Jane McManus (1:01 PM)
Hi all. Welcome to this week's chat. I am filling in for the venerable Rich Cimini, so I will be unable to answer your questions about Suffolk County youth sports. Lets get started...
Mark (San Jose)
Hi Jane and nice to see you on chat. What's your take on Greene? Is this his breakout year or is his time as a Jet coming to an end?
Jane, Will the Jets have a pass rush this year? I sure hope so.
Jane McManus (1:19 PM)
That was a question during the last offseason as well. The Jets brought Jason Taylor last season but he wasn't as explosive as in Miami
Jane McManus (1:19 PM)
There was a report he'd like to come back and reprise his role.
Hi Jane. I used to read your work in the Journal News back in the day. After a week of hearing that a deal was close, now we are hearing that it is far from it. What are some of the things you're hearing about the CBA?
Jane McManus (1:21 PM)
Hi Matt, always good to see Nanuet up there. I head that last night's talks were fruitful, and got a little more optimism from some players today. We will see... both sides want a season.
Simple question, when will the lockout end?
Jane McManus (1:24 PM)
My guess is they get a deal in principle done this week or next. There was progress last night, although I think it's a mistake to take off a long weekend at this critical point. Hopefully the lawyers will be working through the fireworks.
IRA (Staten Island)
Jane,How much of an affect if any do you think having camp in NJ instead of Cortland will there be? I think its something to keep an eye on.
Jane McManus (1:27 PM)
Having training camp in New Jersey will make a huge difference when it comes to team bonding. Instead of hanging out at Walmart looking for items they couldn't stuff into their Louis Vuitton suitcases, they will be hanging with wives, family and hometown friends -- the very people Rex Ryan wanted to escape! But this season everything is going to feel rushed from the end of the lockout to the first game of the season.
Hi Jane, thanks for keeping the chats going. Why isn't Brad Smith given more of a role at WR ? He sure seems to be incredibly smart and capable, but he's mostly only used for seminole and returns ?
Jane McManus (1:31 PM)
Oz, I think a lot of people probably agree that Smith has been underused considering how versatile he is. Here you have a great college quarterback who never throws out of the wildcat. But there were a lot of good receivers on the team this season, and it's hard to get enough balls to Holmes, Edwards, Cotchery and Keller as is. Smith will be a free agent this year, so tough to know whether he will be a Jet next season.
In your opinion, which WR should the jets keep at the right price?
Jane McManus (1:36 PM)
Sophie's choice -- Holmes or Edwards. Braylon's numbers were a bit better, but Holmes missed games. I tend to appreciate Braylon a little more, but his DUI trial begins on July 22 in Manhattan. There is risk in resigning him because he could face jail time for a probation violation if found guilty in the DUI case. Edwards missed his last court date and got in a fender bender a week ago, no charges filed. On the other hand, Holmes expressed some dissatisfaction with the Jets after the season. Both are great receivers, but you have to weigh cost against talent and risk..
IRA (Staten Island)
Jane,I have Greene penciled in for about 275 carries for 1300 yds and 6 TD's. Do you think with his physical runningstyle he can handle the work load?
Jane McManus (1:39 PM)
Ira, we've talked about how his upright style can lead to some injuries. Especially his rookie season. He spent last year as the presumed No. 1 back until LaDanian Tomlinson earned it in all but name. I think Greene could have a breakout year, and hopefully has learned to protect himself a little more as he rushes.
Hi Jane, If a CBA is reached within a couple of weeks, how soon do the Jets get together and start practicing ? I expect training camp wouldn't start till the end of July so would they wait ?
Jane McManus (1:40 PM)
I'm hearing Aug. 1 for players to report, which is the same as a normal season. The teams can only cut it short for a week or so before they risk throwing raw players into situations they aren't physically ready for. Be prepared to see who didn't spend their summer vacation working out!
Gilligan (Nova Scotia)
Would we (Jets) bring JT back for 1 more year and a discounted rate, I think we should, whats the mindset in NY
Jane McManus (1:43 PM)
I was surprised to see Taylor was interested in coming back, because some of his teammates assumed he wouldn't be back after the AFC championship loss. Given the way free agency will be insane, and that teams will probably have a few days to resign their own guys first with a reduced period in which to teach new guys your system, Taylor is more attractive than in a normal year.

Is this the last year Jets think Sanchez needs Brunell as veteran guru/backup? In 2012 will Jets #2QB be a younger , maybe more talented QB?
Jane McManus (1:47 PM)
Well they did draft one. It's an interesting question. Sanchez probably doesn't need the hand-holding in his third season. The team has Kevin O'Connell, Brunell and Kellen Clemens on the roster. Can you see the team feeling comfortable with any of them in a live game situation?
Andy ONeill (Hartford CT)
There has been some chatter about how Sanchez should consider renegotiating his salary to help keep players on the team. What are your thoughts?
Jane McManus (1:50 PM)
It's a little soon to ask him to renegotiate when the new CBA hasn't been worked out yet. If Sanchez wants to do that to help the Jets, I would hope he would be given some additional form of compensation that didn't count against the cap. But my thinking is, Sanchez -- or any player -- can't create cap problems for a team, the team does.
Sean (Englewood, NJ)
Jane,What's your thoughts on Vlad DuCasse and do you think the Jets bring back Damien Woody, simply because Vlad is unproven? Also, do you think Wayne Hunter is worthy of a starting role? His mental blunder in last year's AFC championship kind of got me off the Hunter bandwagon.
Jane McManus (1:54 PM)
I think this was not the right year to name Ducasse the starter. There just isn't enough time to get him ready for such a big role when Matt Slauson is still developing. I like Wayne Hunter, he is a good utility lineman but if the Jets wanted to make him a starter I think that would be clearer by now. In general though, you want to talk about potential for showing up to camp out of shape? I haven't seen a lot of offensive linemen at the team workouts. We'll find out in August...
Oscarfactor (Kansas City)
Any update on Kenrick Ellis's legal situation?
Jane McManus (1:55 PM)
I'd stay tuned on that one...
Technical difficulties ? Only see the questions, no responses from Jane.
Jane McManus (1:55 PM)
Sorry about that earlier. Just reread and we got off to a shaky start.
Michael (Port Charlotte, FL)
How is it that Mark Sanchez gets NO love? He wins - period! FOUR, count 'em, FOUR playoff road wins. Freeman of TB and Stafford, fellow QBs from the 2009 draft get more respect with a lot less of a resume. Your thoughts?
Jane McManus (2:00 PM)
I'll end with this one because there is another question in the queue about when do the Jets cut Sanchez. In his two seasons, Sanchez has done a lot of good things for the Jets -- 2 AFC Championships, winning on the road, etc. -- and some bad. His body language betrays him and he can get streaky with the picks. I think the jury is still out on what kind of a QB he will ultimately be, but the Jets are in this with him all the way. But some people will always despise Sanchez because he follows Justin Bieber on Twitter.
Jane McManus (2:02 PM)
Thanks for bearing with me through the technical problems and submitting a lot of really top-notch questions despite three years of no football. Or that's what it seems like anyway. Until next time!
