Morning take: Santonio Holmes on PUP?

Here are the most interesting stories Thursday in the AFC East:

  • New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said he's unsure if No. 1 receiver Santonio Holmes (foot) will start the regular season on the physically unable to perform list.

Morning take: Going to the PUP list would put Holmes out for at least the first six games. The Jets’ offense already is in dire straights and desperately needs Holmes back in the lineup sooner than later.

  • New England Patriots receiver Danny Amendola says it's going to be a good year for him and quarterback Tom Brady.

Morning take: Health is the biggest key for both players. Amendola has missed more games (20) than he’s played (12) the past two seasons. New England needs him to be durable in a Patriots uniform.

  • Could Buffalo Bills defensive lineman Alex Carrington have a big season?

Morning take: Carrington has shown potential off the bench, but he will need more reps in 2013. The Bills have a lot of decent players on the front seven, and defensive coordinator Mike Pettine needs to find the right combination.

  • What is quarterback Matt Moore’s role with the Miami Dolphins this season?

Morning take: Moore, like all backup quarterbacks, must stay ready. Teams often fall apart when the starting quarterback gets injured. Moore’s job is to make sure there’s not much of a drop off if Ryan Tannehill gets banged up.
