Big 12 QB battles no closer to wrapping up

So it's Aug. 18. Isn't it about time for some of these Big 12 quarterback battles to get resolved?

Here's a quick rundown of where we stand with the season just a few weeks away:

Kansas Jayhawks: Montell Cozart probably should've locked this job down sooner. As the only experienced and healthy quarterback on Kansas' roster, Cozart had a serious edge over true freshmen Ryan Willis and Carter Stanley. Coach David Beaty told the Lawrence Journal-World this weekend that the battle "is gonna go a little longer," which might indicate those rookies are starting to figure it out.

Kansas State Wildcats: Here comes Jesse Ertz. According to the Kellis Robinett of the Kansas City Star, Ertz looked like the man in the lead during the Wildcats' open scrimmage over the weekend. He took the No. 1 reps with Alex Delton and Joe Hubener still in hot pursuit. Sounds like junior college transfer Jonathan Banks is falling behind, which would make sense considering how little time he's been in the program.

Oklahoma Sooners: Give credit where it's due. Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas are absolutely making this a battle. Guerin Emig of the Tulsa World reports the reps remain equal among those two and Baker Mayfield and there's still no timeline for a final decision. Based on his teammates' comments, Thomas appears to be making a push just in time.

Texas Longhorns: Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express News offered a creative take on the Longhorns' plan at quarterback over the weekend. While co-OC Shawn Watson claims the battle isn't over and Jerrod Heard is starting to get reps with the No. 1 offense, the best-case scenario for Texas' predicament would be Tyrone Swoopes earning the start at Notre Dame and being given a chance to pull off a confidence-boosting upset. No timetable at Texas, either.

Texas Tech Red Raiders: Still not much word coming out of Lubbock about Kliff Kingsbury's plan for choosing between Patrick Mahomes and Davis Webb. The head coach said in July he planned to name his starter "fairly early" in fall practice to help foster chemistry within the offense. So of these five competitions, it might still be safe to bet that Tech's gets decided first.
