Norv Turner is playing a mystery game with who will be his starting tailback Sunday night at New Orleans.
Will it be Ryan Mathews or Jackie Battle?
Turner isn’t saying as of Saturday morning. Last week, Battle started at Kansas City because Mathews had a crucial fumble in Week 3 against Atlanta in his season debut. Mathews, who was out for several weeks with a broken clavicle, did finish the Kansas City game strong with 61 yards on 14 carries and he had some big runs late in the game.
Everyone involved is downplaying the importance of who is the starter. I agree, but the truth is, the Chargers need Mathews to be productive as the primary back, whether he is labeled as the starter or not.
This offense will not function at a high level unless Mathews reaches his potential. Battle is a nice option, however, he is not a lead back. That is supposed to be Mathews and he must become that type of player.
