Big 12 recruiting scorecard

After a week off due to Big 12 media days, we've got some catching to do in this week's scorecard. Here's how the conference's recruiting classes are coming together as we close in on fall camp.

The latest: The Bears are off to a blazing start to 2017 and now have seven on board for next year's class, including recent pledges LB Baron Browning (No. 39 in the ESPN Junior 300), WR Jhamon Ausbon (133) and TE Kedrick James (139). Their latest pledge came from DB Jalen Pitre, who plays with BU commit Hezekiah Jones at Stafford High.

The latest: If you're looking for the next Cyclones pledge, keep an eye on OT Grant Hermanns. The 6-foot-6 lineman out of New Mexico is hoping to make a decision before his senior season begins and took a visit to Ames last month. Hermanns also visited Texas Tech and Kansas this summer.

The latest: The Jayhawks are doing a nice job so far on the junior college recruiting trail and recently added LB Kurtis Taufa and DT Manaia Perese out of Snow College in Utah. Taufa flipped from Utah, where he'd been committed since February. KU earned a pledge from a third Snow player, OT Joe Malanga, back in May.

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: The Wildcats dipped into Central Texas and plucked a promising big man last week in OG Zach Shackleford. The three-star lineman from Belton, Texas, did hold 14 other offers, but K-State was his first and their patience paid off. Shackleford is expected to enroll early in January.

ESPN 300 commits: 1

The latest: The Sooners still are considered the frontrunner for Devwah Whaley, the nation's top uncommitted RB, and they got another chance to add to their lead when he took an official visit on Friday, prompting multiple tweets from OU coaches. Whaley recently camped at Georgia too and still has those two programs in his top five along with Texas, Texas A&M and Arkansas.

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: Mike Gundy's staff got a nice start to its 2017 class with a pledge from ILB Levi Draper out of Collinsville, Oklahoma. The big-time linebacker has an impressive list of offers and debuted at No. 141 in the ESPN Junior 300, making him the No. 1 recruit in the state of Oklahoma for next year.

Total commits: 15

ESPN 300 commits: 5

The latest: The Horned Frogs discovered a breakout star at their recent Friday Night Lights camp in DB Vernon Scott, who earned an offer soon after and elected to commit on Saturday. Scott had offers from Air Force, Eastern Michigan, Kansas, New Mexico and Texas State but proved he's a Power 5-caliber take with his camp performance.

Total commits: 8

ESPN 300 commits: 2

The latest: The Longhorns' future in the passing game continues to look promising. Texas beat out Texas A&M and USC for ESPN 300 WR Tren'Davian Dickson earlier this month, then beat Florida for New Orleans TE Peyton Aucoin, who pledged on his way home from a visit over the weekend. The Horns still are chasing two ESPN 300 receivers, Devin Duvernay and LSU commit Dee Anderson, to add to that arsenal.

Total commits: 21

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: Texas Tech continues to beef up its defensive line, adding Austin area DE Austin Deshay and Arkansas DT Nick McCann, who had offers from Baylor and SMU. Deshay hails from Pflugerville Hendrickson, the same program that sent Samaje Perine, Daje Johnson and several others to the Big 12. He turned down offers from Kansas and Kansas State.

Total commits: 16

The latest: Soon after earning his offer, Cincinnati OT Nate Niehaus gave his verbal commitment to WVU this weekend. He could be a tackle or a tight end at the next level and picked up offers from Louisville and Illinois over the summer. Several Big Ten programs were starting to show interest, so this was a timely take for Dana Holgorsen's staff.
