Major League Baseball dedicated its Sept. 1 games to Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, in recognition of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. In part to help raise awareness, the Baltimore Orioles signed Jimmy Martino of Fallston, Maryland, to an honorary one-day contract on Friday.
Jimmy, a member of the Make-A-Wish Foundation, was diagnosed with a brain tumor in January.
Dan Duquette, the Orioles' vice president of baseball operations, held a news conference on Friday to introduce Jimmy to the club.
As an honorary member of the team, Jimmy will have his own locker with his nameplate and a jersey. He'll also hand the umpires the Orioles' lineup card and throw out the ceremonial first pitch prior to the game against the Blue Jays.
