Any chance the Yankees could/will trade Javier Vasquez? I was thinking a landing place could be Milwaukee. If they threw in Vasquez and a couple of prospects, could they get back Prince Fielder, since the rumor is the Brewers won't be able to pay him anyways.
Andrew Marchand (12:03 PM)
I don't know if there is much of a market for Javy Vazquez at $11.5 million and pitching poorly, but you never know.
Daniel Dragoo (Milwaukee)
Why would Lebron come to New York? It is going to take at least 4 years there for the Knicks to build a contender around him. Plus they will be paying him so much, that they may not beable to sign him some help.
Andrew Marchand (12:06 PM)
LeBron will come to NYC because he could bring Chris Bosh with him. Look at the Cavs' roster? If you take him off that roster, they are nothing. You put him on the Knicks' roster and they are at least a 50-win team. You add Chris Bosh to him and you have a team that is playing at this time next year. That said, I don't know if he comes, but I think he can make an argument that he is going to a winner if everything goes right for the Knicks.
Bob (Lynchburg, VA)
I know we are a long way away from the trade deadline, but are the Yanks going to try to make a big splash (if you look in your crystal ball right now) or just maybe get a 5th starter and maybe a healthy bat that could DH.
Andrew Marchand (12:08 PM)
Bob, Right now, I would say their biggest need is in the pen. Relievers are hard to predict, but I could see them adding a guy or two for the sixth and seventh innings. If Javy doesn't pull through, then maybe they get a fifth starter. But I could see them turning to Sergio Mitre in that spot.
whats up Andrew. its clear the yanks need another outfielder with some pop, what do you hear and who do you think is available
Andrew Marchand (12:10 PM)
Rob, thanks for checking in.That is the one aspect of the Yankees and you say, "Are these the Yankees?" The Yankees have dominant players at almost every positon, but outfield. That said, Girardi and Cashman love Brett Gardner and their love has paid off so far. Gardner's been very good. I didn't like the Granderson deal and now that he is hurt, it is hard to imagine he will have a great year. Swisher has been productive.I don't think at this point they will trade for OF unless there is a major injury in the lineup.
Geremy (salt lake city)
Are the Yankees looking at any other options for Dh to replace Johnson.
Andrew Marchand (12:12 PM)
The Yankees are going to rotate the DH for now. They will give Juan Miranda some of Johnson's at-bats, but look for Jorge Posada to DH more. The Yankees won't say it because they don't want to upset Jorge, but their best team right now is with him as the DH and Cervelli behind the plate.I love it, Salt Lake, checking in.
Serge (Rockaway (via Moldova))
Any chance the Yanks bring in Jermaine Dye?
Andrew Marchand (12:13 PM)
I don't think so. They have plenty of chances.I mean, maybe if there is another injury, there could be a chance. But I don't think he is their guy and unless he is willing to take some minor coin, I don't see it happening.
Hayden (Logan, Utah)
Why all the yanks talk? How bout them Mets!
Andrew Marchand (12:15 PM)
Hayden:Not really a question, but apparently I'm huge in Utah so let's spark some Mets' talk.I think it is inevitable that Jerry Manuel will be fired. Is it his fault they are not very good? Probably not.But the Wilpons will need a fall guy soon. This is how they operate because the heat is about to be turned up on them. Especially with the Subway Series this weekend.
Andrew, Have we gone from a matter of if to a matter of when the Mets fire Jerry Manuel in the past week?
Andrew Marchand (12:16 PM)
Harry:I think you are right. I think Met fans, which I'm guessing you are one, are about to get really frustrated with this organization. The Mets got a little bit of a respite with the winning streak, but now they need a couple of wins in the ATL or it coud get ugly this weekend against the Yanks. I truly think Bobby V is great on our air, but he would be the guy I would hire.
When does Beltran come back and what can we expect out of him?
Andrew Marchand (12:18 PM)
Tom:You nailed it with how you phrased your question: What can we expect from him? When Beltran does comeback -- if he comes back -- what is realistic? I think all that Boras-Mets back-and-forth may not be over.Beltran isn't really doing much yet so the All-Star Break may be the goal. But I think the bigger thing is: Who are you getting at that point? Might not be that much of an upgrade over Pagan.
SprungOnSports (Long Island)
Omar Minaya has to be in Atlanta to seriously evaluate Manuel's job status. Is he week to week at this point and has Bob Melvin been seen publicly recently?
Andrew Marchand (12:20 PM)
Bob Melvin seems to be the guy. Apparently Fred Wilpon is not high on bringing Bobby V back. Melvin might be an improvement and the Mets, I think, hope a milqtoast (sp) pick could lead to a hot finish. If that doesn't work they are going to need something for next year to fire up the fan base or the concessions stands could have short lines next year.
Bob (Lynchburg, VA)
Even though, I am a Yankees fan, I'll throw in a Mets question. When does Omar take some of the blame for this mess? When may his bags be packed?
Andrew Marchand (12:22 PM)
Bob:Very good point. I like Omar. I've known him for a long time, but he has to take the blame; especially for what I like to call his annual Orlando Hernandez Lifetime Achievemant Award Contract of the Winter. This year's went to Kelvim Escobar. That said, this offseason, his hands were tied by ownership. Some of it was his own fault. But don't be mistaken the biggest culprits in this mess are the Wilpons. They are running the show.
Chayim (Monsey, NY)
I got Phil Hughes and Ubaldo Jiminez as my early Cy Youngs, what are your first month of the year awards?
Andrew Marchand (12:23 PM)
Hughes has been awesome. Tonight, he can add to that Cy resume. These are the types of games aces win. The Red Sox might be down, but at home against Boston is when aces take care of biz.
Matt (Glen Rock, NJ)
I know arod has picked up recently, but is his slow start linked to any injuries such as the hip?
Andrew Marchand (12:25 PM)
Matt:That is a fair point. I was on SportsCenter this morning and I was asked about A-Rod by Hannah Storm. I didn't bring up the hip, but it could be a factor. What I did bring up was he is turning 35 this year and last year he admitted doing PEDs in the past. Hmmm.If A-Rod didn't have last October, this would be rivaling LeBron as the biggest story in the city.
chris (north richland hills tx)
i heard this morning that the cavs would do a sign and trade any chance that dallas would get him? even though i would love for him to go to the bulls
Andrew Marchand (12:27 PM)
You are going to hear every possiblity for the next 40 days. I predict soon we will hear again about Euro team going after LeBron. I guess there is a chance that Dallas could get him. But I don't know if he would want to go there. I don't think they are setup to put the best pieces around the King.
Which baseball player in NY has the worst contract...I feel like its a long list of potentials.
Andrew Marchand (12:28 PM)
Interesting question.I think the easy answer is Ollie Perez (3 years, $36 million and no production). Kelvim Escobar is making more than a million to do nothing. A-Rod's deal could eventually wind up in this category.
lebron is way overrated he hasnt won anything and he never will. When he QUITS games the way he did i think the world finally seen the real lebron the player who quits on his team when things werent going his way.QUITER....
Andrew Marchand (12:29 PM)
Wow. Harsh words. I think there are plenty of people in the Big Apple who will take that "Quitter" and trust us, the Knicks know quitters.
Andrew Marchand (12:30 PM)
Kei Igawa, good point from Chayim in Monsey, NY. He has to be in that conversation. Poor guy can't even get on the roster because the Yanks don't want that bad money to count against the luxury tax.
Andrew Marchand (12:32 PM)
OK, that is going to do it for the Monday chat. Gotta get going to the park for Yanks-Sox tonight. Thanks to everyone for joining. For those whose questions I didn't get to, I apologize, but please time in again next time. I enjoyed it. Remember we chat every Monday at noon. Cya next week.
