Mark Saxon (4:35 PM)
OK everybody, it's good to be back chatting about the Angels. Let's get going.
what are the options for brandon wood now that alberto callaspo is at third base.
Mark Saxon (4:37 PM)
Earl,Excellent question. I have no idea what this team's long-term plan with Brandon is. It's pretty obvious that he's not making it through waivers since he's still in the big leagues. My guess is they'll trade him in the off-season, but it's a really unfortunate situation with his skills just rotting away on the bench.
Mark what are the chances that the Angels sign Cliff Lee next season and Manny Ramirez to DH next season?
Mark Saxon (4:38 PM)
Hey Danny, I'd say there's a 0.01 percent chance they sign Manny to DH and a 7.4 percent chance they sign Lee. I think after watching Matsui this year, they're not going to want another guy in steep decline at DH and I don't sense that pitching is their No. 1 priority this winter.
Anthony (Burbank, CA)
Hey Mark- watching Bourjos the last couple nights has made me realize how bad the outfied defense was with Abreu & Rivera at the corners. What are the odds we see a Hunter, Bourjos, Crawford OF next year?
Mark Saxon (4:40 PM)
Anthony, That possibility has to be an exciting one for Angels fans. I think the team will make a serious run at Crawford. But will the Yankees, or another team, out-bid them?If they go with that look, they could use Abreu as they've used Matsui, a DH who gets spot starts in the outfield.
Luis (Burbank, CA)
Hey Mark. Besides Carl Crawford, are there any other free agent names being talked about by the Angels?
Mark Saxon (4:44 PM)
Luis, They don't really talk openly, even about Crawford, as it would be considered tampering. I wouldn't be surprised to see them make inquiries about Jorge Cantu, Adrian Beltre and David DeJesus. Just a few possibilities.
Bob (New Jersey)
Do you think that Thome will get more generous voting for the HOF since he has not been linked in any way to PEDs then he would have had there been no PED use in baseball? Actually, his career stats compared to say Reggie Jackson are really not that off anyway. In fact, while post season is certainly one aspect of one's career (where no one would deny Reggie?s success, incidentally Thome only has 1 less HR in over 70 fewer ABs) Thome's numbers seem to justify strong consideration when compared to Jackson. For example, Thome with more HRs in almost 2,000 less Abs ? that?s amazing, Thome with 8 100+ runs scored seasons - Jackson with 1, Thome with 12-30 HR seasons - Jackson with 7, Thome with 9-100 RBI seasons - Jackson with 6, Thome with 5 seasons of 1.000 OPS - Jackson with 1 (In fact Jackson only had 2 seasons in his career that had higher OPS's then Thome's career OPS ? again pretty amazing) Thoughts? Thanks
Mark Saxon (4:46 PM)
Bob, I think Jim Thome will be a Hall of Famer. His combination of power and on-base percentage should be enough to get him in. Not by much, but he will make it, in my opinion.
ryan (stevens point, wisconsin)
is it fun to be involved in baseball in some way?i think it would be a fun job.
Mark Saxon (4:47 PM)
Ryan,It's about as much fun as you can have while getting paid to do it.
HUGE ANGELS FAN. what are the chances we get back in this? Arte must understand in the offseason he needs to open up that checkbook. How about signing Beltre,Crawford and bullpen help?
Mark Saxon (4:48 PM)
Hi Kelly, Is it tough being an Angel fan in the shadow of the Ballpark in Arlington? Yeah, Arte probably gets that. He already started writing checks when the team got Dan Haren, so that tells you he's still into it.
Is peter bourjous a permanent solution at center or do the angels need to sign a free agent center fielder in the offseason?
Mark Saxon (4:51 PM)
Earl, that's one of the reasons he's here now. They want to see how he handles major-league pitching before making that decision. It's easier to find a corner outfielder than a center fielder, so I'm guessing he's got a great opportunity to be the guy.
Mark, I want your opinion is this season over? or can we still get back in it? Its just tough when you lose Lackey,Figgy,Vladdy,Doliver
Mark Saxon (4:54 PM)
Kelly, It's over. Sorry. I just think there are too many guys having bad years and, now, two-fifths of the starting rotation is a mess. That's 40 percent of their upcoming games they'll have Trevor Bell and, maybe, Scott Kazmir on the mound. If it's not Kazmir, the replacement might be even worse. It certainly doesn't look promising. Sorry to be Debbie Downer.
Mark Saxon (4:55 PM)
On that uplifting note, I'm going to wrap things up. I have to get to a USC practice. Remember, there's always next season.
