MNF History: 1989
ABC Sports Online

Notes from the 1989 MNF season:

  • Commissioner Pete Rozelle announced his retirement in March, pending the naming of a successor, who turned out to be current commish Paul Tagliabue. The transfer became official on Nov. 5.

  • Jerry Jones bought the Dallas Cowboys on April 18.

  • The New York Giants became the second team to open their season on MNF four seasons in a row. For the second straight year, they did so against the Washington Redskins -- the first time in the program's history that two teams began their season on Monday nights in back-to-back years.

  • Six more MNF records were set or tied.
