Strange things are afoot in the Pac-12. reported that conference basketball coordinator of officiating Ed Rush said to officials before the Pac-12 tournament that they would receive $5,000 or a trip to Cancun if they called a technical foul or ejected Arizona coach Sean Miller. Referee Michael Irving did end up calling a technical on Miller during Arizona's 66-64 semifinal loss to UCLA. Rush says his comments were in jest, and a Pac-12 investigation agreed, but even if Rush was joking, his comments don't look great when considering the competitive integrity of college basketball.

More than a joke?

Rush's statement to officials may have been in jest, but considering the closeness of the game and the fact that Miller claims all he said was ''he touched the ball'' several times, it doesn't look great to outside observers.

Rush's punishment?

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott said that the conference has talked to Rush and ''taken steps'' to prevent something like this from happening again, but is it enough?
