The Film Don't Lie: Chiefs

A weekly look at what the Kansas City Chiefs must fix:

The two best defensive linemen for the Chiefs are Dontari Poe and Allen Bailey. Poe played 71 of the 73 defensive snaps and Bailey 66 in Sunday’s bruising 24-20 win over the Seattle Seahawks.

How much can Poe, at 346 pounds, and Bailey, at 288, have in the tank for Thursday night’s game against the Oakland Raiders?

It’s not unusual for Poe and Bailey to play almost all of the defensive snaps in a given game. It is unusual for them to do it on a short week like the one the Chiefs are now facing.

So it’s a good idea for the Chiefs to play a couple of backups, Vance Walker and Kevin Vickerson, more against the Raiders.

Walker and Vickerson have been NFL starters in their careers, Walker for the Raiders and Vickerson for the Denver Broncos. Neither has been as effective as Poe and Bailey this season, so the Chiefs need to pick their spots.

But the Chiefs can benefit in both the short and long run by playing Walker and Vickerson more in Oakland. A rotation of fresh bodies will help in Oakland, and fewer snaps for Poe and Bailey will help preserve them for the rest of what looks like a season that will extend into January for the Chiefs.
