Virginia had plenty of chances to beat USC, but it also had one too many mistakes and nine too many penalties in the 17-14 loss to the Trojans.
The Cavaliers deserve credit for a poised effort against the Trojans and for not quitting. UVA wasn't in awe, it wasn't overwhelmed and it wasn't manhandled like two years ago in Charlottesville.
Coach Mike London put the players in a position to succeed, they just didn't capitalize on it. Virginia outgained USC in total offense, but an interception in the end zone, two missed field goals and penalties were too much to overcome.
There was nothing to be ashamed of in Virginia's effort, and it was a sign of positive things to come for the program -- especially considering the way the rest of the Coastal Division struggled. Don't count out Virginia just yet.
