Ricky Stanzi making push in Kansas City

It is only June, but an interesting race may be developing in Kansas City.

Ricky Stanzi is putting big heat on newly signed Brady Quinn to be Matt Cassel’s backup quarterback.

The Chiefs’ website reported that Stanzi took over the second-team from Quinn during the week. Stanzi was a fifth-round draft pick last year. Quinn (who played for Kansas City head coach Romeo Crennel in Cleveland) was signed this offseason to be Cassel’s backup.

The fact that Stanzi is getting second-team snaps now may or may not be significant. This is the time for tinkering. The Chiefs are probably just seeing how Stanzi does with the second team.

The real indication, of course, will come in training camp. Still, it seems like the Chiefs are comfortable in giving Stanzi a chance to earn the backup job. Quinn must respond with a strong camp.

The Denver Post reports the Broncos are making progress on a new deal for kicker Matt Prater. He was given the franchise tag and he has not been with the team this offseason.
