NFL Films' Greg Cosell: I'd take Zach Mettenberger over Jameis Winston

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- NFL Films executive producer Greg Cosell recently spoke with an NFL scout who brought up Zach Mettenberger and Jameis Winston for comparison.

The scout said the Tennessee Titans' sixth-round pick from last season and the projected No. 1 pick in this draft are comparable.

Cosell agreed.

In his weekly appearance on The Midday 180 on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville -- a show I help host -- Cosell said he’d take Mettenberger over Winston.

“Mettenberger and Winston are very, very similar in style of play,” Cosell said. "I’d argue Mettenberger is more advanced as an anticipatory thrower and has a little bit better arm.”

Quarterback evaluation is about assessing traits and attributes. Cosell said. The list of those includes how he does with drops and sets, how he reads defenses, his ability to throw with anticipation before a receiver is out of his break, whether he can throw people open and if he able to take a step right or left to avoid a rusher.

Running through those boxes, Cosell sees very similar quarterbacks.

We know Mettenberger’s stock dropped because of a knee injury in his final season at LSU and because of some off-field concerns.

Winston has off-field concerns, too. (I think most would say bigger concerns.)

But the big difference in the view of the Winston now and Mettenberger a year ago is that there are teams that view Winston as having the “it” factor that can lead to big plays at big moments, Cosell said.
