ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting the Chargers are shopping cornerback Antonio Cromartie to help acquire a running back.
CromartieThis is not a surprise.
There have been whispers about the team’s displeasure with Cromartie since before last season. He’s had a few minor run-ins with the team and his play on the field has been unsteady. He had a better season in 2009 than 2008 in coverage, but he is a major liability in run support. The Chargers believe 2008 first-round pick Antoine Cason is ready to take the next step.
So, if San Diego could get some value for Cromartie, I could see him being shipped out. Realistic compensation for Cromartie is probably a third-round pick.
Mortensen is reporting that a draft pick received in return for Cromartie could help the team find a running back. It is clear San Diego will find its new primary tailback through the draft, free agency or a trade. It is the team’s biggest need.
If trading a player like Cromartie helps make it happen, the Chargers need to consider it.
