2011 schedule analysis: Wake Forest

The 2011 ACC schedule was announced on Monday, so it's time to take a team-by-team look at what's on tap this fall in the ACC. We'll go in reverse alphabetical order, starting today with Wake Forest:

Nonconference opponents and 2010 records:

  • at Syracuse (8-5)

  • Gardner-Webb (4-7)

  • Notre Dame (8-5)

  • Vanderbilt (2-10)

Cross-divisional schedule:

  • Virginia Tech

  • at Duke

  • at North Carolina

Gut-check game: We'll find out which direction the Deacs are headed in Week 2, when they host Atlantic Division contender NC State.

Trap game: Oct. 22 at Duke. The Deacs have owned this series. That's about to change.

Snoozer: There will be a late-September lull that includes the Sept. 17 home game against Gardner-Webb, which is followed by a bye week.

Good luck with that: Back-to-back October games against defending division champs Florida State and Virginia Tech? Good luck.

Upset watch: Oct. 29 at North Carolina. Expectations are higher for the Tar Heels, but at this point in the season, they'll be coming off back-to-back games against Miami and Clemson.

Analysis: This schedule will make it difficult for Wake Forest to return to the postseason. The Deacs will need to go 3-1 against their nonconference opponents and beat the likes of Boston College, Maryland and Duke. The month of October could seal their fate.
