The New Jersey Nets played from the 1981-82 season through last April at the Meadowlands (now Izod Center), but finally got out of their lease after years of trying. The Nets paid $4 million to the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, some of which will be offset by advertising, suite revenue and other revenues. The Nets faced a $7.5 million penalty if they broke the lease early. The team also has a new principal owner in Mikhail Prokhorov. With a move to the Prudential Center, the club rejoins the NHL's Devils at the same venue and hopes to attract a fan base before it moves permanently to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for the 2012-13 season. The Prudential Center, also known as "The Rock," is a key component in the revitalization of downtown Newark. The Prudential Center also is home to Seton Hall men's basketball, the New York Liberty of the WNBA and several name musical acts and other sporting events. The Prudential Center hosted the 2011 NCAA men's basketball East Regional.
