Playing without injured stars Sue Bird and Breanna Stewart, the Seattle Storm still opened defense of the 2018 WNBA championship with a 77-68 win over the visiting Phoenix Mercury Saturday. The Storm got 21 points, 16 rebounds and five steals from Natasha Howard, while swarming Seattle defense held Brittney Griner to 9-of-19 shooting and six turnovers. DeWanna Bonner scored a game-high 31 points for Phoenix.

Down seven after committing eight turnovers in the first quarter, the Seattle Storm managed to junk up the game in the second period, holding the Phoenix Mercury to just nine points and tying the score at 32 heading to halftime. Seattle is shooting just 34 percent but has six more shot attempts and five more free throw attempts than Phoenix thanks to seven offensive rebounds to the Mercury's zero.
