Cardinals cut wide receiver shot before training camp

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Damond Powell, the Arizona Cardinals' undrafted wide receiver who was shot last summer a week before his rookie training camp began, was released Thursday.

He was shot in the face and neck on July 24, while he reportedly sat in a car in front of his home in Toledo, Ohio. One bullet struck Powell's face and another was lodged between his C1 and C2 vertebrae.

Powell, who was signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Iowa, was placed on the non-football injury list on July 28. He did not count against the 90-man roster.
