is there when you pick.
William the colony [via mobile]
What do the mavs do this summer, we obviously need to upgrade center and sf. Dalembert needs to be the backup so maybe gortat or pau? As for sf a wright Ellington and mekel for josh Smith would be a great replacement for Marion
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:12 PM)
You need Monta to take 1,500 jumpers a day and make his mid-range game tight. Do that, and he will be unstoppable when it comes to getting into the lane. He did a nice job this season, but his no-show in Game 7 shows us that he's at that next level under a star. He can become a star because he's still capable of improving. Lance Stephenson would be nice addition. Gortat too. But teams also want to keep their own good players. Lual Deng would be nice. He can score and help defense.
cory (longview, tx.) [via mobile]
I would love to see the boys pick up jernigan. With his positive urinalysis, do you see him slipping to Dallas in the second round?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:15 PM)
The Cowboys see him at a guy who plays the 1-Technique, which means he's more of a run-stopper than a disruptive force like the 3-Technique is designed to be. He's the kind of guy the Cowboys would move down and get. It'll be interesting to see how his red-flagged drug test at the Combine affects his status. It was flagged for being diluted. They would love to find him in the second round. I don't know if he'll drop to 47.

How much for dirk this summer? Its floated around a 3 for Duncan deal, put dirk has always been a fantastic defender and rebounder, all dirk can do at this point is score and when his shot isnt on he's essentially just a floor spacer,3 for 24 looks a little better, we shouldn't reward guys for past production, he's really looked unmotivated since the title run
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:18 PM)
Dirk led team in scoring this year and finished 13th in the league in scoring at 35. He's still the best overall player on the team. He wore down against Spurs because he had to play nearly 40 minutes a game, which is too heavy a load for him But he had 26 and 14 in Game 5. He had 22 and 9 in Game 7. He'll probably get three years between $30 and $36 million. That's chump change in NBA money. Kobe is making $24million next season.
Kenyatta Adams (Roselle, NJ)
Good Afternoon Jean. I hope you are well. I'm really hoping that the Cowboys pick a Safety in the First Round. The Cowboys lost 3 games last year because of lack of great Safety play. The Cowboys need a Safety who can play centerfield effectively(A BallHawk). The Cowboys can find pass rushers in rounds 2 - 4. What are your thoughts ? Jean, I always respect your incite. You should be the GM for the Cowboys! Have a great day!!
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:20 PM)
I don't think Ha Ha Clinton-Dix or Calvin Pryor are necessarily worth the 16th pick in the draft. Cowboys used a 3rd on JJ Wilcox last year. Barry Church is fine and had a pretty good season. They can use a play-maker at safety, but I don't see either of those guys doing that.
John (Elysian Fields Texas)
Jean-JacquesI have a sick feeling Jerry is going to do something stupid on Thursday. Please tell me I am wrong...
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:21 PM)
Dude, I don't make promises I have no control over.
Wouldn't it be more prudent for the Mavs to targert a SF like Deng or Ariza while cutting bait with Carter and Marion so you don't get into the 4th qtr situations of Carlisle trying to decide defense vs. offense when you could have both in one player?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:22 PM)
True dat, but just because you want guys doesn't mean they will come here. Vince and Marion are great team guys and they remain valuable players, but this team should get younger and those types of players would help them do it
JJT, as a columnist you are required to have and share your opinions, so I was wondering when was a time that you were most wrong about something, and how did that affect you? It could be a player's talent, a player's character, a coach's/manager's ability, etc... I'm not trying to call you out or anything, just genuinely curious about the repercussions to having a job that requires that you bare your opinions for all to see.
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:28 PM)
That's a good question. The one thing folks really seem to have a hard time grasping in sports is that what's true TODAY might not be true TOMORROW or NEXT MONTH or NEXT YEAR. That's because players and teams evolve. After the Mavs lost to Golden State, I wrote the Mavs would never win a title with Dirk as the center piece because he was too soft. I wrote this after Mavs became first No.1 seed to lose best of 7 series to No. 8 seed. At the time it was true. Dirk averaged 19.7 in that series - the only time in a his first 11 seasons in the playoffs he averaged fewer than 23 points. The next year, though, against New Orleans the Mavs lost in the first round but Dirk was an absolute beast. I saw the growth and determination as a player and I started writing that Dirk could lead the Mavs, even though I didn't think they'd win a title. I did, however, write that he was the most under appreciated superstar in DFEW history. No one seems to remember that piece though. They just remember the piece I wrote after the Mavs' loss.Heck, even Dirk freely admits he changed as a player after that series.
JJT, JD had some pointed, but in IMO true, words about Elvis and his preparation and performance so far this season; all to coincide with his move to the 9 hole. Do you think it makes a difference (on any level) that these criticisms came from JD and not Wash? That's not to say that Wash doesn't share JD's criticism, but the point at which a team publicizes their displeasure with a player is usually calculated - so does the fact that JD said these things and not Wash say anything about the power dynamic within the Rangers' FO?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:30 PM)
I've been busy with Mavs, so I didn't hear those comments. I will say that Wash spoke with him during training camp and mentioned his displeasure with his off-season preparation. Sometimes, lessons must be learned the hard way. Elvis still a young guy. He's a good dude and hopefully, he'll use this awful start as a lesson that makes him train harder and better the rest of his career.
Who you got moving on to the NBA Conference Finals in the East and West?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:31 PM)
It's hard to believe Washington is going to the Eastern Conference finals against the Heat. Spurs and Thunder in West. Spurs over Heat.
Please tell me the Manziel nonsense is only a talking point because its the Cowboys?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:32 PM)
i assume so.
Bring back VCarter next year? If yes, at what price?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:32 PM)
slightly above minimum if that. Sometimes, you gotta move on. He's 36. Mavs need to get younger - not older.
gary wiley (seattle wa)
If the cowboys do trade down, and pick up kony ealy, do you see them trading back in 1st round for easly from florida ?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:33 PM)
Nope. If they move down, they're staying down
What happens first Cowboys win a playoff game or the Mavs get an A list player via free agency or trade?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:34 PM)
What picks do you see in 7th round (6 picks total) that has real value to this team? ie Jay Bromley, Larry Webster, Tyler Gaffney, JC Copeland. Thanks JJT
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:35 PM)
Bro, I'm not a draft guru. I love your passion, but I only do a little studying on the first couple rounds. When I was a beat guy, I could probably talk to you about the 7th round, but not now. It's so speculative, I don't like to invest in it.
Ron Guerra (Santa Monica)
I think if the Cowboys go exclusively with defense in the early rounds, do you think they would be better suited to trade back? All the defensive prospects look like reaches in and around 16.
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:36 PM)
It depends on who's there. I'd take Zack Martin and plug him in at guard for a year and then move him to tackle when Free leaves after next season with no problem
Clark (Dallas) [via mobile]
Who would you like to see the Cowboys draft in the first round or what would you like to see them do in the first round?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:37 PM)
Donald is the home run, but I don't see him there at 16. Martin is good too. Offensive or defensive line in a perfect world.
Kenneth Laskowski (Warren, Mi.)
Regardless of who is available at 16 (Donald not included), I feel the Cowboys should trade down a bit and pick up an extra second or third. If they are able to pick up an extra second, package those two second rounders to get back into the first. If it is an extra third rounder, package both of those to get back into the 2nd round for 2 second round picks....thoughts?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:40 PM)
That's too much work. I'd rather have 2 2nd rounders than the 28th pick and a 3rd round selection. This is the ultimate hypothetical. Let's see how it falls.
Bryan (Springdale, AR)
JJT, you seem to be one of the only guys that makes a comment similar to "no superstar wants to come play with a 35yo star who will be gone in a few years." This team in one star away from being a serious contender for a title as evidenced by taking the Spurs to 7 games.
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:41 PM)
Pretty big assumption to go from winning one series against Spurs - that didn't happen - to being a title contender. You're talking about the 8th team in the west, which finished 13 games behind the top team
Good Morning JJT. Thanks for hosting today's chat. The Cowboys need to focus on the DL and OL. Once they upgrade the lines. The Corners and Safeties will be fine. It all about the pass rush. Thoughts?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:42 PM)
The defensive line needs the most help, but you don't want to reach,. You;re better off getting a safe pick in the first round and getting a DL in 2nd round rather than hoping and praying a dude you reached for will work out
Will Carter stay at Mavs?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:43 PM)
If money is right. He made $3 million last year.
Can you see Garrett and MCclay having a difference of opinion when it comes to Jernigan now that the failed drug test came out knowing how Garrett wants RTOG..
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:44 PM)
It's not about their difference of opinion. As a group - coaches and scouts - they have to come to a consensus on how they view the player and that helps determine where he winds up on their draft board
Roger (Syracuse, NY)
My mother was/is a HUUUGE Demarcus Ware fan. I am trying to predict who her next favorite player is going to be. She is a defensive side of the ball fan, so who do you predict will earn her spot with their performance this year?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:45 PM)
dude, you better wait until after the draft unless you wanna ride with Sean Lee.
Do the mavs have enough trade assets to have a legitimate chance at acquiring a center if one becomes available on the trade market (thinking Chandler, Asik, Sanders, etc.)?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:45 PM)
they can just sign a free agent like Gortat or maybe Phil Jackson wants to get rid of Tyson Chandler
Do you think JJ & JG are on a "win now" or a "building future" mindset on this draft?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:46 PM)
It's not about his mindset when the owner is the GM. They have to do what's best for the franchise. You never go wrong doing it that way. Of course that's also why Garrett probably ain't interested in a quarterback in the first round. He wants help that a quarterback won't provide
Matthew (Virginia )
Will the MAVS playoff run attract free agents? Do you think Cuban will finally deliver this offseason with a superstar? Thanks!
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:48 PM)
I don't think so. The Mavs aren't one of the top teams in the West and their superstar is soon to be 36. The Mavs have shown no ability to add to their talent base through the draft like SA or OKC, so if they did sign a guy he has to realize that Father Time is gonna get Dirk sooner or later (hopefully much later) . That said Monta helps the situation as does Carlisle. who's a terrific coach.
I am a Cowboys fan, however, I've seen what they need to be a championship football team from the past 5 championship teams. I'm gonna tell you why the Boys will end this season at 7-9...We don't have a championship HEADcoach, QB, Safety, a Difference making Back (speed), no mauler on the line but Tyron, CB, DT's, and back to HC, he doesn't remember what it took to win 3 Super Bowls...His mentality is to pass 60-40...The boys will never win with that philosophy...We need a HC with a run 1st approach, which will set up the pass. That's what JJ did with Troy Aikman. Troy would have way more yards and TD's if he played in this BS offense, but he would be in a coma though. Establishing a running game protects your QB. So, you naive Cowboys fans watch the outcome at the end of this season 7-9, so when Garrett is gone they should get a REAL HC, such as, Saban, Dungy, could of had Lovie (watch what he does with TB), or even Gruden...These are proven winners.
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:50 PM)
They had one of the worst run-pass ratios in the NFL last year. It needs to be just a little better, but this isn't the running days of the 80s or 90s. The league is about throwing the ball. You just have to run it when you want to and when you need to - in the red zone and last four minutes of the game.
Michael (New Jersey)
If you had to grade the outlook for the Mavs going forward where would you rank them: Bright, Blurry, or OH GOD I CANT SEE?
JJT, Why are the boys not worried about taking a QB in the first round? I mean Romo is older and is coming of two back surgeries. If Manziel is available at 13 couldn't you see them trading up to get him?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:51 PM)
Blurry. They gotta get Dirk some help this offseason He doesn't need to be best player on team. If his load wash;t so heavy, it would make him better player. Think about that.
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:52 PM)
JJT, Why are the boys not worried about taking a QB in the first round? I mean Romo is older and is coming of two back surgeries. If Manziel is available at 13 couldn't you see them trading up to get him?Del Edit
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:54 PM)
Is a quarterback in the first round going to play this year? Or next year? Or the year after that? No, No and probably not. So why would you invest a pick in a dude who's going to sit for three years. Th
Agree or Disagree with the following statement....In the draft you owe the franchise to make the the picks that can potentially take you to the superbowl. So if the cowboys are high on manziel and they believe this why not take him at 16? Examples: 49'ers had Montana, traded for Young, GB had Favre drafted Rodgers or to a lesser extent Seattle had Flynn drafted Wilson.
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:55 PM)
Disagree. You have no guarantee Manziel is that good. There is no consensus on him. It depends on who you ask. Besides, he's gonna be on the bench for three years and this team has way too many holes to absorb that.
Do you think Ron Washington is done after this year if the team doesn't make the playoffs? The guy can't handle a pitching staff
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:59 PM)
lol....I thought Mike Maddux was supposed to be the best pitching coach in the game? You think Wash makes any pitching decision in a vacuum? I had questions about this rotation all spring and adding Ross and Scheppers to the bullpen is one reason the Rangers have lost several games after the seventh inning this season. If they can get Scheppers and Ross back to the bullpen, the Rangers will be much better. You fire the manager, when you believe he's the reason the team is not meeting expectations.
Are the Cowboys high on anyone else at 16 other than Donald/Manziel or do you see them trading down if those guys are gone?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (1:59 PM)
Zack Martin is a dude they like. I wouldn't be surprised to see them trade down.
tony (dallas) [via mobile]
I recently read a article about the mavs are interested in bring back Tyson. What kind of deal would that take to get him back to dallas?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (2:00 PM)
no idea. I thick he has a year left on his deal, so it would have to be a trade
Hey JJT, has your opinion of how the Rangers will finish this year changed from seeing them play for a month?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (2:01 PM)
Nope. 84-78 sounds good to me. Rotation questions remain and their offense is average at best
JJT, biggest surprise this year so far for Rangers?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (2:01 PM)
Fielder has been unproductive
Casey (Home Sick)
Manziel's going to be drafted way before the Cowboys are up. Yay or nay?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (2:02 PM)
I'd say yes. St. Louis might be a good fit for him at 13. Good offensive weapons. On turf and a coach who let Vince do his thing
Candy (Slippery Rock)
Hi JJT, what do you think is going on with Ogando and do you think he'll ever be back to being a dominant setup guy again?
Jean-Jacques Taylor (2:03 PM)
Good question. Too early to say. The bullpen is out of sorts right now. Bullpens work best when everyone has clearly defined roles. The Rangers also have to make sure they don't work him too hard.
Jean-Jacques Taylor (2:03 PM)
hey, I gotta roll. I'm pretty sure Bradie James is about to announce his retirement .
Phoenix (Lanai City)
Any concerns about Elvis or is this just a slump?
JJT (2:04 PM)
OK, two final bonus questions:slump. It happens.
Favorite thing about Globe Life Ballpark?
JJT (2:05 PM)
I hear the bacon on a stick is good. as a ballpark, I like the configuration. Short porch in right. Upper deck that's covered. High wall in left.
