KANSAS CITY -- This is a day of milestones for San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers.
It is his 100th NFL start. Rivers' first completion of the day (on the first offensive play of the game) marked his 2,000th career completion. Also, that completion was a 14-yard pass to running back Jackie Battle. More about him in a bit.
A few plays later, Rivers -- who led the Chargers to a touchdown on their opening drive at Kansas City -- surpassed the 25,000 career yardage mark. He is the seventh fastest quarterback in history to reach that plateau.
This is all a testament to Rivers’ consistency. He is averaging 20 completions and 250 yards a game this season.
Meanwhile, in a surprise, Battle started at running back against the Chiefs, in place of Ryan Mathews. He fumbled last week in his first action back from breaking his shoulder. But Mathews was on the field for the Chargers’ second drive, and it was clear he was being punished for his fumble.
