At the bye: Kansas City Chiefs

Here is a look at the Chiefs and what needs to be done after the break.

Record: 1-5.

Reason they are in their current state: This season has been a disaster. The Chiefs -- who had high playoff hopes in the summer -- have been riddled by injuries and poor play on both sides of the ball. Sans an overtime win at New Orleans, the Chiefs have not competed much. They have not led for a second this season. It is completely glum in Kansas City right now.

Best player so far: Second-year linebacker Justin Houston looks like a future superstar, but the nod goes to running back Jamaal Charles. He has looked great after coming back for a torn ACL. He had 591 yards in six games. Charles has been a workhorse and he has regained his explosion.

What needs to be done: The Chiefs have to find a consistency on offense. The defense has improved some, but the team has to find some kind of rhythm in the passing game. I’m not sure that is possible. Matt Cassel struggled before missing Sunday’s game with a concussion. His replacement, Brady Quinn, fared no better. I think Cassel will start again when he is healthy, but it is just a matter of time before his time is up as the Chiefs’ starter.

Fearless forecast: I think the Chiefs are going to finish with a top-five pick and they will begin the search for a new franchise quarterback in the offseason.
