An interesting story developed while I was traveling from San Diego on Tuesday. Matt Cassel has been cleared for non-contact work and he will spend the bye-week practices, which start Wednesday, sharing equal repetition time with his backup, Brady Quinn.

Kansas City coach Romeo Crennel said he is giving each an equal shot at being the starter. To me, that means Cassel -- who suffered a concussion Oct. 7 against the Ravens and sat out last Sunday -- has the edge. The Chiefs have seen a lot of Cassel and if they really think they’d be better off with Quinn, they’d make the move, but they're giving Cassel another chance.

I think that means the team believes Cassel will emerge over Quinn, who struggled in his start Sunday in the Chiefs' 38-10 loss at Tampa Bay.

I’m sure the Chiefs will not make anything official until next week as to who will start at home against Oakland on Oct. 28 -- but Quinn would have to clearly outshine Cassel in practice to get the job.
