Here are some areas the San Diego Chargers need to focus on after a 22-14 win at Oakland on Monday night:
Recap: The banged-up Chargers went to Oakland and came away with an impressive win. The Chargers were solid on both sides of the ball and made more plays than Oakland in a win that was helped by three special-teams miscues by the home team in the third quarter.
Biggest area to fix: The Chargers need to finish drives. They had to settle for five field goals and scored just one touchdown. The Chargers were just 1-for-5 in the red zone. That is an area that must improve. Settling for field goals is not a way to make the playoffs. The Chargers left double-digit points on the field. That can’t happen.
Biggest area to build on: Overall defensive effort. The Chargers were stout on defense, an area that the team concentrated on getting better in the offseason. San Diego was awesome against the run (Oakland had 45 yards rushing on 20 carries) and limited big plays in the passing game. The Chargers rushed the passer well and dictated the game. It was a strong sign.
What to watch for: The Chargers -- who in the past under Norv Turner have struggled often early in the season -- can jump out to a 2-0 start with a win over the 0-1 Titans at home on Sunday.
