Dennis Pitta ranks No. 19 on Ravens' 2015 player rankings

ESPN.com polled 21 Baltimore media members for their top 20 players on the 2015 Baltimore Ravens roster. The countdown will run through the end of the month, just before the start of training camp.

Let's continue the countdown ...

Position: Tight end

Total points: 62. First-place votes: None.

Highest ranking: No. 4. Lowest ranking: Not ranked.

2015 salary-cap figure ranking: Sixth ($6.2 million)

2014 ranking: No. 9

Biggest question: Will Pitta ever play again?

Storyline: Pitta has yet to be cleared to practice after undergoing surgeries on his dislocated right hip the last two seasons. There's a good chance that he'll begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list, but the Ravens haven't written him off this year. The return of Pitta would be an emotional lift to the team and a big boost to the Ravens' passing game. Pitta became Joe Flacco's security blanket in 2012 and 2013.

Where Pitta should be ranked: This is way too low for Pitta, although it's understandable why he is toward the bottom of the list. The uncertainty about Pitta's playing future caused the biggest disparity of any Ravens player. Most media members (14 of the 21) didn't rank Pitta because he might never catch another pass in a regular-season game. Those who did put him among the top 12 players on the team. If Pitta can play and reach the level he did before, he's clearly one of the best 10 players on the team.

File this away: Flacco targeted Pitta on 26.4 percent of the routes he ran in 2012 and 2013. That ranked third among tight ends over that span, behind Rob Gronkowski (29.2 percent) and Jimmy Graham (28.7 percent).

What the Ravens are saying about Pitta: "We want to make sure he's going to be totally healthy, totally safe as much is as reasonable in football to make sure that hip is sound and everything before our doctors would ever clear him. In the end, it will be up to the doctors and Dennis to determine that." -- coach John Harbaugh
