Cards Mailbag: Battle tight for playing time at safety

Welcome to #CardsMailbag, a weekly installment that allows you to ask me questions about the Arizona Cardinals throughout the week via Twitter@joshweinfuss. I'll answer them every weekend during the offseason. Make sure to use the hashtag #CardsMailbag.

@joshweinfuss: This is turning into the $50,000 question. In all honesty, they're not. What's going to have to happen in order for them to all get playing time is for Arizona to play a lot of nickel so all four defensive backs can get on the field. I think -- and I've written this before -- Tony Jefferson will be the odd man out. Deone Bucannon will likely play more nickel linebacker again, so he'll be on the field and then Tyrann Mathieu and Rashad Johnson will likely be the starting safeties.

@joshweinfuss: Just remember I'm not a marketing professional. So, with that being said, here's my best guess at 10 Cardinals who will be on their cups: Carson Palmer, Larry Fitzgerald, Andre Ellington, Patrick Peterson, Mathieu, Calais Campbell, Justin Bethel, Michael Floyd, Jared Vehldheer, John Brown. There are a few others who could easily be picked, but those are my top 10.

@joshweinfuss: Not yet, but it's also too early. There are still three weeks before training camp begins, which gives the Cards three more weeks of evaluating potential signings as far as injuries go.

@joshweinfuss: No. And that's not a soft "no" either. Unless he retires, I don't see a way that Drew Stanton isn't on the roster next season. Arizona saw first-hand last season how important it was to have a quality backup on the roster, regardless of how much he makes. It's basically a three-man race (Logan Thomas, Chandler Harnish and Phillip Sims) for the third position.
