American CiCi Bellis, 17, turns professional

CiCi Bellis, a 17-year-old American who advanced to the third round of the US Open before falling to eventual champion Angelique Kerber, announced Tuesday she is turning pro.

"She's a great young, really talented player," Kerber said of Bellis after her 6-1, 6-1 win at the Open. "For sure she will have a great future."

Bellis, then 15, became a fan favorite at Flushing Meadows in 2014 when she upset 12th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova. The California native is currently ranked 120th in the world.

Bellis, who left her $140,000 US Open paycheck on the table earlier this month, had committed to Stanford.
