Virginia Tech punter A.J. Hughes engineers miracle punt

VA Tech punter makes a great save (0:36)

Virginia Tech long snapper Eddie D'Antuono snaps the ball over punter A.J. Hughes' head and into the end zone but Hughes recovers and kicks the ball away just before East Carolina tight end Stephen Baggett could get to it. (0:36)

It went down in the record book as a 20-yard punt, and that is really unfair to Virginia Tech punter A.J. Hughes.

On fourth-and-2 from the Hokies' 33-yard line and the field a rainy mess, long-snapper Eddie D'Antuono sent one sailing over Hughes' head into the Hokies' own end zone. Hughes raced back to recover, and instead of taking the safety, he made the gutsy call to kick it on the run. Against the odds, the lefty got the ball into ECU territory.

It's worth noting that the Pirates scored a touchdown on their ensuing drive, but that wasn't Hughes' fault.

The man can only do so much.

Meanwhile, Saturday's punt marked the second time this week the senior has showcased his athleticism. During the Hokies' practice on Thursday, a bored Hughes launched a kick over Virginia Tech's 110-foot scoreboard.

The feat earned a shoutout from Indianapolis Colts punter Pat McAfee. Hughes grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana.
