Maddison out with collapsed lung
LOS ANGELES -- Robbie Maddison's long and gory injury history got worse Saturday when the popular Australian suffered a collapsed lung and laceration on his right leg during practice for that evening's Moto X Speed & Style competition. The accident happened while he was practicing in the whoops on the speed course.
He was transported to a local hospital and was being evaluated further Saturday evening. Initial reports of a compound fracture of his right tibia and fibula were incorrect, because deformity in his leg was determined by X-rays to have been pre-existing.
Maddison withdrew from his Moto X events last year because of compressed vertebrae in his lower back, and he missed the 2007 and 2009 X Games with a broken leg and dislocated shoulder, respectively. He had back surgery this past January to repair a ruptured disc and didn't start riding again until late May.
After withdrawing last year, he said, "It's not like I'm scared of riding injured. I'm a hard charger. I got silver in Best Trick [in 2010] with a broken hand."
Javier Villegas will take Maddison's place in the Speed & Style field.
