Chargers looking at the next Gates?

Knowing it’s possible, the San Diego Chargers are open to trying to make a college basketball star an NFL player.

The Buffalo News reported the Chargers were one of five teams to attend the workout of Niagara University basketball star Tyrone Lewis on Monday. He was a guard in college and finished third in career scoring and first in career steals at his school. He is 5-foot-10, 172 pounds and he is very fast.

He was an outstanding high school cornerback in Pennsylvania. But he hasn’t played football in five years. Lewis will now decide between playing pro basketball in Europe or trying to latch on with an NFL team, likely as an undrafted free agent.

The Chargers know the transition can happen. Several years ago, the Chargers took a chance on Kent State star basketball player Antonio Gates. He turned into one of the premier tight ends in the league.
