Live X Games BMX Blog - Wednesday

7:22 p.m. PST: It's time to add Wednesday practice to the record books for X Games 15 (watch our Face Time: BMX Park Rules video HERE). So here goes. Last night, the bullets worked so good that I think another set of bullets is in order. So let's get down to brass tacks. - Upheaval on the park course. Mirra was out as of last night, and heavy hitter Daniel Dhers doesn't seem to be feeling it either. Chalk it up to Daniel waiting on a new bike from KHE, or the massive amount of open wounds on both his shoulders and his knees. With Dhers taking it easy, park qualifying is anyone's game. Look for Hawk, Darden, Whitton, Enarson, Wade and about ten more heavy hitters putting the pressure on last year's X Games Park Champ. - Insanity on the street course. San Sexton and Garrett Reynolds showed up for practice today, and immediately started throwing down insane runs, including flairs over the brick channel from Sean, and gaps to smith from Garrett. The format is going to be a bit different in street qualifying this year, owing more to tricks pulled than a jam format, so again, street could go anyway. Sean Sexton proved that Garrett Reynolds isn't unbeatable at X Games Mexico last September, and the level of progression from every other rider in street is at an all time high. At least until they learn new stuff later in the year... -Vert sessions from Tim Wood. Tim Wood is definitely cranking it to 11 in the practice sessions, with turndown flairs in the 8-ft. range, riding on his own throughout most of practice. Think about that. You're all alone, riding a vert ramp solo, and deciding "To heck with it, I'm going to wreck this ramp three days before the actual contest." Australia's Tim Wood, thanks for throwing down. - BT

7:05 p.m. PST: Chad Kagy and Dennis McCoy just showed up to cruise some vert runs, but they're just warming up and bs-ing on the deck. Dennis said he's late because he needed to eat a banana. And that's going to be about it for vert practice. We're going to try and wrap up our live coverage soon, but expect vert to be pretty darn crazy as usual.

So that's why they call it "Vert" ...

6:35 p.m. PST: In between vert runs from Tim, we're putting our new finger bikes to the test on X Games 15 vert. Check it. - BT

So that's why they call it "Vert" ...

6:35 p.m. PST: We're still hanging out on the vert ramp, and it looks like we're going to be witnessing a Tim Wood solo session. In case you're not familiar with Tim, he's an Australia-based vert rider that's not afraid to throw down 900s, barspin 5s and more. He's got a solid vert pump, airs around the 10-ft mark and rides a nicely kept Colony Sect setup. He also doesn't mind us live blogging about him while he practices. So thumbs up for Tim! - BT

6:17 p.m. PST: At vert now. So far, its just Tim Wood padding up. Hopefully, we'll see some more big vert names on the deck tonight. We've been hearing some unsubstantiated rumors about Kevin Robinson potentially having to take it easy this week due to a heel problem, so we might have to wait till the actual comp to see anything from K. Rob. And where in the heck is DMC tonight!!! - BT

We gave one of our Flip Mino video cameras to Chris Doyle yesterday and he got us the goods. Check it out! - CY

Aaron Ross and mini-Aaron Ross

5:19 p.m. PST: Earlier today, I tagged along with Aaron Ross to Spin Master toys to pick up some finger bikes and Mega Ramps. We got a sneak preview of Aaron's Sunday Funday finger bike, along with an Aaron Ross action figure. How cool is that! Aaron's bike and figure should be in stores soon, but we got the sneak preview pic right here. Check it. - BT

4:59 p.m. PST: Practice is starting to wind down, and it's safe to say that the actual comp is going to be insane. If today's practice session is any indication of anything anyway. Wow, it was that good. In the words of Cody, "watching today's practice made me feel giddy like a school girl!" - BT

4:09 p.m. PST: Best hair in park practice: Dakota Roche's Beach Fro Most likely to be mistaken for James Hetfield of Metallica in park practice: Ty Morrow Best use of the tire bonk in park practice: Nathan Williams Most unusual display of color coordination in park practice: Corey Martinez's raspberry shoes and aquamarine bike. - BT

4:09 p.m. PST: Chase Hawk just bet Garrett a beer if he jumped the 12-stair to flat. Garrett charged it, threw a barspin and completely missed the bars wrecking really hard. He was down for a minute, them started laughing ... - CY

3:49 p.m. PST: Sean Sexton: gap to nose wheelie. Nathan Williams: gap to smith to 180 out. Not pulled just yet but I'm sure he will do it by the end of the session. Sexton; opposite whip into the big bank. Ty Morrow: rail ride to no-hander. Sexton: flair gap over the brick quarter channel! So nuts!!! - BT

Garrett Reynolds

3:42 p.m. PST: Garrett Reynolds just did a wild, wild run. Smith up the big ledge to gap into the brick quarter, to downside whip on the big bank, to 180 barspin over the step-up rail. And Dakota Roche just 180d over the big rail and into the steep bank, pulling the rollback to boot. - BT

3:15 p.m. PST: Sean Sexton just got on the street course for the first time and charged the big stair set. He jumped over to flat, or as he called it, "roosting." Then he jumped the other stairs and hurt his foot a little. Van said: "Wait till go time." -CY

1:45 p.m. PST: "It's dangerous standing over there, you get sucked into watching Rally and the next thing you know, 30 minutes have gone by." - Chris Doyle

1:35 p.m. PST: Everyone's just pumping the course right now and getting distracted by the loud rally cars driving by. The park is getting filled with smoke! -CY

1:25 p.m. PST: Dhers just commented that the course is way to hectic right now and hard to ride because everyone's snaking each other to get a run in. Just about everyone who's competing is now out on the course, including Garrett Reynolds, Morgan Wade and Dennis Enarson (whom I didn't see yesterday). -CY

1:15 p.m. PST: Dhers just crashed 270-ing over the hip and Darden commented: "That ain't his steez, it's not a straight box jump." I feel a sense of competitiveness in that comment. -CY

12:40 p.m. PST: All the riders are taking practice runs and talking about the format process for competition. Here it is in a nutshell: Jam-style, five riders per group, each with a total of 15 minutes to session. Each rider takes a run in a specified order and has no more than 30 seconds on the course. If he crashes, the next rider automatically goes. Riders are judged on their best three runs (even if they are able to get more than that). -CY All the guys are talking about how fast 30 seconds, is so I timed Scotty Cranmer making one loop around the course and it took 20 seconds. Which means is that there is not a whole lot of time to do much, and it should make things pretty interesting. -CY

12:27 p.m. PST: Funny quote: "I tried to get in Mirra's rally car as his co-driver this year but he wouldn't let me." -Scotty Cranmer

12:13 p.m. PST: Check out Mat Hoffman going over the rules with everybody. -CY

Mat Hoffman laying down the law.

11:45 a.m. PST: Just getting out to Park practice this right now. Guys are just slowly starting to trickle in, probably 'cause it's the third day of practice and everyone's had some time on the course. I just glanced over my shoulder to see Mat Hoffman chatting with Chris Doyle. Guys are padding up and the weather is looking perfect as always here at the Home Depot Center. -CY

11:10 a.m. PST: Welcome to Wednesday's live BMX blog coverage from X Games 15. Today is going to be running a bit different from the previous two. I'll be in and out of the venue while I run and do some video-related content with Aaron Ross, but Cody York will be covering park and street throughout the afternoon. Not as much of a tag team effort as the past two days, but every mundane highlight will be reported on. After I get back from my travels with Aaron Ross, we'll be catching up with Big Air and Vert practice, so keep checking back on the blog for the latest from X Games 15. And in case you missed it, be sure to check out Zoom Practice Gallery from days one and two, including action shots from Ali Whitton, Brad Simms, Gary Young and more. -BT
