Nobody does outreach the way the Spurs do. Thanks to an overactive community relations program that featured Manu Ginobili tweeting brain teasers as part of Manu’s Mathletes; Aussie native Patty Mills playing the didgeridoo at Green Valley Elementary; and Kawhi Leonard exercising with Carson Elementary schoolers as part of the Team Up Challenge, the Western Conference champs outclassed the entire field in the fan relations category for the eighth time in 11 years since the standings debuted. Even though it’s one of four categories they topped -- and they were the sole team in the 122-squad field with as many as seven top-10 rankings -- the Spurs somehow managed to miss out on the No. 1 overall spot. Again. (They finished third last year.) Blame it on the law of (weighted) averages; the three areas in which the Spurs trailed the Grizzlies (this year’s standings champ) accounted for nearly half of the overall score. Confused? Perhaps one of Manu’s Mathletes could help explain.
