Ravens playing it safe with injured Elvis Dumervil

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- The Baltimore Ravens are taking a cautious approach with pass rusher Elvis Dumervil's tendinitis in his Achilles.

Dumervil was injured on the first day of training camp and has sat out the last three days of practice. He set the franchise record with 17 sacks last season.

"He's got a tendinitis issue that we're not going to mess with," coach John Harbaugh said. "So he'll be fine soon. It won't be until he's 100 percent until we bring him back to practice."

With Dumervil out, Courtney Upshaw has received increased reps as an edge rusher. Upshaw has three sacks in his three seasons.

Harbaugh estimated that Dumervil shouldn't miss more than a week, but he acknowledged there is no firm timetable.

"I don't think it'll be long," Harbaugh said.

Like Dumervil, wide receiver Breshad Perriman hasn't practiced since getting injured on the first day of camp. Perriman, a rookie first-round pick, has a sprained and bruised tendon in his knee, Harbaugh said.

"It shouldn't be too long," Harbaugh said. "It's just until he can start moving around. He's going through the walkthroughs."

Two cornerbacks, Rashaan Melvin and Tray Walker, have each tweaked their hamstrings over the last two days of practice.

"Whenever a guy gets a hamstring right now, we're pretty much getting him out of there," Harbaugh said. "We don't want them to go."
