Monday morning, SportsCenter offered an amazing look at the difference between the first and second halves of games for the San Diego Chargers.
San Diego is 4-5 and it has been undone by second-half slumps. It has lost four of the past five games. Three of the losses, including a loss at Tampa Bay on Sunday, were fueled by second-half stumbles.
The numbers don’t lie. The Chargers have been good in the first half and terrible in the second half. San Diego has outscored opponents by 53 points in the first half and has been outscored by 35 points in the second half.
The second-half struggles start with quarterback Philip Rivers. He has thrown for 1,322 yards in the first half and just 739 yards in the second half. He has thrown 12 touchdown passes in the first half and three in the second half.
The Chargers have committed 12 turnovers in the second half and seven in the first half.
While the numbers are stunning and unacceptable, at least the Chargers know what their problem is. There is no mystery. If they can carry over their strong first half for a full 60 minutes, they will start winning games.
