Wallace Matthews (11:57 AM)
Good afternon, everyone and welcome to the Yankee Stadium Arthur Richman Memorial Pressbox version of the weekly live chat. We'll get underway in precisely three minutes
Chris Fiegler (Latham,NY)
What Happened to Mark Texiera? Will he Be out for 2 Months also like Alex Rodriguez?
Wallace Matthews (12:00 PM)
They';re calling it inflammation of the left wrist and it happened on a swing and miss Sunday night. Supposedly, he could be back as early as Friday night.
Chicken Little (Bronx, NY)
Help, the sky is falling!
Wallace Matthews (12:00 PM)
Run for cover!!!!
Will the Yankees bringing back jobs chamberlain have a better more stronger bullpen
Wallace Matthews (12:02 PM)
I think so. From all reports -- and I did not get to see any of his rehab starts -- Joba is throwing as hard as he did back in 2007. If he comes back strong, that means the Yankees could lock down 7-8-9 and use the rest of them, the Boone Logans and Cody Eppleys etc etc to get through the sixth. significantly shortens the game
Wally, I think the Yanks need another bonafide starter in a hurry.. Do you see them doing a waiver deal to get one?
Wallace Matthews (12:03 PM)
Can;t say right now. It depends on how well Pettitte's rehab progresses, and if something really good drops into their laps. But i think if Pettitte is going ot make it back by early September, as planned, they will leave things as they are. Unless, of course, Cliff Lee goes unclaimed on waivers
is Girardi thinking of mixing up the lineup? Do you think Granderson should be moved down in the order? His mindset seems to be HR or strikeout (even though he denies he's a power hitter).
Wallace Matthews (12:04 PM)
You see what he did with the lineup today, although it's tough to judge since it's a day game after a night game, Teixeira is out and the team is going poorly. But I could see him maybe moving Ichiro up to No. 2 and moving Granderson to fifth or sixth
How is Aardsma progressing?
Wallace Matthews (12:05 PM)
Aardsma was shut down for awhile, had another MRI, and has just started throwing again. I think the idea of him coming back this season is a lot less likely than it seemed a month ago
when do you think ichiro's first multi-hit game as a yank will be?
Wallace Matthews (12:05 PM)
why not today?
Wally, despite the tendancy of Yankee fans to want to get out on the ledge, I think the Yanks still win the division. I just don't see this team winning a postseason series. Their starting pitching is good, not dominant (even CC). Their lineup never produces runs when it needs to and the bullpen is suddenly very shaky (barring a Joba 2007 re-birth). Do you see this team advancing should they make the playoffs?
Wallace Matthews (12:08 PM)
I agree they will still win the division. As far as the post-season, it's a bit of a crapshoot. I've never quite understood the difference between a team "built for the playoffs" as opposed to one built to win its division. You'd figure a team good enough to win 95+ games is good enough to advance in the post-season, and remember, the Yankees could easily have gone on to the ALCS with one timely hit in Game 5 against the Tigers. I think a lot of it has to do with who's healthy come October, who';s hot, and who the opponent is. a lot of times, that has nothing to do with what went on in the regular season.
what do you think the reason for the yankees recent struggles are?
Wallace Matthews (12:09 PM)
Until all the evidence is in, I'll assume that it's the normal ups-and-downs of the baseball season. Remember, it was just two weeks ago that they looked far and away like the best team in baseball. They didn't become a bad team overnight, just a cold one
Are the Yankees simply on a run of bad luck and injuries recently, or is this team more flawed than I thought?
Wallace Matthews (12:12 PM)
The Yankees flaws now are the same ones they had at the start of the season -- a lot of aging players in the everyday lineup who are prone to breakdowns. But I think you;d have to agree the starting pitching has been better than expected, the bullpen has been better than anyone had a right to expect without Mariano and until now, Joba, and the bench is deeper than it was last year. So whether you want to call it bad luck, injuries, or just the cyclical nature of the game, where teams go through hot and cold spells, I don;t think what the Yankees are going through right now is a permanent condition
Alec F (Manasquan, NJ)
How do you think Ichiro would do leading off with Jeter batting second and everyone else sliding back a spot. With a rod and Tex injured it might help to have that bat at the top of the lineup
Wallace Matthews (12:13 PM)
I think you could bat Ichiro-Jeter 1-2 or Jeter-Ichiro and have a very effective top of lineup. It also moves the power bat of Granderson deeper into the order, where I think it works better. But just because you and I like something doesn;t mean Girardi likes it. Or maybe The Binder says no.
Do you like the Yankees bringing jobs back early
Wallace Matthews (12:14 PM)
Given the Yankees caution with Joba throughout his career, and with just about everyone on their roster, I strongly suspect they would not have brought him back unless they were sure he was ready. we'll see, maybe today
Jake (New York)
When do you think Brandon Laird will be given his shot in the big leagues? He seems to have a lot of power and a decent glove. I think they need to at least give him a look. What do you think?
Wallace Matthews (12:15 PM)
He's been here although not really given much of a shot to show what he can do. I think the trade for McGehee pretty much assures we won;t see him again until Septeber callup time
Do you see Casey MaGahee being the odd man out when A-rod returns from the DL?
Wallace Matthews (12:19 PM)
Depends on how well he performs between now and then. Could be Nix or one of the relief pitchers, depending also on how Joba does
Has Sanchez supplanted Romine as the catcher of the future? Think we'll see him next season? Cervelli still in the mix?
Wallace Matthews (12:20 PM)
Romine's back problems this season have certainly set him back, but you stillhave to figure he's a little ahead of Sanchez simply because of age and experience. As for Cervelli, he;s the forgotten man, perhaps never to be seen again. Sad. I liked the dude
Even by Yankee standards I was astounded that Reggie is paid $750,000 to be a senior advisor. Seems like often in MLB this type position is ceremonial or PR and even if it isn't the salary is but a small fraction of what Reggie Jax earns. Exceptions would be mgr/GM finishing out their contract. Seems like Reggie mostly a big brother to inflated egos. I think we could agree that Reggie is overpaid, but can you name a situation where RJ was instrumental in resolving a players professional problem that nobody else on the staff could have? Is Reggie worth more than the problems he causes?
Wallace Matthews (12:24 PM)
Reggie was bequeathed to Hal and Hank by their dad, who to his credit always took care of former Yankees who had performed well for him. I've seen Reggie have lng talks with Cano and A-Rod, although I would guess those have come to an end, but in answer to your question, Im not sure what real function he serves for the team other than a ceremonial one, like Yogi. And personally, I like having him around. He's fun to talk to, even if we only talk about him
How's CC doing this year: I havent been able to watch much...
Wallace Matthews (12:25 PM)
really . . .
Explain how Waiver deals work and how tough it is to make a deal for a player placed on waivers. Could you see the Yankees getting Lyle Overbay as an upgrade over Jayson Nix?
Wallace Matthews (12:27 PM)
it's a complicated process but in a nutshell, a team places a guy on waivers, and if any team puts a claim in for him, the team can either pull him back and try to arrange a trade with the claiming team, or do nothing and let the team claim him and any remaining salary. if two or more teams claim the same player, the one with the worst record gets priority. As for Overbay/Nix, right now, the Yankees seem quite happy with Nix as a fill-in INF
Oliver (New York)
Do you think Pettitte's setback is anything to worry about? Cashman said he is still on target to return in early September. Do you agree?
Wallace Matthews (12:28 PM)
Haven;t spoken to Pettitte in about a week but in my experience with Cashman, the GM is not a liar and if he says something, it's usually true. So i'll take him at his word until proven otherwise
Will Mason Williams and/or Tyler Austin get a cup 'o joe next month?
Wallace Matthews (12:29 PM)
judging by their caution with young players, probably not, although they might be brought up just to hang around the clubhouse and get the lay of the land, the way the Yankees did with Betances and some others last september
Oliver (New York)
After this season, do you think A rod goes to Cashman to restructure his contract to perhaps 75% of what hes due? That would earn a lot of props with the fans, and allow the team more flexibility. He has to know hes not worth $28 million/year
Wallace Matthews (12:30 PM)
Nice idea. No
Wallace Matthews (12:31 PM)
Thanks everyone, We'll try this again next week, no?
